You know the wealthy classy look of understated expensive non branded clothes?

The ladies of Chelsea didn’t get the message. Just spent the day round Kensington and Chelsea, lots of ladies of all ages out and about. I assume they were relatively local as seemed to be meeting with friends in groups. Beautifully dressed, there were trainers galore but very few plain white ones. Still some vegas but plenty of golden goose and Gucci. One women in some wonderful shocking pink Gucci shoes and lots of general Gucci footwear, Women were wearing expensive beautiful casual outfits in shades of beige and cream. Cream cropped wide jeans. ,cream cotton jumpers. White T-shirts and one beautiful cream vashem ere wrap. But the mumsnet message that handbag branding needs to be discreet seems to have passed the ladies of Chelsea by. I would say that 90% of bags were Dior, YSL and Chanel worn by anyone from age about 18 -80 years old. Accessorised with a doodle, poodle or shihtzu of some form. Not a lab or working dog to be seen. So much for subtle and understated, May be true but not when it comes to bag or shoes

Well as you're the poster who mentioned "the bridge and tunnel brigade" my subjective opinion is don't give yourself too many pats on the back about how "classy" you are.

And of course that is your prerogative to do so.

I used the term to highlight to the OP that she couldn’t assume that the people she was people watching in central London on a Bank Holiday weekend were residents but were more likely tourists - similar to another PP making her observation about how tourists dressed different in Paris to residents.

Statistically this is likely the case as tourism in London is huge currently.

However the OP came back to clarify and confirmed that she is correct that they are local residents as she overheard their conversations about local private schools.

So all good and it was left at that from my point of view.

You could have just said "tourists". "Bridge and tunnel brigade" is obviously meant pejoratively.

and what's wrong with "new" money?

I think it's the lack of links to slavery & oppression, dreadfully vulgar! 😆

This!

Thanks for the thread OP, livened up my day and I learned a new expression too - bridge & tunnel (barf!!!)

I love mine, had them 10 yrs and they havent changed them one bit in that time.

My GG don't have a wedge inside.

No wedge heels here either! Does poster mean those Marant wedge trainers of old?

I could have done and in hindsight should have done - though ‘tourist’ doesn’t really capture day trips IMHO - I thought B&T just meant suburban day tripper - wasn’t aware it was a sensitive term.

Aha@NatashaDancing

That poster keeps getting me deleted

I think I called her an idiot.

No. Your own behaviours get you deleted.

Have a read of the talk guidelines that MNHQ have sent to you and take it up with them if you don’t like their etiquette that everyone else is able to comply with.

5 deletions across 4 pages suggests you are not taking on board their feedback.

Do people actually worry about this kind of stuff and scrutinise strangers ? It's so pathetic buy whatever you feel like.

London. Nothing wrong with new money it itself - I’d like some myself. However it’s often allied to flash taste and general prink.

That's fine as long as the purchaser is happy with what they've bought. It would be a dull world if everyone wanted to look "expensive " and "classy".

I feel like this thread is by a bunch of aliens studying human culture. It's bonkers.

Oh I look at what strangers are wearing all the time. I'm really interested in what people wear. But, it's then divided into "nah, not for me" or "yes !! take notes"

I don't feel the need to disparage the"not for me" group.

It’s not fine no. I don’t like bad taste, I find it upsetting.

I doubt anyone cares. You do realise someone might find YOUR taste upsetting?

proppy · 10/04/2023 15:42

@mybeautifuloak the "classic" GGs do though, like the copy that was linked a few posts up.

proppy · 10/04/2023 15:49

@WowIlikereallyhateyou what style do you have? I have 3 pairs of superstars & have tried on ball stars.

You realise you might find life easier if you don’t take online comments so seriously?

My life is fine thanks. I tend not to judge people. You should try it?

Oh I love judging people’s taste. Why would I stop something I enjoy?

FrillyGoatFluff · 10/04/2023 17:01

Don't know why you'd expect to see a lab or working dog. Apparently the only acceptable pooch to have is a retired greyhound... 😉

yogibutton · 10/04/2023 17:33

I found the OP post funny; and can confirm whenever I am in Chelsea I find myself in a sea of cream (colour). But maybe it did begin a weird dynamic...

I have only recently started hanging out at Style & Beauty and I am amazed how many posters there are who are so keen to align fashion and style with privilege, class, wealth, using the most derogatory terms for whatever people you might think of - those who buy things with logos, those who don't buy high end stuff, those who can't afford Loro Piana, and who buy the wrong kind of high end, old and young, etc etc

This month, there were peasants, sans culottes, chavs, Essex girls, new money, - and I am sure I haven't recognised some insults because I am foreign! One would think there is a grain of truth to suspicions that it is ... mmmmmm.... a certain kind of vacuous people who are into style & fashion... :) I might need to limit my time here - a pity because I like fashion as an art form

No. It's you that keeps reporting my (really quite innocuous comments).

Why?
