So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

MIDI T-shirt dresses for me. Tbh I've never embraced the floral trend as being large of breast/belly I just look like I'm in a tent/maternity dress. I like a T-shirt dress that's not too fitted but that skims my boobs and belly, not wide and baggy. Wear with vans because I'm just a 45yr old emo lol but also denim jacket/biker jacket/blazer as with the florals tbh and flip flops when it's hot.

saveforthat · 08/04/2023 17:58

I'm a bit offended that you think this look is/was only OK up to the age of 55. What should us oldies be wearing twin sets and tweed skirts?

FiddleLeaf · 08/04/2023 18:01

I’m wearing the same shape dress and trainers but gone a bit more abstract with the design.

Love an old man sweater vest over the top too 🧓🏼

michaelmacrae · 08/04/2023 18:01

I still like it. But I've got lots of solid colour dresses, it doesn't have to be floral

whirlyhead · 08/04/2023 18:03

I only wear dresses in summer and can’t say I’ve ever noticed women where I live in wonderful trendy Cheshire wearing floral dresses and trainers. Where is this a thing? It’s all vertiginous heels, skinny skin tight jeans and low cut clingy tops here. All bloody year round. Whatever your age.

Logicoutofthewindow · 08/04/2023 18:11

Whatever I jolly well like. How boring being told what to wear and what is no longer 'in'.

Am 47. There have been variations of this look for decades - I was wearing this 10 years ago, and 10 years before than, and in my late teens when grunge was all the rage - there is always some version of a floral dress, jacket and trainers. (In my late teens, I wore floral dresses with biker boots.) I have pictures of my mother wearing Laura Ashley floral dresses albeit with espadrilles or clogs in the 70s. Skip back further, floral dresses were worn in each and every decade. Floral dress are nothing new, and a timeless classic. As for colour block dresses, again, these have been around forever too.

The only thing that really changes is the cut of the dress. Fashion trends work in cycles, but there will always be staples that are adapted and reworked to look fresh.

Totally agree.

I went to uni 1988-1992 and I lived in floral dresses, black tights and Doc Martins. Oversized cardis and a satchel completed the look.

Spanielsarepainless · 08/04/2023 18:18

I didn't know this had been a thing. Too much mud here for white trainers and floral midi dress sounds like Boris's OH.

LeatherSkirt82 · 08/04/2023 18:20

I’ll be doing boyfriend non-stretchy jeans with bottoms rolled up once or twice and will combine it with anything from t-shirt and a blazer to a floral top and cardi. Also goes with bretons, sneakers and ankle biker boots or even heels. That’s my new basic.

Monicagellar86 · 08/04/2023 18:21

Swapping dresses for linen / lightweight dungarees because I live in a windy town and the anxiety of my dress blowing up all Summer is too much.

I also have some new cargo trousers from Next which are gorgeous.

I might get a couple of plain chambray / neutral dresses but no patterns.

Trainers are converse or slip on Vans = I can't afford new and I've had these for 9 years (they still look nice as I only wear them in the Summer)

Monicagellar86 · 08/04/2023 18:22

Oh and a camo shacket.
And a black denim jacket instead of blue

MrsCornelius · 08/04/2023 18:23

I love the floral midi look. No plans to switch to (yuk) trouser suits!

JaneFondue · 08/04/2023 18:23

I am not much of a dress person but going to try out some block colour tshirt dresses from Uniqlo.

unsync · 08/04/2023 18:29

To be fair, once John Lewis declare something is done, it has been dead a while already.

Dresses are just so easy and the cotton floral midi is the easiest of the lot.

No thinking needed, wear with the flats of your choice for every day, heels, wedges, platforms for special occasions.

Dress 'em up, dress 'em down, stick a cardigan, shawl, linen, leather, denim or tweed jacket over them. Wear for everything from slobbing around in the garden to wear to a wedding.

I can't imagine where , when or how I'd wear a trouser suit.

I love barrel leg trousers. They can be so flattering

Me too! Who is selling them at the moment?

cloudonego · 08/04/2023 18:33

Lots of mini floral dresses from what I can see, so going to go for that with trainers. And still loving cotton wide leg short trousers, no idea if they are stylish but they are comfortable!

CarPoor · 08/04/2023 18:34

I will continue to wear my midis. I own quite a few and I'm not going to throw them out just because John Lewis tell me to

I tend to wear them with boots or sandals rather than trainers, but either way the floral midi is staying

tobee · 08/04/2023 18:35

Thanks for the tip @GonnaGetGoingReturns

StarDolphins · 08/04/2023 18:38

I don’t like most floral dresses on me so I will be wearing other midi dresses. I want a sage green textured one & a black t-shirt one, along with my existing lemon broderie one & leopard print one.

I also don’t like white trainers so instead I will be wearing platform & no platform converse & Birkenstocks

Also looking forward to wide leg linen trousers with a variety of tops (spotty, safari, animal print etc)

Baneofmyexistence · 08/04/2023 18:38

I’m sick of being told I ‘can’t’ wear what suits me because some clothing company wants me to shell out for a new wardrobe. Sod that. Most of the young women I saw out today were wearing baggier style trousers and a fitted crop top. Looks lovely if you are 20 and skinny but I’m 38 and had three kids so that’s not a trend I want to follow! I’m sticking with I feel comfortable in and suits my shape.

MintJulia · 08/04/2023 18:38

Linen or cotton dresses, deck shoes (I can't get on with trainers), maxi skirts or straight leg jeans, and short cotton sweaters.

Ballet flats for in the office.

To be fair, once John Lewis declare something is done, it has been dead a while already.

On the other hand the likes of Net-a- Porter are awash with floral midis from Erdem, Saloni, Emilia Wickstead, Zimmerman, Doen, Rixo, Batsheva, Dolce and Gabanna, Isobel Marant etc, etc, etc.
