Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Oh and I love the green top, lovely colour and drape if you've the figure and posture to wear it.

@Rainraingoaway21, you could wear your jewel colored tops with dark denim. For a more formal look, trousers or skirt in the same color or same color family but a different depth/tone would be lovely. Or color with color.
One of the posters above posted a green Max Mara blouse. Note how it is shown with trousers of the same color. With black trousers the color would look far cheaper and flat. And NEVER black with a color. Only black, white, silver or grey (and possibly navy - black and navy can look expensive if appropriately done) with black.

Trust me you are not fat at a size 8/10.If you want to cover lumps and bumps wear something floaty. I am mid 60s and would wear this type of thing to work. Try something like these

I have tried to suggest things within you comfort zone all of them would be fine with your black jeans.

Actually OP I have changed my mind. You wear one of your original tops and have a great time. I believe the most important thing to you is not to be pass remarkable in any way and therefore one of those tops is fine for that, or indeed a new top but don't be wasting a fortune on some of those gawdawful Maggie Thatcher pussy bow tops .

I mostly hate what has been posted on this thread, and the one thing I liked someone screamed Frumpy or whatever.

I wear colours with black trousers all the time, wasn't aware of some unwritten style rule forbidding this.

That Lilly Silk top is perfectly classic, but am sure other posters will find it boring. I'd wear it though, jazzed up with jewellery.

I think sequins are out as I don't find any which aren't on a polyester shirt.

I can get to H&M on Monday and an esprit on Tuesday although last time I went there it was abysmal and only tiny sizes. Else I have to order online. Can't get to a personal shopper thing as I've the DC to be home for.

Actually, OP, your 2nd top is growing on me. And at least it's cotton.
Lots of my arty friends would wear tops like that, and I would not give them a second glance. Definitely would not consider it frumpy.

One of my friends- about 60- has got so sick of dressing that she has a uniform. She wears black knits in winter and white tshirts in summer with black or cream trousers. Lots of colourful scarves, necklaces and unusual earrings. She always looks great. And spends no time thinking about it.

There's a nice silky top at mint velvet which would look good with jeans. Not sure how to do links but it comes in a khaki and an oyster colour

The first one is the better of the two, but is more office wear. The second one is nice enough but I wouldn't wear that sort of sleeve as it wouldn't suit me.

The top @FacebookFun posted is lovely. And silk, so not sweaty. What's wrong with that one?
