I had to Google SUV. My car knowledge is terrible, but I knew what they were as soon as I saw them. They are ugly aren't they? They were listed as a lower class marker on another thread! I didn't know they were expensive.

I know of someone who has one just for the school run (housewife) it's black with tinted windows.

That’s right, the car the queen drove is absolutely a marker of being lower class…

It's also the quality of the incidental things they own, eg a mont blanc pen, a lovely thick natural cotton handkerchief, a supple leather coin purse, etc etc

Crikey it feels as though we've gone back in time.

I'm adding energy to the list.. Wealthy folk always appear to be energetic & "busy"..

Yes because us normals just saunter about the place 😄

Oh really? I didn't know that. @WednesdaysNameIsFullOfWoe Well, they're sometimes called middle class, that I recall, but never lower. Interesting.

Drives me potty ( oh dear, no pun intended). 1 or 2 kids and big status car to drive 10 minutes to school and back. In London. My kids’ primary school was full of this.

Iunderstandit · 27/01/2023 20:09

@lieselotte im so glad I don’t live where you live!

WeAreBorg · 27/01/2023 21:35

Ill have to back @QuertyGirl up here sorry.
Unless you live in the arse end of nowhere it’s a no to a Range Rover.

I’ll let you off if you’re in town but your car is splattered in mud, smells of dog and you don’t know where anything is because you’re clearly not from there.

Then don’t buy one.

Calphurnia88 · 28/01/2023 07:45

Not sure why @QuertyGirl is getting such a hard time here... Range Rovers/SUVs are really bad for the environment, no? So if you don't need one (i.e. you live in a city and/or only take short trips in mostly urban areas) then you're being a bit short-sighted and, dare I say, selfish

Prepares to get torn a new one

Agreed, this sounds like a description of how the wealthy manor house owner enjoys the finer things in an Agatha Christie novel I love Agatha Christie novels.

chococherrychoochoo · 28/01/2023 09:54

It's a funny one with teeth. There are wealthy people (old money) with horrid looking teeth. Could be down to dental phobia or being too busy and confident to care. Then there are Turkey Teeth and glam veneers type of 'wealth'.
Catherine has done her teeth but she always had that glam look with her hair and smoky eye make up.

You can be rich from any class. I think the classes choose to spend their money differently. Some people live very frugally despite being minted and others have new money but their style is so gaudy. Hair and nails that cost a fortune but look tacky.

My idea of good teeth is the ones that were fortunate enough to have had access to a good ortho when they were 13 and 14. They have clean, unstained, unchipped, healthy straight looking teeth that haven't needed veneers or crowns. They tend to be people with decent bone structure as well, smiles that show 10+ teeth.

palygold · 28/01/2023 13:51

Though sorry to derail with SUV talk again. You can buy them for a few thousand pounds, as well as the top end of the range. I suppose it's the top end we're talking about but I wouldn't know the difference. I only know the worth of one person's car (over 100k!) and that's because they said so, but that's quite a showy looking, sleek sports car.

I should probably stay out of car talk as I'm out of my depth!

Yes it's weird isn't it. When objectively one type of wealth isn't any better than the other.

Hmm not quite accurate. Since the nouveaus desperately try to buy their way into the aristo world. But, whilst they may be tolerated (for their wealth can be useful to the aristos), they are never truly accepted. Also, the nouveaus can lose their wealth, but the aristos will never lose their aristocracy.

You're talking about social class though, not wealth (not that I agree with your statement, this isn't Downton Abbey).

That's not the point I am making though. People may "think" that one sort of wealth is better than the other, but objectively they simply aren't. Not least because lots of aristocratic wealth is still founded on money from the slave trade.

If someone has worked hard for they money and applied a talent or skill to earn it, then that deserves a degree of respect (although others may have worked just as hard if not harder but not had the lucky breaks). But inherited wealth is no different from a lottery win. It's pure circumstance. It doesn't make that person "better" than someone with nothing.

Indacathouse · 28/01/2023 17:47

Do you have kids? That’s the worst thing for the environment.

we have Range Rover in the middle of nowhere but I have an electric car plus we don’t have kids so I think we’re actually more environmentally moral than you

100% agree with you. I was posseting as to a possible explanation around why some people think that one sort of wealth is better than another. ie nouveau desperately emulating aristo, because they believe aristo is better than them.

What even are these brands of expensive yet understated and discrete clothes?!

LolaSmiles · 28/01/2023 22:36

Cheeseballer
I saw something a while ago about this.
It was on something about which lines in designer stores are aimed at different shoppers.
The jist seemed to be that, for example, Gucci will have a line of products that are expensive but within reach of your average person, and those items will tend to be the items that scream "look at my Gucci bag".Gucci would also have lots of other lines with beautiful fabrics and tailoring and basics in expensive fabrics that doesn't draw attention to it's designer status. These items are just excellent quality clothes.
Then there's other companies that make high end basics that are out of reach to most people, so they'll sell unmonogrammed garments and the people who have enough money to spend on very expensive, simple clothing, have enough money that they don't need the Louis Vuitton stamp everywhere to prove they have money.

Ok, but do you think this makes the people with the ancestors who were better at conquesting superior humans?

I always find it fascinating on these threads that, in a country as diverse as the UK (and especially in a city as diverse as London) so many of the assumptions imply looking wealthy= white (and specifically Anglo Saxon).
