Large SUV's have more blind spots, are harder to see round, harder to filter past, take up more parking space and are more likely to kill in an accident.

You are being utterly ridiculous now.

I get it, you are resentful of people with more money than your, and so are inventing reasons why they are bad people, but pretending that a Range a Rover has larger blind spots than a Ferrari just makes you look ignorant.

ImmigrantAlice · 27/01/2023 13:28

You probably get really upset about those of us with more than one home too, don’t you?

QuertyGirl · 27/01/2023 13:29

I get upset about people being killed for no reason other than vanity.

You’d have to be quite thick to assume other people are basing their car choice on no other reason than vanity, though.

Barbour jackets and green wellingtons.

Not really not anymore

QuertyGirl · 27/01/2023 13:35

I'm sorry that facts get in the way of your opinion.

SUVs are dangerous. That is a proven fact.

Buying one without a very, good reason demonstrated your mentality.

It's like getting plastic grass, dropping litter, smoking round children, same way of 'thinking'

But I do have a very good reason.

You are coming across as unhinged at this point, I’ll leave you to your frothing.

If you had an argument I think you'd use it.

The only thing that justifies massive cars is disability really.

Everything else is vanity and I judge it quite confidently

You don't think that the space inside a bigger vehicle is maybe a factor? Space needed for hobby equipment etc?

Most folk that drive large suv’s lease them, have a large mortgage and live from month to month. You cannot tell a wealthy person by how they dress. Some dress well, others look like tramps. I can categorically say some of the most dressed up people i see are some of the poorest!

Gotta love posters who state things like 'most people...' as if they have a clue 🤣

You really have a very limited understanding of what people might need vehicles for if you think the only need for a big car is disability.

Really???
Again another person making assumptions about others, there is certainly a big proportion of individuals around where i am that earn plenty, but spend plenty, and i certainly dont call those people who have large amounts of debt, whether they earn alot or not, wealthy. often it is those who try to project wealth that have the most to prove.
Many people with wealth are comfortable enough with themselves that they dont go around wondering whether or not they look or dress a certain way, because they dont give a crap.

We lease a RR, better for us to leave capital working for us and pay out of income. We also live in London - it sits on the drive all week as we walk or take the tube to work and school. We use it for weekends and holidays, DP climbs which needs kit, we drive up to the Lakes several times a year. It’s got plenty of space inside for the children and plenty of space for the equipment we take. It’s about comfort not vanity.
As to what makes a person look wealthy, I find its attitude and the expectation of getting what they ask for. Of course I realise this doesn’t mean that they are wealthy, it simply makes them appear so to me.

A family friend owns outright 2 large, listed houses in Bath. The family home sits on it's own large estate in Wales. Her brother recently married a member of European royalty. Yet to look at her you'd never know, she wears a lot of Zara and H&M and drives a shabby people carrier because she has 5 children. She speaks very well though because she went to public school.

lieselotte · 27/01/2023 18:45

I was thinking about this thread this morning looking around at the ladies at my outdoor fitness class. None of us had swishy hair. So clearly none of us are wealthy :)

Anyone can "look" wealthy, posture, confidence, sensible and modest clothing, and nice jewellery indeed - a knowledge of the best charity shops can take you a long way.

I think that she’s not really able to think much beyond her prejudices.

As I wrote above, we use a little electric city car for most of our trips. If someone ignorant on here though wants to make a foolish assumption about my other choices that’s fine.

lieselotte · 27/01/2023 18:49

I didn't realise until I was reading a Times article last weekend how much you're paying for a SUV each month. Ouch.

Where I live, people totally judge others on the car they drive - if it's expensive they are worth cultivating as friends. If it's not, not so much.

Most people that drive any “luxury” car leases them nowadays. It’s not for us, but I suppose I can understand why many people do this.

I’m from France, where it’s very different. It’s the “done thing” to drive a rattly old Citroên, but to have incredibly expensive art and furniture in the home.

It’s my husband here who likes his cars and motorbikes, so there’s a steady procession of bizarre and extreme machines passing through.

The right clothes for the situation. I’m thinking particularly of outdoor clothing.

This!! The SUV arguments aside - this is a real marker of wealth that’s been there for a lot of your life, knowing what to wear and being confident to wear the appropriate clothes, not over dress.

(the SUV argument goes into this too - in my experience wealthy people buy the car that they need. So if they live up a country track or regularly go to the countryside in locations that don’t have great roads, they’ll have a SUV.)
