So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I didn't get on board with the white trainers and dress look/chunky athletics trainers and dresses look. The white trainers and floral dress outfits to me has headed the same way as breton tops, waterfall cardigans and skinny jeans outfits did.

Converse and skirts have been in my wardrobe in some form since my mid teens, though the details have evolved as my style changes.

Dare I say it, I'm not loving my denim jacket over outfits this spring either.

I like wide leg trousers or a midi skirt with casual sandals or converse.

BebbanburgIsMine · 08/04/2023 15:49

Sticking with my floral midi/axi dresses because I love them.

I've always worn maxi length and tiered skirts, never been a jeans or trousers person, I do have one pair of jeans but I don't own any other trousers at all.

I've never cared what is in fashion, I wear what I like, and what suits me. I have quite a lot of dresses and skirts!

Quote from the original article (the OP’s link didn’t work for me), my emphasis:

Justifying her floral midi cull Ferrer said: “Our customer still loves a floral dress – and * of course, we listen to her and make sure we have what she likes. But* we don’t want her to just keep buying what she already owns.”

or, we don’t want her to just keep buying (and she won’t if it’s) what she already owns.

@LolaSmiles I gave away my denim jacket recently as realised I didn't wear it once last year. Think they were just everywhere for so long I didn't want to wear it

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/04/2023 16:29

I like broderie midi dresses and am going to try to get a couple more of those. Not sure what shoes/trainers yet, but I might get some Teva sandals for comfort!

I’ll still be wearing my floral midis dresses and trainers, but then I still love and wear skinny jeans which are also apparently passé.

This. I look and feel fabulous in both so will be wearing these styles with great happiness. I'm 57 and couldn't give a fuck what the fashionistas decree. They can fuck off to the other side of fuck.

Powerof321 · 08/04/2023 16:48

I’ll be wearing my floral (or plain) midi dresses with converse same as every year or a cropped jumpsuit. I live in skinny jeans - i wear what i like & whats comfortable!

Wallingtonhall · 08/04/2023 16:51

Been wearing dresses with trainers for years. Won’t be changing anytime soon!

NatashaDancing · 08/04/2023 16:53

I discovered 3 previously unknown floral midi dress sites today. I think rumours of its death have been greatly exaggerated.

John Lewis, Boden, M and S clothing are all struggling. We all have the maxi dresses by now ( if we wanted them) and ,with the cost of living crisis, are probably not rushing out to buy new ones. They have to convince us that that look is dead in order to survive. We can buy the new ideas they come up with if we wish or we can get out the perfectly good clothes we already have and get on with life.

Porridgeandtoast · 08/04/2023 17:04

I have never worn a pair of trainers unless doing some sort of sport. I absolutely hate the trainers and dress look on me (fine on others) and I look forward to other types of footwear being available.

ConstanceOcean · 08/04/2023 17:04

I can’t work out if I’m really fashionable or really unfashionable.

I guess really unfashionable as I would never wear something depending on whether it was deemed ‘in’ or ‘not dead’.

If I like something and it looks good I’ll wear it and if not I won’t.

Other types of footwear are and always were available. I'm permanently in dresses, but not trainers.

Londontown12 · 08/04/2023 17:17

Linen trouser suits
barrel leg trousers
loose dungarees
anything oversized and neutrals
stripes as well x

Well yes of course. After all I do wear something on my feet! Obviously I meant I look forward to the percentage white trainers diminishing and having a greater volume of alternatives. Although it may just be more coloured trainers.

Laurdo · 08/04/2023 17:30

Not a floral person but I'm enjoying the bright suit trouser trend that seems to be in this spring. I picked up a pair of bright pink linen type trousers from Matalan. Fabric is very light weight so perfect for warmer days. I teamed with with a plain white fitted t-shirt and white converse. I've also seen some lovely plain vibrant coloured shirt dresses and will probably pick up a few of those for spring /summer.

If the floral dresses are you think I wouldn't stop wearing them just because some stylist said they aren't in this year.

Definitelycross · 08/04/2023 17:37

I have a lot of colour block dresses, including black. Also a couple of culotte midis. All from Cos.

I've bought a lovely green and pink midi dress from Next recently but really went off flowery ones last year, so this feels strange again.

I was fed up of seeing white trainers so I bought gold ones and some amazing green and pink adidas ones. I also wear Birkenstocks, cream DM sandals or white DM shoes.

I love wide leg, slightly cropped jeans and thankfully I don't live anywhere that gets really hot - ever - so I think I'll be fine 😂

Also no denim jacket - khaki or camo instead.

tobee · 08/04/2023 17:38

What did people wear before this trend? It hasn't been around forever really, just seems like it!

I've not really been a one for floral dresses very often because I feel I need something more substantial to hold my tummy in. And then I had heavy periods until my hysterectomy and felt a bit vulnerable. I often wear jersey culottes or similar.

samestyle · 08/04/2023 17:38

Not keen on floral, I'll be wearing plain dresses, midi or shirt dresses with flat sandals in the summer or loafers. Or light coloured trousers and top.

tobee · 08/04/2023 17:39

Also white trainers - I'll just get them mucky ASAP

MsRosley · 08/04/2023 17:40

Don't worry, OP, in a few years you'll be older and won't give a fuck what some random in the fashion pages says.

trebarwith1 · 08/04/2023 17:46

I'm buying shirt dresses, adding a cool belt and bag and giving everyone a look that says I love this outfit and I don't give a shit. X

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 08/04/2023 17:50

I’m still doing midi dress and trainers look but last summer I wore:-

  • black cotton short sleeved jumpsuit with trainers/sandals
  • F&F ripped stretch jeans with trainers/sandals, pinky broderie Anglais trim top (M&S) and bright pink blazer.

I also have printed midi skirts which I wear either with sandals/trainers or tops/black T-shirts.

I used to think this but got a trainer protector and stain remover and as long as I’m not trekking through mud it works!
