You know the wealthy classy look of understated expensive non branded clothes?

The ladies of Chelsea didn’t get the message. Just spent the day round Kensington and Chelsea, lots of ladies of all ages out and about. I assume they were relatively local as seemed to be meeting with friends in groups. Beautifully dressed, there were trainers galore but very few plain white ones. Still some vegas but plenty of golden goose and Gucci. One women in some wonderful shocking pink Gucci shoes and lots of general Gucci footwear, Women were wearing expensive beautiful casual outfits in shades of beige and cream. Cream cropped wide jeans. ,cream cotton jumpers. White T-shirts and one beautiful cream vashem ere wrap. But the mumsnet message that handbag branding needs to be discreet seems to have passed the ladies of Chelsea by. I would say that 90% of bags were Dior, YSL and Chanel worn by anyone from age about 18 -80 years old. Accessorised with a doodle, poodle or shihtzu of some form. Not a lab or working dog to be seen. So much for subtle and understated, May be true but not when it comes to bag or shoes

I feel like this thread is by a bunch of aliens studying human culture. It's bonkers.

A bunch of unaccountably furious aliens at that.

ProstituteHair · 10/04/2023 20:19

And the repeated deletions make it look as though I am saying something offensive.

I'm bloody not!!

What!!

Honestly.

I just thanked Hebe and asked the poster who keeps reporting me if she was listening.

Bonkers.

Seriously.

I imagine this entirely benign comment will get deleted too...

This is not ok, it is making me look as though I keep saying offensive things.

I'm not.

One poster seems to be reporting every comment I make. How is that ok?

They were foreign or nouveau riche with no class.

I’ve never heard of Loro Piana so just had a look. Nearly 2k for a pair of trousers you can see your knickers through. No thanks.

Loro piana is no longer understated but it's still eye watering my expensive. Everybody seems to be wearing yacht shoes for walking around shopping centres 🫣 the current trend is 'quiet luxury' which seems to be a case of dressing the way you think old rich people dress.

I have no idea @Neverhappyalwayshopeful I like clothes but wouldn’t to give them this amount of headspace. This weekend I’ll be in London with access to a world famous, ultra exclusive address which I’ve earned the right to be in through hard work and talent. I won’t be wearing £2k trousers and I doubt anyone will care, thankfully.

sleeplessinsouthhampton · 11/04/2023 09:37

i truly wish people would start thinking about class in terms of people's actions and behaviours rather than whether their 8k handbag was covered in designer branding or not

some truly silly things said in MN - I was advised once that the only tasteful of acceptable bedding was plain pure white (obviously stupidly expensive as well)

👏🏽 👏🏽 I do wish more people would stop worrying about how they appear and worry more about who they are e.g being kind, respectful, honest etc etc. I do buy expensive/designer bags and shoes etc but only what suits my lifestyle e.g it would be pointless spending £2k on a jumper atm as I'm being puked on at least once a day! Wear what makes you happy and appropriate for the setting. e.g not a bikini to church or pyjamas to the office.

They’ll mostly be out of towners, a new Prada cafe has opened in Harvey Nicks or Harrods I believe.

Of course you have to drop in the “much of my youth spent in Chelsea” does this mean you’re a Sloane (whom I’ve mostly found to be insufferably snobbish whether there or in other locations) or you visited there?!

I also spent much of my youth in Chelsea (being dragged up and down by my mum) but the one shop I really miss there is the toy shop Tiger Tiger!

user146539089 · 11/04/2023 10:50

Absolutely @Neverhappyalwayshopeful I’m mindful that junior doctors are striking today as they want more than £14ph. These women would be very grateful for junior doctors if they ever slipped in their £££ yacht shoes. Some people value the wrong things .

Did I say anything about being in Harvey Nicks or Harrods? Erm, no, I didn't.

Agreed. I don't agree with being shamed for being well off whether it's inherited wealth, earned wealth or wealth born from luck! If you've got it spend it on what you like. What I do think is that as a society people have somehow become fixated on appearing wealthy even if they're not. It's become a fashion trend rather than an aspiration to do well, work hard and become exactly that.

The nhs strike is something I feel strongly about. I have a number of close family members in the medical field and £14ph is generous given current actual pay! They're always going in on days off to cover and bridging gaps between shifts to ensure safe handovers or completing critical care. When you're on a fixed salary those extra hours eat in to your hourly rate. Compared to the generation of doctors before that, the juniors nowadays are expected to take on much more responsibility, mostly learn on the job and work independently without supervision from much earlier on. The support from nurses etc is also less as they too are having to work beyond their capabilities. Sorry for derailing this thread but I didn't want to read your comment and run.
