I'll start... Sloane Ranger girl hair...

No matter what they wear or sound like, it's always about the teeth. Not shockingly white Turkey teeth, but teeth that have had £££ spent on looking after them since they were children. And the confident but not arrogant smiles that show them off. At least that's the case with the SMT in my Civil Service department.

Shopping with a trolley not a basket because they know they'll be able to fill it and chucking stuff in said trolley without looking at that bit below the price that says how much it is per inch, or yard or whatever measurements have been oked this week. To be fair, anyone who goes around shops without continuously adding up each item added to their basket and checking they've got enough money in their purse, pocket, or wallet is wealthy.

I would more take into consideration what is actually in the trolly than the fact someone is filling it - which I don't think is entirely accurate either btw.

I see loads of lower class obviously low income people filling up their trollies, but they're often filling it up with crap food.

I would actually assume someone is more wealthy if they are using a basket filled with a few good quality meats / cheeses, etc and some fresh produce. This would also indicate to me that they eat healthy, but quality not quantity and have the time and money to come back to the shop every couple of days to do the same thing again.

I don't think there's certain things that look rich, but I've noticed that there's different principles between people I know who are comfortably affluent Vs people who want to be seen to have money.

Nice car that suits their lifestyle and season of life Vs status car, usually on PCP that's upgraded every couple of years

Obviously good quality handbags that are probably expensive/designer but don't shout look at me Vs the latest it accessible designer bag that is heavily monogrammed /designed to show the label prominently

Dressing in natural fabrics Vs a lot of synthetic fabrics

Dressing in more versatile pieces that are good quality Vs having a style that changes with the trends

Barely there make up / a full face of make up designed to look like they're not wearing much Vs prominent make up

Untanned or lightly tanned skin Vs heavy fake tan

Whatever their preferred sense of style is tends to be mixed with good quality basics, rather than being driven by the trends and fast fashion.

You can't tell if someone is wealthy just by looking. Clothes/shoes/car/manners etc are not indicators of wealth.

RosetteNebula · 27/01/2023 09:54

I always find these threads so entertaining. I agree with the people saying what makes someone seem wealthy is a certain confidence. My boss is extremely rich and has expensive designer clothes but also buys things from charity shops. She definitely possesses that confident air and even when she's made a mistake you somehow end up feeling like the idiot lol.

Eras ago when I worked in retail in a department store I use to look at someone's shoes.

Expensive understated shoes that were easy to walk around in meant if they asked a question about buying something then it was worth it helping them out properly. (And I wasn't on commission.)

That’s quite funny. DH always wears Vans when not at work, and wears them until they are getting quite scruffy.

At work he’ll wear £600 a pair Oxfords.

I wonder how many shop assistants have decided not to “help him out properly” because of this.

beguilingeyes · 27/01/2023 10:02

I went to a Simpsons event in a theatre a few years ago. All of the women who'd come over from the senior production team looked like another species. Grooming taken to another level. They looked glossy

WandaWonder · 27/01/2023 10:04

Not caring what other people think, meant in a good way

MrsMikeDrop · 27/01/2023 10:10

Can't help but think with true wealthy people you can't tell. But otherwise diamond shoes 😆

This. If anything the obvious ones are trying to prove something

Shopper727 · 27/01/2023 10:19

Why do you want to look rich? Surely that would take money and time so you’d need to be rich to afford it? I don’t understand it
my mum is v wealthy but you’d never guess that. I think the way you carry yourself and how you behave towards people is more important than looking like you can afford fancy bags etc each to their own I guess

LizziesTwin · 27/01/2023 10:19

Regarding old vs new money, I was surprised when someone who sounds quite stuffy mocked someone as having inherited his house rather than earned it himself. I was quite surprised but on reflection agree - the person who has clearly earned their own fortune is far more impressive & may they enjoy spending their money how they wish. The more they spend the more VAT.

a scarf that is oversized

🤨

I would love to look rich, I don't even know where to start...

Genuine question, but why?

QuertyGirl · 27/01/2023 10:27

I know it's shallow, but I have to make an effort not to assume that people with huge SUV's in urban areas are a bit dim. Or at least quite short-termist and hedonistic in their POV.

Sure there are some who bought them for good reasons.

What a strange way to think.

We generally use the little electric car around town, but sometimes need to use the Range Rover. Why would that possibly imply that we are “a bit dim”?

QuertyGirl · 27/01/2023 10:47

@ImmigrantAlice

Most people do not need an SUV in an urban area.

You may have a genuine reason like a disability, as per the rest of my post.

WFHbore2023 · 27/01/2023 10:55

A clear cut sign that someone is wealthy for me - putting pick n mix in a bag and paying as per weight, rather than a pre priced cup.

If I see someone walking around with a bag of pick n mix, I'm thinking they are minted.

A bag of m&ms from the m&m shop and I'm considering making the move to their chosen career.

🤣

I think this thread really needs a definition of what people consider wealthy lol.

I wouldn't consider anyone who purchases a bag of M&M's (or anything for that matter!) from the M&M store wealthy. I'd just consider them to be plain stupid for paying such a ridiculous price for crappy quality bad tasting chocolate and tacky tat.

DaVariance · 27/01/2023 11:17

Swishy hair, confident, funny and generous in spirit, the right clothes for the right occasion, well spoken and interesting

These are the qualities I like in a wealthy person

Some can be snotty if it's family money but they also tend to be the less intelligent ones so haven't been to Uni and mixed much they've just married well but not really lived a proper life

Apologies @SortingOutStuff, I hadn't realised my input had to be serious.

And most people don’t have one.

Making assumptions about the intelligence of those who do seems hardly to be a mark of a great intellect either.

I assume you only use an electric car yourself?

QuertyGirl · 27/01/2023 11:22

@ImmigrantAlice

Why do you have one?

QuertyGirl · 27/01/2023 11:23

(And electric SUV's are just as objectionable)

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/01/2023 11:23

Most folk that drive large suv’s lease them, have a large mortgage and live from month to month. You cannot tell a wealthy person by how they dress. Some dress well, others look like tramps. I can categorically say some of the most dressed up people i see are some of the poorest!
