Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Someone else has suggested this top and I agree. It’s from Next. Teamed with jeans and your DMs x

But I also think you should be brave and go for a midi dress, with DMs. Like these

I think your body shop would suit and dress with your docs and a blazer.

if you wear jeans I’d go for a cami too or vest too underneath a blazer, there’s loads in new look, M&S, river island and Zara, m&s have some nice flat and healed shoes in which would work with jeans and a blazer

ffsgiveitarest · 22/04/2023 21:07

body shape not body shop! 🤣🤣

ffsgiveitarest · 22/04/2023 21:08

So many typos I give up 🤦🏼‍♀️

What about something like this?

@Rainraingoaway21, you could wear your jewel colored tops with dark denim. For a more formal look, trousers or skirt in the same color or same color family but a different depth/tone would be lovely. Or color with color.
One of the posters above posted a green Max Mara blouse. Note how it is shown with trousers of the same color. With black trousers the color would look far cheaper and flat. And NEVER black with a color. Only black, white, silver or grey (and possibly navy - black and navy can look expensive if appropriately done) with black.

I’m actually laughing at some of the style advice given here as it’s really not the same for every person, can’t think of the correct words!

I’ve seen women look absolutely stunning in a coloured silk or otherwise shirt or top with blacks trousers/jeans - looked expensive, with heels etc. so that blows this advice straight out of the water. My aunt who’s an ex successful model wore/wears this - porcelain skin, dark hair, blue eyes. Sadly me, who’s blonde, blue eyes, curvyish and 5ft5 couldn’t carry it off!

What about something like this?

These are very nice and could be worn with the dreaded (only joking!) fitted blazer.

Beeswood · 22/04/2023 21:19

My favourite is the green top you chose yourself.

Unsure33 · 22/04/2023 21:20

M&S have some nice brodarie anglais shirts including a black one . So black jeans cream vest top and black shirt , lots of jewellery .

Ruthietuthie · 22/04/2023 21:23

@GonnaGetGoingReturns, you might think you are right, but put pieces of fabric together - hold a jewel colored fabric against black, then compare again against a toning color, and notice how the black deadens the color, and cheapens it. While there might be occasional elegant person who pulls this off (your model aunt, for example) for most women, black trousers are a "I have given up but have to find something to put on my lower half" option. They don't improve the brightly colored top one little bit.
You say "it really isn't the same for every person" but, actually, this is basic color theory, as if you were an artist mixing paint. Whether a person suits a jewel color, or suits black, will depend on their complexion of course (so your aunt sounds like a Winter, hence why she could carry off the jewel tones) whereas others need softer, more muted or more dilute shapes.
I'm not sure it is nice to be quite so dismissive when people are REALLY trying to help (and have been doing for 13 pages, without much success).

Willowtre1 · 22/04/2023 21:25

Is this a wind up OP?! 😂 really truly, the first two options are awful and the later ones all exactly in the same style!!
You have black jeans. I would choose a neutral colour like cream, ecru, khaki, or metallic, animal print, something black even but a different texture? You could even go for a blouse if you are keen on that style, just a nice shape one! So many to choose from, everywhere! 😂

Ruthietuthie · 22/04/2023 21:25

That said, the blue top @GonnaGetGoingReturns recommends is quite nice. Would you feel comfortable in that?

CreamTeaThievery · 22/04/2023 21:27

I like this with the black jeans and a statement necklace.

Lovelyring · 22/04/2023 21:34

I really like the butterfly one. I'd wear it and I'm in my 40s, although with light blue jeans as it looks a bit dark to go with black.

I don't like the other one, there's something unflattering about the length.

inappropriateraspberry · 22/04/2023 21:38

How about something with a bit of sparkle? They also do it in white which may look nice with black jeans. Definitely something you could wear again, celebratory without being OTT.

Omg. I had no idea about influencing. I had noticed Meghan continuing to wear neutral colours… including during the interview. I was most perplexed.

inappropriateraspberry · 22/04/2023 21:40

Or just a classic white t shirt and some good jewellery would be fine.

yetimum1 · 22/04/2023 21:40

My go to is always jeans(black or denim, not fussed!) or a pair of leather look trousers with an oversized/flowy white shirt and leather jacket. Either with a pair of chunky trainers or my DM boots. Casual but looks like you’ve made a bit of effort. Can be dressed up with a necklace and undoing too 2/3 buttons if you wish and a nice black bag. Have your hair and makeup done if you like and you’ll look effortlessly put together and lovely for any occasion 😊 I always find jeans/leather look leggings and a shirt is my go to for any event and I feel stylish and comfortable!

Wear what you’re comfortable in and remember you’re there to celebrate your friends birthday! Have a great time and don’t worry too much about what you’re wearing xx
