You know the wealthy classy look of understated expensive non branded clothes?

The ladies of Chelsea didn’t get the message. Just spent the day round Kensington and Chelsea, lots of ladies of all ages out and about. I assume they were relatively local as seemed to be meeting with friends in groups. Beautifully dressed, there were trainers galore but very few plain white ones. Still some vegas but plenty of golden goose and Gucci. One women in some wonderful shocking pink Gucci shoes and lots of general Gucci footwear, Women were wearing expensive beautiful casual outfits in shades of beige and cream. Cream cropped wide jeans. ,cream cotton jumpers. White T-shirts and one beautiful cream vashem ere wrap. But the mumsnet message that handbag branding needs to be discreet seems to have passed the ladies of Chelsea by. I would say that 90% of bags were Dior, YSL and Chanel worn by anyone from age about 18 -80 years old. Accessorised with a doodle, poodle or shihtzu of some form. Not a lab or working dog to be seen. So much for subtle and understated, May be true but not when it comes to bag or shoes

It's a bit like all rich people drive bangers. I used to work on Bond St, plenty of people driving those expensive cars & flashy labels are rich.

According to MN , classy, old money’ wear torn anoraks , twenty year old wellington boots and drive old bangers whole ‘new money’ wear CD, LV, Gucci etc

All this is mostly a load of nonsense and is just an example of snobbery rooted in class with a bit of envy thrown in.

Limetart · 10/04/2023 07:39

I haven’t been to London for a few years.

I live in rural France where the Brits mostly look like sacks of potatoes and the French mostly look chic as expected. The use of scarves by the french, both men and women, alway adds to their generally understated appearance.
My limited knowledge of designer fashion means I don’t know what labels are worn.
I do now have a collection of really glamorous scarves.

Yep, why on earth is old money better? far more likely to have nefarious history than a footballer who likes head to toe Gucci!

You should all have a fucking word with yourselves.

Says the person with the utterly offensive user name.

This thread is so funny 😅

IglesiasPiggl · 10/04/2023 08:09

It's interesting how things change isn't it? I generally think of places like Chelsea as being relatively slow moving in terms of fashion, precisely because of the prevalence of the "expensive classic" look you describe OP. Maybe they're following the old adage of the classic look, of updating via accessories?

Much better to have an offensive username than offensive opinions.

You silly sausage.

Is this thread a parody? It feels like it

FancyFanny · 10/04/2023 08:52

I really like those Goose trainers- they look already worn in and cool

Floisme · 10/04/2023 08:54

I have no idea what this thread is about or what the op's intentions are but I am utterly shocked to hear that there are people in London who dress up.

I think you are confused about the purpose of working dogs, I don’t think there are many game birds that need retrieving in Chelsea!

... and all the sheep have been gathered up and herded off (or should that be flocked off?) to Smithfield Meat market.

jaqueandjill · 10/04/2023 09:40

This thread is ridiculous 🤣
Makes me glad to live in the SW...England that is, not London

Down here the bags you'll most often see are Aldi bags for life

Mumped · 10/04/2023 09:40

Chelsea is such a naff area, though.

Ok, it’s eye watering it expensive so only very rich people live there. But the area itself is…not cool. It hasn’t been fashionable I n my lifetime (I’m in my forties).

I’m imagining the women you’ve seen are women who like living in or like being seen in this blatantly-rich-but-definitely-not-cool area and enjoy ostentatious displays of rich-but-not-cool branded bags etc.

And at no point did I say it was cool. I was there as I’d been at an exhibition at the Saatchi gallery, which was extremely cool, highly recommend, and was people watching afterwards . It was a total tongue in cheek post humouring the MN cliche that rich people wouldn’t dream of ever wearing a label.

Of course rich people wear labels.

It just wouldn't be obvious to the peasantry.

Sudeko · 10/04/2023 09:52

You are overthinking the whole thing. There has always been a mix of people around : wealthy non-label wearers, wags, nannies with school children, cleaners, dog walkers. It is a different crowd to elsewhere but not really as you describe.

Mumped · 10/04/2023 09:55

Disclaimer: I don’t know anyone who lives in Chelsea Grin. I have one friend who lives in Fulham and is very well off and she wears head-to-toe Zara and a cheap rucksack when she’s not at work Grin.

Of course there are. Most people know what apart from those who swear that nobody wealthy could possibly dream of wearing a branded accessory and if they do they must surely be a day tripper from somewhere far less classy

The look you’re referring to is called “Chessex”.

K&C is dominated by new money these days <sniffs> hence the vulgarity.

😆 and what's wrong with "new" money? Some people on here need to get a life. Where do you live?

proppy · 10/04/2023 12:09

and what's wrong with "new" money?

I think it's the lack of links to slavery & oppression, dreadfully vulgar! 😆

Cherryblossoms85 · 10/04/2023 12:12

Only the aspiring middle classes even care about this stuff. The upper classes are wearing something that was expensive but well made 20 years ago. I'm wearing Berghaus 😂

Where does the oligarch and oil money fit between old and new and slavery and oppression (modern day and historic)?

(And I’m a leggings/trainers/puffer jacket scruffy Londoner)
