Clock those shoulder pads.

I did clock the shoulders and wonder whether there'd been any debate about adding some military style fringing. 😂

But yes, she looks lovely in that colour and very, very elegant. There are some great pictures online of her and William enjoying a drink with the troops and families.

Also, I'd love to know more about Kate's hair products. Her hair remained sleek and smooth even after standing in driving rain - mine would have been a frizzy mess. I use various frizz-reduction products but none of them would have withstood those conditions. What is her secret?

Good question! We've seen her hair at it's most natural when they did the Pacific islands tour and it did get frizzy so maybe she gets keratin blow dries these days? But is that even a thing anymore? I remember having a couple in the early 10s but they were all the rage then.

ChicoryDip · 17/03/2023 15:55

Just seen this on Twitter:

The buttons on Kate’s coat match the pattern of buttons on the other uniforms.

4 buttons then a gap, then 4 more buttons. Different Guards Divisions regiments group their buttons in different numbers. This is done to make it easier to tell regiments apart.

Grenadier- Single
Coldstream - Pairs
Scots - Threes
Irish - Fours
Welsh - Fives

Anti static dryer sheets pushed through brush bristles I read somewhere

Kate is flawless but the outfit still too Head Stewardess with Aer Lingus, for my liking. Would prefer coat as a jacket from waist up as think the structure and shoulder pads really suits Kate. Hair and makeup beaut! I thought I remember hearing Philip Kingsley (is it?!) products.

frugalkitty · 17/03/2023 17:57

I think Kate wore that outfit especially for us today.....she was thinking, they can stick their obsession with my green coats in their pipe and smoke it, I'll show 'em 😂

If you enlarge the pic of the POW before she’s presented with the shamrocks you can see what looks like a small stitch in the fabric of the coat just where the shamrocks will go. I’ve always wondered how brooches, regalia etc. are attached to all those beautiful expensive fabrics without causing any damage. Still not sure how it works though. Is it stitching or something else? Angela Kelly would be able to tell us. Shame she isn’t on here. 😀

I think I remember this - possibly from a programme about Queen Mary.
The dresses/coats etc are lined with buckram to stiffen and support the garment at the point where the brooches/jewels are attached so they don't "droop".

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:14

Queen Mary was always so extremely corseted that I can't imagine even the heaviest jewel having the slightest chance of drooping!

SqueakyDinosaur · 17/03/2023 18:15

I reckon she could have pinned St Edward's Crown to her jacket and it would just have stuck there looking like an extra fancy lamp bracket.

😁I really like what she was wearing, except for the hat which was a bit too frilly I think.

I think you're right 😀
I also agree with @SenecaFallsRedux that the hat was a bit frilly for the occasion.
A bit weddingy ( well Irish wedding weddingy )

frugalkitty · 17/03/2023 18:52

I really like this coat, especially the fluted cuff shown in this pic. @SenecaFallsRedux I half agree about the hat but I kind of like the fact that it's a bit different so I'm on the fence. But the coat....fab. Good choice Kate!
According to the DM the colour was to match the plume of the regiment hats. Or, headwear, I'm not sure it's the correct word.

Oh, I love that!!
I love the frills on the hat, and the shoulder details, it’s a good job we don’t all like the same. If I was quibbling - and it’s a tiny one- I’d say the shoulder pads were a tiny bit too big. I would have also stuck with diamond earrings not emeralds.
But I do love it , it’s a beautiful fit, colour, everything. There’s no room for a custard cream in it though is there?? I’d be stuffed.

MotherofPearl · 17/03/2023 19:12

Princess Anne at Cheltenham today. I love her navy suit with the red accents, and she looks amazing with red lipstick and her jaunty hat with its horse pin. But I'm afraid it's a hard no from me to those boots. I think polished chestnut brown knee length boots would have worked much better (and I'd ditch the black bag too).

I really like the hat! But I can’t cope with red buttons or the boots.

Maireas · 17/03/2023 19:18

Love Anne's hat, that's really stylish.
I agree about the boots, though.

I absolutely LOVE today's ensemble, I think she looks fabulous ☘️ I'm guessing it's McQ... those shoulder darts look familiar! And I will forgive the fact that it is 109% Aer Lingus hostess green😆

I think I read that it's bespoke Catherine Walker.

Kate's outfit is stunning. Still don't understand the coat dress. What do you wear underneath it?

Well back in the day a nice girl wore a liberty bodice 😂

How lovely to be able to crouch like that and not have a roll of fat anywhere. 😂

AdaColeman · 17/03/2023 20:06

I really like Kate's Saint Patrick's Day ensemble, she looks so good in those deep jewel colours, and it's such a change from her usual green!
l love all the little details, the flared buttoned cuff, the shoulder pads, the shoulder darts, the neckline, the covered buttons!
I especially love the hat, with its twisted pleated plume, surely influenced by the military plumes on dress uniforms.

In the photo where she's sitting down it looks like a matching skirt/dress/slip underneath. Or maybe it's a special coat dress lining thingy?
