Which top?

Friend's 50th birthday. DH doesn't like one because it's too grannyish and MIL says that one is better (but then, she is a granny!)
Which is better? I prefer one over the other, but my fashion sense is questionable

Black jeans and probably a dark blue (or black?) cardigan with it

Also different women suit different prints and styles. I look awful in Cos and Arket mostly but my SIL really suits their clothes. I prefer &otherstories and similar brands which SIL doesn’t suit. I also tend to suit florals whereas she prefers plain colours and polka dots.

Out of interest - those saying no to bright top with black jeans, what can you wear a bright coloured top with? I have some lovely jewel coloured tops as those colours suit me, but have no idea what to wear on my bottom half?

I would start my own thread on this but thought it may enlighten the OP too!

Dark blue, charcoal or indigo jeans? That's what I do.

Pink Wrap Cotton Jersey Top | Oliver Bonas

What about this one, it would look lovely with black jeans and a black jacket.

I like this. Not sure if I’d wear it but it’s simple and I’ve loved a lot of Oliver Bonas clothes recently. They weren’t always great!

anotherscroller · 22/04/2023 19:27

Neither!!! Can we find you something else?

CindersAgain · 22/04/2023 19:27

I think the bright colour thing is one of those that if we’re being really perfectionist though. It’s going to rule out a load of options that would look good.

With black and blue jeans but also various black skirts I wear a vintage sequin black with gold short sleeved top or a light baby pink and silver vintage shirt sleeved sequin top (both 80s I think) or a long sleeved rainbow 🌈 sequin top I got at Next last year and got compliments on. The sequin ones are lovely (a bit big now properly since I lost weight!).

schoolsoutforever · 22/04/2023 19:31

Honestly, I was expecting you to say you were much older when I saw the tops. I’m 47 but would think both were quite frumpy for a party/outing but nice for work or similar. If you are an 8-10 you are obviously quite slim so worth making the most of that. What about something a bit more partyish?:
E.g https://johnlewis.scene7.com/is/image/JohnLewis/006413686alt1?$rsp-pdp-port-640$ A bit expensive but there will be similar bargains out there.

OldGrannyish · 22/04/2023 19:31

@awaynboilyurheid that looks like an old person's top to me, the kind of thing my mum would wear!

@StNinian i used to have a shirt like that at uni!

Some of these suggestions are awful. And some of you are being so unkind to the OP! Plus some people saying “oh god you can’t possibly wear bright colours with black” and then loads of links with bright coloured tops.

Absolutely ! I'm not surprised the poor OP is confused. And this thread really shows how personal individual taste is .

FWIW I liked the Hush leopard skin top linked by @VooVooV .

Upwiththelark76 · 22/04/2023 19:38

For instant put togetherness wear a sequin top blazer and jeans .

LtJudyHopps · 22/04/2023 19:42

I know you said no synthetics but just for one evening…

In The Style have some nice blouses & shirts that are loose on the stomach but also a decent length. I also would wear a jacket going but nothing inside with these

@OldGrannyish How about something totally different? Maybe not this colour, but something like this might be good, maybe wear with a v neck black cotton T-shirt and your black heels? The double breasted blazer would hide your tummy if you’re conscious and the flared trousers would look great if you’re taller?

Could also be worn with black jeans!

Hayliebells · 22/04/2023 19:48

What about this top, the model is even wearing it with black jeans? It would suit your size and hide a bit of a belly (although at size 8-10 surely that less of an issue than you think). I think what you've posted so far is good for work (at least some of them are good for work), but not for an evening out.

GeriKellmansUpdo · 22/04/2023 19:51

That is lovely @Hayliebells. Completely my style and colour. Why can't more people make simple clothes?

KillerSandy · 22/04/2023 19:52

BramblyHedgeMouse · 22/04/2023 19:15

I like these tops, they should be flattering for any figure and would look good under a jacket. I like that they’re a simple shape and smart, as someone who doesn’t dress up very often either I wouldn’t feel like I’m wearing fancy dress iyswim.

Oh god they are awful as well.

Hayliebells · 22/04/2023 19:53

I agree @GeriKellmansUpdo , simple is always best! I love Baukjen. The bamboo fabric drapes really nicely.

AnxiousOne1 · 22/04/2023 19:57

Have you thought about booking a personal styling appointment Personal Styling Service (johnlewis.com)

I've used it before and the lady was great at working out what would suit me for the occasion, within my budget. It's probably only as good as the stylist you see, but it's free so nothing to lose.

quantumbutterfly · 22/04/2023 20:01

What's the venue?
What is your colouring like? What colours do you feel good in?
Do you like to fade into the background or be centre of attention?
How would you describe your style?
The shape of the second top looks good to me but maybe a different colour/print
and a bit of jewellery that you like.
