So what are we wearing instead of floral midi dress and white trainers this Spring?

Like many 35-55yo women I've been wearing a floral midi dress with trainers every Spring/Summer for the past few years. I always buy dresses with pockets and love the comfort, practicality and coolness (temperature-wise) on a sunny day. Easy to layer under a denim jacket, biker or blazer and wear with any white trainers or converse etc.

It was inevitable that such an easy outfit would become so ubiquitous that the fashion world declared it "dead".

I'm gutted but I am a follower of style. So yes, I know it's shallow but this is the Style board so.... What other outfits fit the brief?

One journalist in the Sunday papers suggested trouser suits are the new floral midi dress and trainers. But I don't think a trouser suit would work in a hot day like a flowery dress would, no matter how much you keep it casual with a t-shirt and trainers - it's still too hot surely?

If you're a follower of trends, what will you be wearing instead of floral midi from now on?

I quite like something like this from New Look?
https://www.newlook.com/uk/p/859726219?extcam=UK_SOC_APPPDPSHARE
Although would probably go trainers not sandals.

I really like that dress @MrsRinaDecker I prefer that sort of thing to florals.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 09/04/2023 18:32

It is a new thing to wear trainers with absolutely everything, especially for young people, trainers with tight dresses, minis etc, it wasn't a thing in the past, people wore trainers with sports clothes, or some quite unfashionable people wore trainers with naff jeans and that was it. The sales of trainers in the past 15 years have gone crazy. It's a moment, but it isn't going to last forever. It's popular as it's very comfy and easy, but nothing ever truly lasts.

That's how I & all my peers dressed as a teen in the 90s...

It's the styles that were in in the 90s coming back around, trainers were massive in the 90s!

Highdaysandholidays1 · 09/04/2023 18:44

Agreed young people were wearing trainers in 90s but middle-aged women weren't! It wasn't til skinnies and then dresses/trainers that all ages started looking similar and shopping in similar shops. Before that, young people looked very different than their parents and grandparents, I sometimes feel a bit sorry for them now that these uniforms are so ubiquitous (which is probably why they started showing their lovely flat stomachs again in the hopes of seeing off the oldies).

KvotheTheBloodless · 09/04/2023 18:47

Cropped, straight leg jeans and a tank top for casual. And non-floral dresses. And wide-leg trousers and a cropped top or blouse, cause my tummy is toned for the first time since DC and I'm getting it out!

Comfies · 09/04/2023 18:48

I work with teenagers and they dress nothing like me (39). As a pp says they mainly wear crop tops with joggers, unless very religious. Lots of patterned, stretch flare trousers too and short shorts in summer. Occasionally you'll see a young hippy type who could be any age in terms of dress sense, but it is uncommon.

I agree it's a bit nicer for them to have their own style.

The Lucy and Yak type dopamine dressing is another look which seems to appeal to all ages, but not everyone in any age bracket.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 09/04/2023 18:50

Another trend is wearing sportswear (athleisure) as daytime wear, again, people did wear tracksuits in 80s and 90s but nothing like the domination of lycra we see now, although I wonder if that is slacking off a bit amongst the yummy mummies. The 'just off to the gym' look (think Amanda in Motherland) might also have peaked, I am not sure.

@NatashaDancing I had a memory of my mum wearing this combo in the early 1990s. I've just had a quick look through some family photos and there's one of her wearing white trainers (the exercise kind) with a floral midi length dress. I was probably horrified at the time.😂 I know that a sample size of one isn't much to go on but some people were definitely pairing those two around that time.

Thank you. I suppose my horror of school sports prevented me going anywhere near them. I've never owned the exercise kind. I was 30 in 1990. I'm now desperately trying to think what I wore on my feet in 1990.

proppy · 09/04/2023 18:56

@Highdaysandholidays1 I agree that parents dressed differently to young people in the 90s & do think it's a bit odd now that 14 yr olds dress the same as 50 yr olds but fashion is far more homogeneous now. I was just disagreeing with your point that said It is a new thing to wear trainers with absolutely everything, especially for young people, because all I wore was trainers!

@highfidelity

And no, thank you, I will not be sharing pictures of myself - this is a public message board. Given I do not have a FB account and my IG is private, I have no interest in sharing images here.

You don't have to. If it was so commonplace (according to you) decades ago to wear bright white trainers with midi floral dresses (the combination, not one or the other) than surely you'd be able to post some pictures of celebrities wearing that exact combi.

Lily Allen had a range based on this exact look 🤷🏻‍♀️

proppy · 09/04/2023 18:57

But crop tops will let the yoofs have a chance of breakingfree!

Joggers & hoodies were again a huge staple in the 90s particularly for boys/young men. I am a South Londoner though. But not so many leggings then, although I lived in them as an 80s kid.

Greenolivetrees · 09/04/2023 19:15

@FiddleLeaf

Please show me where she had that clothing line decades ago (spoiler: she didn't open her clothing store until 2010, which isn't decades ago).

Of course it happened, but it wasn't classic or trendy. You weren't supposed to wear trainers with longish dresses. With shorter dresses it was more fashionable (think converse with above the knee dress in the 90s).

Highdaysandholidays1 · 09/04/2023 19:21

@proppy they all still wear them round our way! (it's not posh).

You might have just tipped me into ordering it!

WeAreBorg · 09/04/2023 19:24

There’s too much argument going on here, can someone, @KrabiBeach maybe, summarise what we have learnt so far? What are we to wear this year????

I was thinking coloured trainers (have kept my old gazelles and Golas), wide leg trousers - hopefully these are still okay, cream/white silk t-shirt tops. If I am not concentrating on keeping white trainers clean then I can probably focus on avoiding chucking stuff on my white top right?

I like the pastel suits tbh but I don’t really suit mannish clothing. I also like the shirts knocking around (like Harper from White Lotus wearing Sandro) but I can’t iron!!

Bluebellwood129 · 09/04/2023 19:25

@Greenolivetrees I think it probably depended on whether you followed 'high street' fashion or not. I was definitely wearing maxi silk slip dresses with velvet converse in the early 1990s.

MrsBellamy · 09/04/2023 19:32

I'd say a midi t shirt style dress with trainers, and an oversized shirt over (instead of blazer/denim jacket)
I saw a reel with it styled that way and looked really casual and comfortable but still stylish.

GarlicGrace · 09/04/2023 19:44

I've just ordered 2 long, abstract-patterned skirts and a big stripy shirt because of this thread. Not cutting edge, granted, but I am older than god! I've also now decided I NEED some easy-fitting midi dresses.

This is why I rarely visit S&B ...

OddsocksinmyDocs · 09/04/2023 19:49

T shirt, jumpsuits and DMs Grin

tomfromloveislandsbeard · 09/04/2023 19:49

Oh no. I love the oversized floaty shirt in linen or striped cotton look. But I never iron anything so I'm out.

🤣👍

I've been wandering idly around the Fred Perry site since @Pigtailsandall (I think) mentioned polo dresses upthread. Luckily my train is here now so I can distract myself.

Last year, I bought a couple of linen cotton blend shirts from Esprit which were easier to iron. Looking for similar this year but not seen any yet.

Saw a lot of cargo trousers, while walking around in London today. Also non floral dresses.
