Italian summer wedding guest dress: yes or no?

JollieJullie · 26/03/2023 16:52

I am attending a wedding in Italy in July. The wedding and reception will be held in a villa's garden, so no church. Dress code is "chic garden party". Needless to say, it will be very hot!

I have my eyes on this particular dress, I love the back and the shade of green. Do you think it could work? Do you like it? Not sure about the shoes yet, maybe something gold? Thanks for your advice!

Revealing!? It just has a cut out back, how is that revealing?

I'm just sharing my point of view. I'm Italian and I wouldn't wear a dress with a cut out back to a wedding in Italy. Neither would my Italian friends. The dress is lovely, but not suitable for the occasion

"Linen or not - most Italians would consider this dress way too revealing for a wedding"

@snygghygge I don't know, I am Italian and it looks fairly ok to me? It covers legs and chest and shows shoulders and a little bit of back.. But I understand that different people have different opinions on this topic and point taken that for some this dress might be too skimpy. Thank you for your advice!

You're welcome! For what it's worth I think the dress is lovely - just not appropriate for the occasion

No, that is still evening wear style and fabric.

If there are Italian women there, they will be exquisitely groomed , wearing something cool, linen, very simple and elegant.

DO NOT go dressed as an escort in a night club.

This! With bells on

InSpainTheRain · 26/03/2023 20:59

It's a beautiful dress, but I would be worried about sweat patches. I'd say go for something more cotten/linen.

MissMaple82 · 26/03/2023 21:03

Oh I love it !!! 😀

All these people thinking they know all Italians and telling the OP what to wear 🙄

Wallabyone · 26/03/2023 21:13

I love it! It is chic and stunning, but I would go for the linen purely for the fact it'll be a bit cooler to wear.

Quite. I'm not Italian but have lived here for 30 years and where weddings are concerned, it's generally more is more 😂 The women will most definitely NOT be in understated linen anything. The colours will be blindingly bright and there will be a lot of shoulders and cleavages on show.
I'm used to it now, but I used to stand open-mouthed at the frockery. As a pp said, long, showy evening gowns similar to prom/ballgowns are pretty much par for the course.
I do have family members who opted for simple weddings, but they are few and far between.

MerryMarigold · 26/03/2023 21:28

Sorry to confuse. I like the silk much more than the linen if you have the figure for it. It's beautiful. Only you know how sweaty you and the location may be! If you can pull it off I'd go for the green silk every time. Don't wear jersey, it'll be even hotter and just as likely to get a sweat patch!

NatashaDancing · 26/03/2023 21:36

  • was surprised at price, although silk, this doesn’t look like a £300 dress
  • sweat risk!

I agree - the silk version does not look like a £300 dress. The zip at the back looks badly sewn.

"Linen or not - most Italians would consider this dress way too revealing for a wedding"

What??? No they wouldn't 😂 one half of my family are from Como and this kind of dress is what you'd expect to see at a classy evening wedding in the lakes for example!

OP, love the dress. As somebody who's been lucky to attend a few very nice weddings in Lake Como in garden like settings, this is ideal. However, the weather as you probably know will be very warm so as long as you're not the sweaty type, you'll be grand!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 26/03/2023 21:49

It's a French/Italian wedding with (presumably) friends from Switzerland. Just in that one sentence, there are a million and one variables, and you are not going to be able to predict them all. The wedding of a bride from an artsy Milanese family to a Parisien from the 5th arrondissement is going to be very different from the wedding of a bride from rural Puglia to a banker from Grenoble.

The good news is that all the guests are going to be equally confused, and I reckon you can get away with almost anything.

That said, though the green silk dress is gorgeous, I agree with everyone warning about sweat stains. Italy can be a bastard for humidity, even at night. A crotch sweat mark is not a chic look. A navy or black silk would hide sweat better. Also, don't forget mosquitoes which can be a nightmare. Whatever you wear, take an emergency cover-up wrap, in case they are biting.

Some of it also comes down to how bothered you are about blending in. The French are competitive under-dressers. Their aim is to look amazing but also as if they haven't made too much effort. So they will probably be in something less evening-y than what you have in mind, But does it really matter if you are dressed differently from the majority, in such an international crowd? It sounds like a fabulous occasion. Go with something that makes you feel amazing (definitely not a polyester jump suit), and enjoy!

Point taken in regard to creasing! I don't typically sweat much so I am less worried about it. Also, the wedding is in a hilly area so slightly elevated, I hope that will help a bit with the temperature!

This jumpsuit could be an alternative? Still silk but darker colour: https://www.thereformation.com/products/sasha-silk-jumpsuit/1311974NGD.html?dwvar1311974NGDD_color=NGD&quantity=1

I love that jumpsuit. You clearly have an enviable figure!

Aria999 · 26/03/2023 23:52

And I like the linen version of your original, feels more weddingy.

Theblacksheepandme · 27/03/2023 00:37

I think the dress is stunning OP. As long as you don't add a pashmina and facinator with it.

Appleblum · 27/03/2023 03:18

The first dress is absolutely lovely! But I'd be worried about sweat patches. The linen version is quite meh.

WimbleOfWombledon · 27/03/2023 07:12

I love the black patterned jumpsuit the OP linked to.

Reiss have some beautiful dresses on their website at the moment which would fit the brief as well.

JollieJullie · 26/03/2023 19:05

Just realized that the dress comes in linen too: www.thereformation.com/products/casette-linen-dress/1312295WIW.html

Maybe that's an option?

Much nicer

EllaPaella · 27/03/2023 07:27

The first dress is absolutely stunning.

cathyandclare · 27/03/2023 07:29

That linen version is stunning!

VictorianBathroomTiles · 27/03/2023 07:31

The original dress is lovely but agree with the sweat issue. The linen version is absolutely perfect! (Have been to Italian weddings!)

EllaPaella · 27/03/2023 07:37

You clearly have excellent taste OP, you honestly don't need anyone here to advise. Your choice is likely to be nicer.

EllaPaella · 27/03/2023 07:38

The linen version is absolutely gorgeous too.

mrschocolatte · 27/03/2023 07:39

I love both dresses you posted links to OP. I’m a big believer that if you really love something, don’t worry about what other people think. It’s your body, your confidence and your style!

The wedding destination sounds beautiful. I am going to spend the rest of my morning working hard at my desk daydreaming about floating around a summer wedding party wearing my latest crush….

OP please don't get a jumpsuit, your dress picks are beautiful. I bought a reformation dress for a wedding recently and it's the best cut piece of clothing I own. I think the silk dress would be lovely if you can figure out the underwear situation.
