Italian summer wedding guest dress: yes or no?

JollieJullie · 26/03/2023 16:52

I am attending a wedding in Italy in July. The wedding and reception will be held in a villa's garden, so no church. Dress code is "chic garden party". Needless to say, it will be very hot!

I have my eyes on this particular dress, I love the back and the shade of green. Do you think it could work? Do you like it? Not sure about the shoes yet, maybe something gold? Thanks for your advice!

I have to add whenever I hav worn satiny fabrics to a party I get wine and food splodges too which similarly show up, but you may be less of a messy partygoer than I am 😂

BungleandGeorge · 26/03/2023 18:04

I like it but I think it’s a little too formal, too bridesmaidy. Also think it will show sweat patches. How hot will it be?

NashvilleQueen · 26/03/2023 18:05

For an early evening wedding I think it's beautiful. I do think the pink one is more wedding-y but given yours is in the evening I think it would be perfect if you went for the green. My only issue would be creasing across the front where you're sitting down.

bubbles2023 · 26/03/2023 18:05

Sweat city with that dress. It's stunning but no in Italy in July.

MargotDeWitt · 26/03/2023 18:05

I think it's beautiful, but like a previous poster, prefer the floral design for a wedding.

Oh to be tall and slim!

juliettesmother · 26/03/2023 18:07

I love it

Pandyluna · 26/03/2023 18:07

It’s gorgeous! Would be worried about sweat though

MoneyInTheBananaStand · 26/03/2023 18:09

I would be worried about sweat patches on that dress tbh OP. Not necessarily armpits, but if you're sitting down, the backs of your thighs, and it will crease horribly.

The floral version will be more forgiving of hot weather I think.

Willowtre1 · 26/03/2023 18:13

I think it has the right sort of idea but it is just tipping over into a bit bridesmaidy for me. Like pp if it were a jumpsuit it would just change the dynamic enough. Secondary to that I agree it will probably be too hot and it would be awful to worry about sweat. I'd get for a floater material that will be totally forgiving in that sense. Perhaps the back is a bit too much look at me- unless there will be a lot of stunning, well dressed guests in which case it may fit in just right!

Absolutely stunning. If you wouldn't wear this chic dress for an evening wedding in Italy, when the hell would you?!

If you were a bridesmaid

If it’s going to be very hot I would be worried about sweat patches on that fabric.

Having attended a wedding in Rome last July, this was my first thought. That and it getting terribly creased as soon as you sit down because you'll have no choice but being slightly clammy damp all the time.

daretodenim · 26/03/2023 18:21

I can only speak to the fabric and heat, not the style and Italian part.

Firstly it's a beautiful dress , and I LOVE the colour!

Second as others have said, sweat patches will form almost immediately, unless you're inside in air conditioning. You'll have crotch, inner thigh and boob sweat areas to be wary of. And depending on how your stomach is when you sit, a line across your stomach. You could risk it with copious amounts of talc that are reapplied, but maybe that's too much effort?

And the other thing is that it's silk. The model in the photo is wearing a dress that was pressed/steamed before wearing. I can guarantee that she's not sat down in it for any length of time, because the front would be totally creased.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 26/03/2023 18:23

Beautiful dress, but I wouldn't wear it to a wedding. Sorry

snygghygge · 26/03/2023 18:26

Are you going to an Italian wedding in Italy? Or expats? As an Italian I would find that dress inappropriate. It is way too revealing. Italians usually favour more conservative elegance

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 26/03/2023 18:26

I wouldn’t wear it because as a PP says the Italians I know haven’t worn this type of dress to a wedding, even an evening one.

Also, your tan, underwear, bra, figure etc would have to be spot on, Italians notice this. And I’d worry about creasing etc.

I’d be really worried the husbands would be eyeing me up and their wives would be eyeing me viciously!

WimbleOfWombledon · 26/03/2023 17:41

I went to an early evening wedding at an Italian villa and garden in July. It was a zillion degrees with no air con or breeze at all, I have never been so hot in my life!!

That silk will be covered in sweat patches before you know it. I'd choose a different material.

Also, at the 2 Italian weddings I've been to (Italian couples) people were dressed stylishly but conservatively - so no cleavage, not much flesh on show, no minis etc. That dress would have been completely out of place and inappropriate at both.

I wonder if we were at the same wedding Grin I've not felt cold all winter because I just think back to Italy and come over in an immediate hot flush GrinGrin

Agree about the Italians being much more conservative, the guests at the one we went to were half Italian and half British and there was a marked difference in style.

Bearpawk · 26/03/2023 18:30

I think it's beautiful and fitting for a chic Italian wedding, although I'd get terrible sweat patches in that.

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 26/03/2023 18:30

I love it and I don't usually like green!

WimbyAce · 26/03/2023 18:35

Beautiful dress but I would get the floral design for the wedding.

MyriadOfTravels · 26/03/2023 18:35

Italy in July, assuming you won’t be in the alps etc.., chose something in cotton. Floaty (or at least not tight) to cope with heat.

Lanadelfrey · 26/03/2023 18:36

OP, mumsnet wedding guest rule número uno is that you must dress like a frump in some dated, floaty monstrosity lest you scandalise the entire wedding party by showing your bare shoulders (the horror!!).

The dress is beautiful and I’d definitely wear it to an evening wedding.

NancyPickford · 26/03/2023 18:37

It doesn't look like you could wear underwear with it. I agree with everyone else re creasing, silk creases like a bugger, let alone the sweat issue.
