I'll start... Sloane Ranger girl hair...

And a neural accent with expansive vocabulary!

Sorry I have nothing witty to say 😂

But I think of someone as wealthy who drives a SUV BMW, Audi, Jag, Range Rover or Volvo, ASWELL as having a detached 4+ bed house, who wears decent clothes and appears confident! Also with 2/3 kids who do sports!

(I say as well because anyone can get a car on finance and live in a one bed flat)

Explodingatomickittens · 26/01/2023 17:28

Can picture the type! Perfect posture, hubby with a big job in the city, sloane style!

Slim, healthy looking, toned, time to exercise and money to spend time choosing best suiting clothes and outfits. An air of relaxed confidence, no panicking or nervousness. Looks up and over people's heads, with a slight self satisfied smile. Time to spare and nothing to hurry for. Odd but just what I've observed

MaverickGooseGoose · 26/01/2023 18:13

As before, mud, couple of labs / retrievers, knackered old Land Rover.

Blossomtoes · 26/01/2023 18:36

You wouldn’t even think about it with the wealthiest person I know. It would never cross your mind that she wasn’t a normal mother middle-aged woman.

Blossomtoes · 26/01/2023 18:37

That stupid “mother” crept in while I wasn’t looking.

Thesystemonlydreamsintotaldarkness · 26/01/2023 18:37

I have no idea. I don’t really know anyone really wealthy. And from appearances it could all just be fur coats and nae knickers

postwarbulge · 26/01/2023 18:41

Barbour jackets and green wellingtons.

Reugny · 26/01/2023 18:46

Eras ago when I worked in retail in a department store I use to look at someone's shoes.

Expensive understated shoes that were easy to walk around in meant if they asked a question about buying something then it was worth it helping them out properly. (And I wasn't on commission.)

Mrcpy · 26/01/2023 18:47

It’s more about how you speak, your education level, interests, etc.
Clothes don’t say a lot about a person.
Good teeth.

Wealthy? Accent is more of a class than wealth indicator, in my opinion. But people will definitely make that assumption. Convoluted way of agreeing, in a way.

I would add expensive looking clothing, understated or the extreme opposite.

palygold · 26/01/2023 18:53

I think this is class indicator rather than wealth. Though people will hear a neutral accent, and of your private school education and interest in the arts and decide you must also be wealthy. I suppose it's often the case, but certainly not always.

Annabel073 · 26/01/2023 19:45

A serene glow that suggests no stress or worry.

You should have been treating all customers with the same diligence Hmm.

I can think of plenty of very wealthy people who had a very limited education

I think you are confusing 'class' and wealth

Well that’s how I interpreted the thread. I don’t think the OP wanted tips on how to appear rich but trashy.

Did you never see the Queen Mothers teeth?

Lots of the upper classes have terrible teeth - they’re far too busy out riding, shooting and doing other country pursuits to bother with cosmetic dentistry!

Mushroo · 26/01/2023 20:04

Before we get all the usual ‘battered Barbour and dog hair’ which may well be how actual wealthy people dress, to LOOK wealthy I’d say:

  • natural looking beautifully cut hair that swishes
  • a bag that is appropriate for the situation.
  • Being able to afford the exact right outfit for the situation, rather than having to make do. So being able to afford sweaty Betty gym gear for yoga, but also having a beautiful wool coat for going out for dinner. for a country walk the Dubarry boots and Barbour jacket might make an appearance. on holiday, having multiple beautiful dresses in linen and silk that are designed for the heat, rather than having to shove in a load of random outfits that have been bought because you could get away with them in the UK as well as at a beach resort.
  • an understated engagement ring.
  • nice teeth
  • a scarf that is oversized
  • speaking in an assured way, particularly not speaking too quickly as though you’re a bother.
QOFE · 26/01/2023 20:06

I'm a poor person (been on benefits since having my first child nearly 20 years ago, now a single parent carer to my youngest child who get disability benefits).

But I sound like a posh rich person, and I swear that makes a difference when I deal with government agencies and departments.

I don't know what a "poor person" looks like and would love to be enlightened so I can measure myself against this standard.

Xrays · 26/01/2023 20:07

Barely noticeable make up.
Swishy hair that’s subtly coloured
Smart glasses that suit their face
Expensive looking scarf wrapped round their neck
Neat, plain but manicured nails

I should add this is nothing like me. I’m almost the exact opposite 😆

Xrays · 26/01/2023 20:07

I agree that having a “posh” accent makes a difference. I’ve always been told I sound posh. 🤷‍♀️

palygold · 26/01/2023 20:13

Agree about teeth @Yeahrightthen

barbrahunter · 26/01/2023 20:16

It's also the quality of the incidental things they own, eg a mont blanc pen, a lovely thick natural cotton handkerchief, a supple leather coin purse, etc etc

It is interesting. Your class background will have influenced your accent?

You're treated better/differently by govt departments who have deemed you to be middle class? Or they take you more seriously? As presumably they know you're not wealthy (sorry if that sounds rude, I wouldn't call myself wealthy either).
