You know the wealthy classy look of understated expensive non branded clothes?

The ladies of Chelsea didn’t get the message. Just spent the day round Kensington and Chelsea, lots of ladies of all ages out and about. I assume they were relatively local as seemed to be meeting with friends in groups. Beautifully dressed, there were trainers galore but very few plain white ones. Still some vegas but plenty of golden goose and Gucci. One women in some wonderful shocking pink Gucci shoes and lots of general Gucci footwear, Women were wearing expensive beautiful casual outfits in shades of beige and cream. Cream cropped wide jeans. ,cream cotton jumpers. White T-shirts and one beautiful cream vashem ere wrap. But the mumsnet message that handbag branding needs to be discreet seems to have passed the ladies of Chelsea by. I would say that 90% of bags were Dior, YSL and Chanel worn by anyone from age about 18 -80 years old. Accessorised with a doodle, poodle or shihtzu of some form. Not a lab or working dog to be seen. So much for subtle and understated, May be true but not when it comes to bag or shoes

It makes perfect sense to me @NatashaDancing It’s such a shame you can’t understand it.

It's such a shame that you can't see that the 2 statements made have no connection to each other.

But don't worry I understand the point you and the other poster are trying to make in your mutual back slapping this morning.

user146539089 · 11/04/2023 12:09

They really do though @NatashaDancing, just not in your head. No need either to drag another poster into this who’s done nothing wrong. That’s unnecessary. Come at me by all means but mentioning them is just grim on your part.

misscockerspaniel · 11/04/2023 12:10

A few years ago, I worked with a woman whose father was a well known billionaire - she ended up marrying a well known billionaire. She was surprisingly down to earth but what I remember about her, aside from her chain smoking, is that her shoes had holes in them.

All you are doing by that statement is showing that you are a crashing snob- but to be fair, you're not the only one today.

Your 2 statements make no logical sense. They are a poor attempt at virtue signalling.

What's that supposed to prove? Beyond she is remarkably tight with money.

Neverhappyalwayshopeful · 11/04/2023 12:30

@NatashaDancing I wasn't trying to be snobby or humble brag. I'm sorry it came across that way. My point was to say that 'wealth' has become a fashion trend rather than an aspiration. My other point was that 'subtle' brands like loro piana which was given as an example are no longer subtle as they've become part of a trend and are now seen in places you wouldn't have previously. They're simple but not subtle.

Essentially my final point was wear what you like. Wear what you can afford. Wear what suits your lifestyle. I often wear supermarket and I wear branded too.

user146539089 · 11/04/2023 12:42

I am the opposite of a crashing snob @NatashaDancing but clearly you know better even through you’ve actually never met me 😂As for virtue signalling, I’m happy to be accused of that if it means I’m someone who cares about social issues rather than how much someone’s shoes cost.

Really? I mean trumpeting “access to a world famous, ultra exclusive address which I’ve earned the right to be in through hard work and talent” doesn’t sound like “exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth” aka snobbery at all.

user146539089 · 11/04/2023 13:05

on the contrary @Mirabai It was self-deprecating. A comment on the irony of being let into such a place when I’m so low born. I wouldn’t expect people who talk about £2k outfits to grasp that for one moment though 😂

i truly wish people would start thinking about class in terms of people's actions and behaviours rather than whether their 8k handbag was covered in designer branding or not

some truly silly things said in MN - I was advised once that the only tasteful of acceptable bedding was plain pure white (obviously stupidly expensive as well)

Absolutely! Behaviour is a much better sign of class than clothes, especially these days. I’d much rather be a doctor than an influencer, despite the pay disparity. I was previously quite enamoured with Chanel handbags, but now seeing the sorts of riff raff that wear them, I no longer want one.

Perhaps the tone is skewed on internet forums but you have zero self awareness.

Perhaps you meant it to be self-deprecating, it didn’t come across that way.

Not personally been involved in discussion of 2k outfits.

Really @NatashaDancing? I have zero self-awareness? You can glean that from one single comment? Do you think that it fair or kind?

If you think your comments have been "self deprecating" then , yes you have zero self-awareness of how you're coming across.

user146539089 · 11/04/2023 14:01

Your confidence is quite something @NatashaDancing It’s impressive.

Easterbunnywashere · 11/04/2023 14:06

I was always brought up to think that displaying labels was common and gold on clothing was blingy. It reminds me of the fashions in south of France after the end of the cold war. All the clothes in the shops were bright and blingy - apparently for all the Russians who wanted to make an obvious show of their newly acquired wealth. No self-respecting European was interested.

If you're as modest, self deprecating as you seem to think, you might wonder why at least 2 posters think otherwise.

user146539089 · 11/04/2023 14:23

I’ve not made one single personal comment anyone on this thread @NatashaDancing You on the other hand interrupted a conversation I was having with another poster to call me a snob, a virtue signaller, someone with zero self-awareness and false modesty as well as other things. People talk about social media being toxic and this is what they mean. What do you want from this exchange? For me to feel as bad as I possibly can about myself? That’s how it feels. Something I have said has triggered something in you which wants to make me, a complete stranger feel really low about themselves. What do you gain from this? Seriously? Does this make you feel good about yourself?

KillerSandy · 12/04/2023 20:17

The old "wearing a handbag" 😂😂😂

Bluebellwood129 · 13/04/2023 09:53

the middle class immerses itself in the codes and images of luxury without ever truly attaining it

So, so true.

People who live in Chelsea are mostly European which is why it’s nicknamed ’Chelski’. They have a much more label conscious and glossier aesthetic than white British poshos. They might even sound English because they went to public schools here, but they’re from cultures where looking low maintenance is considered déclassé.
