Italian summer wedding guest dress: yes or no?

JollieJullie · 26/03/2023 16:52

I am attending a wedding in Italy in July. The wedding and reception will be held in a villa's garden, so no church. Dress code is "chic garden party". Needless to say, it will be very hot!

I have my eyes on this particular dress, I love the back and the shade of green. Do you think it could work? Do you like it? Not sure about the shoes yet, maybe something gold? Thanks for your advice!

And now you're getting recommendations for high street in options in synthetic fabrics, which really will make you sweaty, when you're clearly looking for something a bit more high end. 😕

I despair of this place sometimes.

🤣🤣🤣

You seem very easily triggered to despair, @MadameSzyszkoBohusz ...do you need a lie-down, or possibly some smelling salts?

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 26/03/2023 19:46

Yes. Your horrible taste in clothes has sent me straight to my fainting couch.

(I actually quite like the jumpsuits - well, the first one at least. But they're a world away from what the OP was looking at.)

JollieJullie · 26/03/2023 19:05

Just realized that the dress comes in linen too: www.thereformation.com/products/casette-linen-dress/1312295WIW.html

Maybe that's an option?

That's beautiful and perfect - much nicer than the silk version and a gazillion times nicer than any jumpsuit.

Yes linen will crease but so what.

Laquila · 26/03/2023 19:50

Ooh your fainting couch must be a bugger to spot-clean, though, in 100% undyed mulberry silk?!...be careful!

In all seriousness though, you're right up to a point, but sometimes the mystique of Mumsnet leads us down unplanned paths...to synthetics...and we just need to ignore and move on 😁

Bunny2021 · 26/03/2023 19:50

I love the linen one. It keeps popping up on my targeted ads - unfortunately I don’t quite have the body shape to pull it off.

I think it would perfect for the wedding.

onetimenamec · 26/03/2023 19:51

JollieJullie · 26/03/2023 19:35

@onetimenamec is it very unforgiving? How about the creasing/ sweaty patches?

I never found either to be a problem. I considered the linen version but I thought the silk was more glamourous and worked beautifully in the afternoon sunlight.

NatashaDancing · 26/03/2023 19:51

Laquila · 26/03/2023 19:29

Having said all that about prints above, OP, how do you feel about this? I LOVE it!

Monsoon green jersey wide-leg jumpsuit

Sorry but everything about that is horrible - shape, colour, material.

Agreed - and what is the obsession with jumpsuits - there have been some horrific alternatives suggested.

onetimenamec · 26/03/2023 19:58

@JollieJullie The other time I wore it was to a beach restaurant on a small island where you can have a swim before your meal from the private beach. That worked better because I wasn't as self conscious about it being transparent. I have not worn it in the UK.

villainousbroodmare · 26/03/2023 20:00

The green and white linen dress is the one for me, by a mile.

Gets my vote too.

Love it in orange but don't have the colouring for it and with a touch of sunburn I'd just glow 😂

Hi, @NatashaDancing, do you mean my four suggestions? Don't worry, I'm back in my box now, with the other povvos!

kitsuneghost · 26/03/2023 17:04

Too showy

It's definitely not too showy for a wedding in Italy. It's exactly the kind of dress people will be expecting.

FettleOfKish · 26/03/2023 20:12

The linen is much nicer and while exactly the same fit doesn't seem as 'on show' as the very clingy silk.

I don't think you've answered the question OP but it will make a difference to overall style if it's Italian couple / Italian guests Vs a destination wedding with (for example) British or Irish guests.

To the best of my memory, and the photos I have, every female Italian guest at the one I attended was wearing full length and floaty, almost 'prom dress' kind of thing. Actually what British Women might consider 'Bridesmaidy'. The only Women wearing thin straps or low cut were the very small of chest. Nobody was in anything especially figure hugging.

It was also evening, Villa and gardens. It was in the hills outside Rome and hotter than Satan's oven even at 3am.

Sticking with Reformation, there was much more of this kind of thing...

The dresses suggested were awful - the lime green, frilled polyester one in particular.

The OP was considering an expensive silk dress. She's probably not looking for a polyester jump suit costing £24.

I don't know what "povvos" are.

So1invictus · 26/03/2023 20:13

@JollieJullie I'm in Italy and have been to more evening weddings like the one you described than I care to remember and the style of dress you've shown is PERFECT. I've not been to any wedding involving a late afternoon ceremony and evening reception where most of the women aren't in long elegant dresses like the ones you've shown. A jumpsuit would be OK, but it would have to be a very elegant one.
(On balance I like the linen dress best, but both are great)

I did reply earlier in the thread! It is an international couple (French/ Italian) living in Switzerland so I think the guest list will be international too Smile

The other flowered linen is lovely too.

FettleOfKish · 26/03/2023 20:16

@JollieJullie Sorry, I've been trying to keep up but missed that one! I'd be less worried if there's going to be a big mix of nationalities, as they'll each have their own styles to add to the mix.

Nosecan · 26/03/2023 20:28

I think all of your choices are beautiful op, you have great taste!

Go with your gut, I’m sure you know what suits you and what is appropriate.

No, the lime green frilled one wasn't to my taste either but I just cracked on and suggested something I did like, as generally I prefer that approach - I think it's nicer, on a fairly innocuous S&B thread, to avoid making people feel inferior just for making suggestions that may not be to my taste. But we're all different, aren't we 😊

  • was surprised at price, although silk, this doesn’t look like a £300 dress
  • sweat risk!
