So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I want polyester ideally so no ironing at all. I know most MNers hate it but I'm a big fan as long as it's decent quality and thin.

I'd say a midi t shirt style dress with trainers, and an oversized shirt over (instead of blazer/denim jacket)
I saw a reel with it styled that way and looked really casual and comfortable but still stylish.

Oh this sounds good - sorts my seasonal issue of avoiding “getting my arms out”

tomfromloveislandsbeard · 09/04/2023 20:04

This mightn't need ironing.

@Greenolivetrees I think it probably depended on whether you followed 'high street' fashion or not. I was definitely wearing maxi silk slip dresses with velvet converse in the early 1990s.

But it wasn't commonplace or classic and I doubt that your velvet converse were bright white.

Yes, people wore florals decades ago, yes they wore midi's. Yes, they wore bright white trainers. But the combination wasn't a classic look. My first comment was in response to someone who said that midi floral dresses with white trainers is a classic look. I claim that it probably isn't because it wasn't a commonplace look decades ago so the chance of it being/becoming a classic look is quite small.

Can anyone post some nice midi/maxi dresses??

really keen on buying some! :)

It was the classic uniform in West London in the early 90s ….

proppy · 09/04/2023 20:50

In the 90s I used to wear long floral button through dresses from the likes of Tammy girl with white converse or white adidas, I also had some Supergas, they weren't really a thing here until later. I used to wear my nikes with combats or turned up jeans. You couldn't really do all night raving unless you were in trainers 😆

EllaPaella · 09/04/2023 20:52

I don't wear trainers in summer. I live in sandals from June onwards and this year I have some lovely Lotta from Stockholm clogs that I anticipate wearing as much as possible.
I do have a floral dress but I'm not really a dress person so their demise won't really concern me however I think it's highly unlikely that floral dresses are going to disappear from the high street anytime soon.
I have made a couple of summery purchases- two Cos dresses. One is a black maxi dress and the other a black ribbed tube dress. I'd like a pair of cream or beige wide leg trousers (not linen) with a darted waist that are light enough to wear in warm weather. I love summer dressing and find it much easier to wear things I love than winter dressing.
Interested to know what others are going to be wearing this summer.

@Ooolaaaala

If that is do than can you please post pictures of it? I'm happy to stand corrected but nobody has yet been able to produce pictures of for example a high street full with people with this look.

So do you have pictures of decades ago of the combination floral midi dress with bright white trainers? Because if you're just focussing on some kind of floral dress then yes, they are classic. But it's the combination that is quite new.

The combination is definitely decades old.

I agree. I was wearing white trainers with skirts/dresses many years ago. Some people like to think they invented fashion, and it makes me laugh when they are actually wearing something I wore in my youth. It's sad that so many slavishly wear what they perceive to be trendy, and then drop it simply because someone says they shouldn't be wearing it any more.

You are supposed to love what you wear, not wear it simply because you want to fit in with everyone else.

Notanothernewname · 09/04/2023 21:25

I used to wear short dresses with trainers (black converse) back in the 90s, I had a couple of baby doll dresses which were floral (but my go to was a tartan pinafore) that was the Grunge era though. But before that I remember wearing Reebook classics with skirts and dresses. It was the time Rave was taking off.

Lndnmummy · 09/04/2023 21:34

Block colour midi dresses with sandals/trainers. Linene dresses.

Tbf there are a lot less pictures from the 90s in general as no social media & less street style in magazines.

FancyFanny · 09/04/2023 22:10

The whole floral midi/maxi dress with trainers is not a classic look- I don't recall it being the default look it is today. I'm 50 and have never worn it other than the last few years, nor do I remember anyone I know wearing that look in the 80s 90s or even the 2000s.

I the 90s I wore strappy little baby doll dresses and skinny-rib tops with little cotton pumps similar to converse, chunky laces like doc martens, kickers or flatform sandals with floaty trousers. Chunky mules were also a thing. In the 2000s it was maxi skirts and dresses with thin strappy sandals and ballet pumps with everything for years and years. Slouchy suede boots were also popular with long skirts in the early 2000s. I might have worn trainers with converse and jeans and even shorts back in the day, but don't ever remember the chunky white trainers and floral skirts being a thing until fairly recently.

Neverhappyalwayshopeful · 09/04/2023 22:11

I've been seeing a lot of satin and t-shirt dresses so far this year. I think that will be the alternative to florals.

Pestispeeved · 09/04/2023 22:14

The world did not exist before 19991 and even the first half of the 90s is sketchy.
Elle 1987 midi skirt with while trainers/ plimsoles. In the 1980s Lady Di and Fergie wore floral midi dresses with white pumps, you just know Fergie wore trainers at home.

Working Girl 1988, white trainers on a woman going to work, this was also a thing when I was working in NY in 1986. We went to bars after work in white trainers, heels stayed under the desk.

High streets full of it, no. My DM was drifting between 1956-1978. The fact my friends did not wear petticoats under their floral dresses was shocking.

So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Also no camera phones, so people weren't constantly taking pictures of themselves/everything. I doubt there are more than half a dozen pictures of me in existence from the age of about 12 to 35 (thank God).

SisSuffragette · 09/04/2023 22:20

I wonder about the cycle shorts & big sweater/ t shirt look currently seen in a few places. I am considering making this my spring/summer look.

Because it wasn’t a ‘High St’ look at all - more pulled together from Portobello / Camden market.

It’s how I and many of my friends dressed as did many of the other 20 somethings in the bars and clubs we socialised in Notting Hill / central London in the 90s. We thought we were cool, casual and funky!!

Can you show pictures of Fergie and Di in midi dresses and trainers in the 80s because I can't recall these...

OMG that’s another 90s throw back (maybe even 80s?) looked shit back then on most people !

GarlicGrace · 09/04/2023 22:24

True that everyone wasn't taking endless pictures of ourselves in the 1990s. PPs are telling the truth, though! I found this from a 1995show - you can just see the trainers - and a mercifully short video with at least two women in long florals with trainers/flat boots, here:

If you were willing to slog through tedious "driving/walking through London" videos of the era, you could see lots of said outfits, and others that think they're new this decade. I know because I just had to microwave a dinner as I used my cooking time on YouTube 😂

So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Can you learn to read?

Do a google and you will find oodles of pictures of them at formal occasions in midi dresses and white pumps.

That's why I'm asking- I googled and couldn't find a single picture- nor did I see anyone in the video linked above in a floral dress and white trainers. I only saw one woman and she was wearing red flat shoes- the rest were wearing ankle boots of some sort.
