Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Yes. This.

Agreed - that is bollocks.

Shirt if you don't mind all black - could wear over a cami with some or all buttons undone.

That's nice too. Decades ago I had a shorter black broiderie jacket I loved.

Nice bit of ageism there. Not that it's the only example.

As for the question...

Aargh I really really didn’t mean to be ageist!
i was just giggling at the care home uniform part as I work in one locally and it’s almost identical to my shirt there. So it made me chuckle. That’s all! sorry if I caused offence, trily
didn’t mean to. Been a long week and it’s the first thing to have made me laugh which is impressive (even if it is just over my work uniform lookalike🤦‍♀️)

M&S have upped their game recently too so have a look on their website.

Personally I’d go out and buy myself a new dress!

This thread needs a sticky on top: NO polyester.
I think that's like asking for no rain in the UK.

mainsfed · 22/04/2023 23:12

It’s 100% cotton

Nogg · 22/04/2023 23:17

I would wear the second one but jazz it up with jewellery , nice hair, makeup and small high heels.
some peoples alternative suggestions are worse in my eyes.

it really depends how you wear it and what suits your body shape.

Also no cardigan

Bringmecaffeine · 22/04/2023 23:30

Op has anyone said blazer yet instead of a cardi? X

Nogg · 22/04/2023 23:35

the Model is looking pretty fed up she
has to wear a care home uniform

Sheisperfect · 22/04/2023 23:40

It's a no to all of them from me OP.

How about some high waisted wide leg trousers (very good for hiding a belly)? With a plain cowl neck or v neck vest and bright blazer, (not the work type, the evening meal type, usually a thinner and more fkexible material) accessorise with a nice necklace and either a cross body bag or clutch? You could then wear either flats (like a nice pointy type) or low heels. It's a timeless outfit that suits most ages and all items can be worn individually dressed up or down. Can send you some inspo pics if you want. Please don't wear those floral blue/purple numbers, they are hideous

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 23/04/2023 00:18

@OldGrannyish honestly if you actually have the two tops you have originally linked to, I would wear top number two with your jeans . Wasn't keen at first but having seen some of the alternative suggestions I think your choice of clothing is as valid as any.

Enjoy your evening out Smile

I'm coming round to that as well.

Enjoy your party.

Indecisive20 · 23/04/2023 00:32

This dress is great for pear shapes - the buttons go right down so you can show as much or as little leg as you like and the belt will show your small waist. I have it in 2 colours and love it! Also they do next day delivery

It's polyester. The OP said no polyester.

Neither, sorry! This has similar vibes but a lot more up to date https://www.next.co.uk/style/st346660/d25226#d25226

Sorry but that is just hideous 😂

tobee · 23/04/2023 02:03

It's got a bit of a farmer vibe!

Can't be doing with pussy bows coz not just Thatcher but Liz Truss too.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 23/04/2023 07:37

Ruthietuthie · 22/04/2023 21:23

@GonnaGetGoingReturns, you might think you are right, but put pieces of fabric together - hold a jewel colored fabric against black, then compare again against a toning color, and notice how the black deadens the color, and cheapens it. While there might be occasional elegant person who pulls this off (your model aunt, for example) for most women, black trousers are a "I have given up but have to find something to put on my lower half" option. They don't improve the brightly colored top one little bit.
You say "it really isn't the same for every person" but, actually, this is basic color theory, as if you were an artist mixing paint. Whether a person suits a jewel color, or suits black, will depend on their complexion of course (so your aunt sounds like a Winter, hence why she could carry off the jewel tones) whereas others need softer, more muted or more dilute shapes.
I'm not sure it is nice to be quite so dismissive when people are REALLY trying to help (and have been doing for 13 pages, without much success).

I don’t think I’m right I know I’m right! (Joking). For what it is worth I’ve had my colours done years ago and don’t really believe in them, and find the idea a bit rigid though I do think certain colours and styles do suit some people. The colour matching industry is mostly to sell more clothes. I wear colours to brighten my mood and love patterns (but prefer florals). Oh and my aunt is a winter and still stunning (dammit!). She’s one of those women who as a model in their model card one of her best photos is a sporty white casual top (which seems at odds with winters and what style they should wear) but then again as a model she could (or should) have been able to make a sack look good!

At least one other poster @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie agreed with me about black and colours though her style is different to mine (but awesome!).
