I'll start... Sloane Ranger girl hair...

This has been done to death and usually everyone settles on being slim as being the ultimate deciding factor of looking wealthy, which seems silly to me but hey ho

KILM · 26/01/2023 20:30

Around here its:
Good teeth - straight and attractive but not 'tv' white and no obvious veneers
Lovely long thick hair - doesn't need to be shiny, they all have the same good hairline, thickness, length and wave/slight curl. Natural hair colours only. Often a mid creamy blonde or a Kate Middleton brown. Never any fringes, maybe a tiny little wispy fringe on the 16- 25 bracket.
Bloody lovely skin, and just a sniff of mascara or a lipstick. No eyeliner and seemingly no blush but they must do. Its just genetically good skin and maybe a dermatologist appointment as a teen who told them exactly what to use.
Tan but not TAN.
A perfect, signature necklace that they wear constantly and never take off - looks old but well maintained. A subtle diamond, or an old ring on a perfect matched chain etc. Always their mums or grannies.
Skinny (sorry) - some women creeping into size 12s as they get to 50.
Nearly always in gym leggings - sometimes wear gilet's, but a lot of slightly unusual expensive looking ankle length coats.
We are an 'old money' town so 'new money' is instantly recognisable.
I am from 'no money' 😆

I can promise you no-one on Westbourne Grove is driving a battered landrover, wearing a tatty aged Barbour and covered in dog hair.

peaceandpotato · 26/01/2023 20:32

They normally smell nice but never in an overpowering way

Funny. I have a friend who lives on that road. (well, one of several houses around Europe that he owns). Works in tech. He does have a fancy car and nice clothes etc and a very expensive taste in art and restaurants.

But when hanging out he often wears the scruffiest clothes imaginable (old jeans, battered trainers, hoody). Someone once tried to offer him money when he was sat on a bench waiting to meet a friend Grin

MintJulia · 26/01/2023 20:38

unflappable confidence,
well cut hair
nicely kept but not bling nails
clean, well cut clothes in quality fabrics
lean physique, good posture

SunsetStrip · 26/01/2023 20:45

Enunciation. You can have any accent but you must be clear and without too much local slang. Swearing is OK though.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/01/2023 20:45

What MintJulia said with a softly toned well spoken voice and discreet but good rings and watch.

Also agree about the shoes.

Patanat · 26/01/2023 20:57

Before we get all the usual ‘battered Barbour and dog hair’

It’s too late for that! There were already several land rover and dog hair references by the time this was posted.

Always makes me wonder if the upper classes are the only ones with such completely uniform tastes? Or do the posters wedded to this idea of ‘old money’ also insist on stereotypes for middle and working class people?

LoraPiano · 26/01/2023 21:32

This again. Why do you need to look rich if you are not?

Shouldbesleeping8 · 26/01/2023 21:41

I agree that cars aren't a sign of wealth anymore. I know some people who fork out huge amounts every month that they can't afford for their status cars. It's mad.

Signs of wealth to me are people who have a membership to a health club, have a beautiful house with fantastic, curated interiors, own their own cars (one is old and possibly also an electric), have a preferred architect and, crucially, pretend they care by throwing charity dinners or charity auctions.

DuchessOfDisco · 26/01/2023 21:43

i think it’s the way you hold yourself - being confident and self assured.
that and pronouncing your T’s

AdoraBell · 26/01/2023 21:45

Either the muddy wellies and Labrador or simple camel or navy sweater, simple well fitted skirt with flat shoes and well behaved hair, not my bloody frizzy mop.

YourWinter · 26/01/2023 21:46

There’s a world of difference between wealthy and classy. No amount of money can buy class, nor grace.

LadyKenya · 26/01/2023 19:52

You should have been treating all customers with the same diligence Hmm.

The ones wearing high heels would wave me away when I approached them and the ones wearing cheap flat shoes would run away.

The job was boring without customer interaction so I tried to help everyone to make the day go faster.

If I was working with younger colleagues they were happy to do no work, while the older one was always trying to sort out and find stock in the mess of a stock room to fulfill customers orders or put on display.

You get more of moncler coats, large sunglasses, Chanel handbags. Faces that are too frozen from botox, skin clear from blemishes but a faint contoured eyebrows against dark brunette hair. Also with posh dogs on leads sitting outside by the bakery's that sell groceries.

RosesAndHellebores · 26/01/2023 22:33

I'm not sure a wealthy look can be bought. It's in the nuance of even the person doesn't have pots of money.

It's the speech, the gaze, the line of the jaw, an inner confidence, posture, health, etc. Someone can look like a million dollars without having a million dollars; similarly someone with a million dollars can look cheap. It's about the comfort of being at home at the Hurlingham Club or the English Speaking Union rather than swanning into the grossly expensive hotel in sight of the London Eye.

Compare and contrast a quiet, dignified watch with a leather strap with a blingy Rolex. Compare and contrast a Chanel or Louis Vuitton bag with logos and a simple, beautifully made one from Asprey. A well kept, well nourished, middle aged face with laughter lines with a trout pout and eyebrows.

SweetSakura · 26/01/2023 23:21

Yet both those people would be wealthy @RosesAndHellebores . You are just placing value judgements on different ways to spend the wealth (and seem to assume traditional UMC lifestyles are somehow inherently "better" than a more arriviste lifestyle. Yet they aren't. Let's value the person not the bank balance or the lifestyle. )

SweetSakura · 26/01/2023 23:23

(and I say that as someone who grew up in an UMC family /world, but valued the richness of my adult life where I pick and choose my friends from all walks of life)

ironingboredrefusal · 26/01/2023 23:27

Shopping with a trolley not a basket because they know they'll be able to fill it and chucking stuff in said trolley without looking at that bit below the price that says how much it is per inch, or yard or whatever measurements have been oked this week. To be fair, anyone who goes around shops without continuously adding up each item added to their basket and checking they've got enough money in their purse, pocket, or wallet is wealthy.

these kinds of threads are always very disapproving of the nouveaus and a bit fawning of the aristos.

White and beige Loro Piana knitwear like Naomi Watts in the The Watcher:) How did she keep it clean in that big old rundown house?

RandomPerson42 · 27/01/2023 00:38

Wealthiest man I ever knew you would not know he was wealthy unless you knew the businesses he owned - when middle-aged he was still spending the money his grandfather had made, hadn’t started on what his father or he himself had made.

Wealthiest unrelated woman I’ve ever known you would think she had some wealth as she had some class but you would not guess her net worth based on her house and car.

Met a multi-millionaire (a Lord) last year that drove around in a 10 year old vw. You would know his class when speaking to him.

Often if someone “appears” wealthy they are not.

Explodingatomickittens · 27/01/2023 07:33

Yes it's weird isn't it. When objectively one type of wealth isn't any better than the other.
