You know the wealthy classy look of understated expensive non branded clothes?

The ladies of Chelsea didn’t get the message. Just spent the day round Kensington and Chelsea, lots of ladies of all ages out and about. I assume they were relatively local as seemed to be meeting with friends in groups. Beautifully dressed, there were trainers galore but very few plain white ones. Still some vegas but plenty of golden goose and Gucci. One women in some wonderful shocking pink Gucci shoes and lots of general Gucci footwear, Women were wearing expensive beautiful casual outfits in shades of beige and cream. Cream cropped wide jeans. ,cream cotton jumpers. White T-shirts and one beautiful cream vashem ere wrap. But the mumsnet message that handbag branding needs to be discreet seems to have passed the ladies of Chelsea by. I would say that 90% of bags were Dior, YSL and Chanel worn by anyone from age about 18 -80 years old. Accessorised with a doodle, poodle or shihtzu of some form. Not a lab or working dog to be seen. So much for subtle and understated, May be true but not when it comes to bag or shoes

Years ago I used to work with a girl who was hugely wealthy, old money and had an incredible flat on Eaton Square and she was normally every inch the cashmere sweater and expensively and understatedly dressed cliche that MN is that obsessed with but she also had the best trainers and (this is a throwback) Maharishi trousers which cost £100s whereas the rest of us had to make to with army trousers from Camden market.

I do remember her SIL coming into the office and she was a well known, v posh journalist and she looked like a different species to us because she was so well groomed and fancy.

Ooolaaaala · 10/04/2023 12:24

Does S&B normally attract this many post deletions on a thread?

My post was about the upper-classes post WW1 deciding that slow-decine was smart.

Nothing offensive.

I really like those Goose trainers- they look already worn in and cool

As trainers go (and generally that's as far away from me as possible please) they're amongst the most inoffensive I've seen.

I think I've got the point of what the OP was trying to get at - which is challenging inverted snobbery and clichés.

They have wedge heels inside so they tend to look better on the leg then standard trainers, I like the arch support.

My GG don't have a wedge inside.

Exactly. Thank you. That’s exactly it.

Very poor behaviour.

Hmmm, that summary of what women lunching in Chelsea might pinpoint their wealthy, but not their style, and certainly not the “wealthy classy look”. It sounds pretty in classy to me …

But then I have tailor made suits that are20 years old.

Cherryblossoms85 · 10/04/2023 12:12

Only the aspiring middle classes even care about this stuff. The upper classes are wearing something that was expensive but well made 20 years ago. I'm wearing Berghaus 😂

This is such a tired old stereotype. The Uber rich I know don't wear old shite. They wear Bottega and Loro Piana and yes, the odd bit of Gucci. They buy stuff every season. I'm not Uber rich but I am what would be considered very very well off and I mix my Zara with my Celine and I have a lot of very nice bags.

Cherryblossoms85 · 10/04/2023 13:13

@mybeautifuloak you know upper class and well off aren't actually the same thing?

ProstituteHair · 10/04/2023 13:21

@mybeautifuloak, yes!

It is tiresome.

I'm not a billionaire.

I am what is classed as upper middle class.

I have a huge amount of disposable income. I spend a lot of money on clothes.

People like me, and my 'class' do spend what is considered to be a huge amount of money on clothes.

We don't all shamble about in rags.

😆 and what's wrong with "new" money? Some people on here need to get a life. Where do you live?

London. Nothing wrong with new money it itself - I’d like some myself. However it’s often allied to flash taste and general prink.

Florissant · 10/04/2023 13:28

Coffeepot72 · 09/04/2023 21:08

Why do people need to be so unpleasant on a fashion thread?

Because it gives them a much-needed sense of superiority.

Ooolaaaala · 10/04/2023 13:30

Houseyvibe · 10/04/2023 13:26

Wealthy and classy are two different things.

The former is objective and the latter subjective.

Which means that everyone has the freedom to decide what they decide is classy for them.

It’s all down to own personal values, taste and choice as to what you decide is ‘classy’ - and anyone else can have their own equally valid take on what they consider classy.

theangrylion · 10/04/2023 13:34

You get a mix in k&c as there are people from all different backgrounds. You will get the plain but expensive outfits as well as the flashy ones. I was in Paris recently and there were plenty of Gucci, Chanel, Prada and Goyards head to toe flying around with locals. Funnily enough, there were plenty of tourists doing the 'Emily in Paris' look with bright pink wool coats, white ankle length socks with chunky loafers and a bright pink beret.

mybeautifuloak · 10/04/2023 13:35

Cherryblossoms85 · 10/04/2023 13:13

@mybeautifuloak you know upper class and well off aren't actually the same thing?

Yes yes of course I do. And the people I refer to are both very rich and very titled. Then there are those that are extraordinarily wealthy (far wealthier in some cases) from creating successful businesses and then those old families that are asset rich but cash poor. The latter are the only people I know who wear old shite and that's literally because they don't have the money to buy new expensive clothing. They totally would if they could. Always banging on about how they hate being skint.

Well as you're the poster who mentioned "the bridge and tunnel brigade" my subjective opinion is don't give yourself too many pats on the back about how "classy" you are.

Mirabai · 10/04/2023 13:37

I do love MN myths about upper classes. 🧚🏻‍♀️

This thread is a fascinating. Such a lot of classist assumptions and stereotypes (and nonsense). I love it!

NatashaDancing · 10/04/2023 13:48

Most of us west/south west Londoners are at our holiday homes/skiing. The majority you will have seen today will be tourists

I couldn't work out if this ^^ was parody or not. I initially thought parody but the "bridge and tunnel brigade" comment followed on so quickly it probably wasn't.

Wow . I wasn't aware of Golden Goose but the trainers look like the love child of Hush and M&S from three years ago that someone's scribbled on with a biro.

Hahaha yes!!

I have a temperature of 39 today and I can’t work out if this thread is something my fever addled brain has hallucinated
