I always find it fascinating on these threads that, in a country as diverse as the UK (and especially in a city as diverse as London) so many of the assumptions imply looking wealthy= white (and specifically Anglo Saxon).

I didn’t think this thread was so bad for this? Usually yes but here it’s only a couple of comments about tanned and blonde swishy hair. Certainly over the last few pages it’s been bitching about SUVs in the main.

TodayInahurry · 29/01/2023 07:58

The richest person I have encountered, looks very ordinary, drives an ordinary car, but owns multiple properties here and abroad and has a private jet and security. You would not know they are a multi billionaire. There are many people who try to look wealthy, expensive lease car, property with huge mortgage, etc but actually are not

You are right actually. Not as bad as usual. Perhaps Mumsnet is getting more inclusive in its knee jerk value judgements 😆

I don’t think there’s any way of distinguishing wealthy people from the ‘doing just fine’ brigade. Apart from the obvious ( I’m reasonably certain, for example, that MIL’s neighbours in St John’s Wood are all wealthy, although the ageing rockstar, Iraqi banker and Brazilian billionaire’s widow are all lacking in ‘swishy hair).

Although it’s always fun to discover someone banks with people you’ve never heard of. BIL who has lots of money and time on his hands often has a lunch meeting with his bankers ( I think it’s Hoare). This is a social event I never knew existed. We have a great friend ( a doctor in London from a very wealthy Chinese family) who banks with Jade, they give out very cool looking credit cards. I think you’d know he was wealthy if he paid for your pint on his contactless.

One example would be Joseph.

Nah, sorry, Joseph is very middle of the road.

You mean Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana,The Row. Now they are understated luxury.

Absolutely, spot on. My observations and experience exactly.

On what planet is a brand that sells coats with an average price of c£900 'middle of the road'?

@QOFE I think you make a good point. It's much easier to deal with government departments and institutions when you're well spoken, confident and articulate. In answer to your question, someone looks "poor" to me when they have badly dyed hair (obvious box dye, especially that awful purpley red colour), ill fitting clothes (especially bra on show), bad and missing teeth and scraggly hair. Then there are signs of lower class such as big sharpie eye brows, many visible tattoos, heavy and obviously fake eye lashes, tracksuits (as opposed to gym wear).

Totally agree

Did you never see the Queen Mothers teeth?

Lots of the upper classes have terrible teeth - they’re far too busy out riding, shooting and doing other country pursuits to bother with cosmetic dentistry!

That’s not true at all. Generally wealthy people have decent teeth - not dancing with the stars bling teeth but good.

The QM was born in 1900. She is not a reliable indicator of class indicators in the 2020s.

Depends on what level of wealth you are talking about.
most top end coats are over £900, certainly in my experience they have been.

A lot of what you are all describing to me screams kept woman - whether by daddy or husband. The wealthy women i know (that work for their own money) rarely look like that and whilst carefully dressed hardly ever look like arm candy, unless their actual job calls for it.

I agree with this!

The two school mums I know with the huge SUV's and immaculate make up etc, don't work.

Conversely, our school also attracts a significant academic/professional crowd. Mostly stressed and scruffy!

I agree. Modern cosmetic dentistry has become really popular in recent years. It’s quite unusual for someone to have money / wealth and not get their teeth fixed.

That's my experience but replace multi billionaire with highly suspect they have multiple millions.

Starting prices for houses where they lived were 1-1.5 million and there's an absence of very look at me wealth in that area to a non-wealthy person like me, but I've no doubt that a lot of the seemingly simple items are probably very high quality and more expensive than anything I'd be able to afford.

Some of the early career teachers I've worked with recently are some of the most label conscious/monogrammed bag loving/ status car on PCP that I've met lately. It always made me laugh when they said I was so 'lucky' to have a mortgage and house. Naturally I bit my tongue and refrained from saying it's a question of priorities.
