I'm almost 40 years old, are these earrings too young for me? I always wear pearls and I would like to wear something different.

Naff and very over priced. I bet there's about £25 of silver to make them there

Have a look at EBay. Great for Tiffany jewellery as long as all the paperwork is there

Much less than that. The silver spot price yesterday was 61p per gram. I’d be surprised if there were even 10g of silver in those earrings; they are very small. So, less than £6 for the silver.

The Tiffany business was bought by LVMH a couple of years ago. Its owner, Bernard Arnault, was the world’s richest man last time I looked. He made his money buying prestige brands and applying those to accessible but still very expensive stuff, where people are willing to pay huge amounts for something quite cheap to make (bags, perfume, scarves, sunglasses, jewellery) because of the branding. Sound familiar?

The earrings are £240 - hardly 'very expensive'.

SweetSakura · 28/01/2023 10:24

@Annabel073 the point is that they are cheap to make with a very substantial markup because of the perceived "luxury" of the brand.

I can buy beautiful silver studs for a fraction of that cost from independent jewelers

Many people don't care about that. If I want to buy jewellery from Tiffany, Cartier, VC&A, etc, I'm not in the least concerned about that. Life is for enjoying.

Anonmousse · 28/01/2023 10:48

Silver costs, as a raw material, less than £1/g and they are massed produced so £240 is "very expensive" for a pair of off the peg silver earrings. (But I realise that the brand is important to lots of people)

Life is for enjoying How is a pair of non Tiffany earrings any less enjoyable? In fact you could buy a different pair of silver earrings for £25 and have £215 change to enjoy!

Having a particular item is what's important to some people - regardless of the brand/cost/cost of production, etc - this is what brings the enjoyment.

@Iamthewombat Ah, it didn't take long for the insults to start. Thank you for not disappointing me. 😂

Quite honestly, I couldn't care less what a stranger on the internet says about me. It's all so boringly predictable.

But everything we buy could be cheaper and better quality from independent artisans. Bags, clothes .. if some people wants to spend their money in a branded item, why to mock them?

At least I don't spend my money in booze or ready meals or shit sugary food like most of the British people at my work.

I spend my money in something I can sell later or give to my child when she will be a teenager.

chococherrychoochoo · 28/01/2023 13:41

I think you are too old to wear them because you should know better. They are a bit silly and something a teenager would wear like the daft slogan t shirts and baseball hats.

chococherrychoochoo · 28/01/2023 13:44

I'm sorry, I just saw that you bought them. Please ignore my comment above!
I'm sure some of what I wear looks very silly to someone on MN!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/01/2023 13:51

I don't care about brands but I wear a Superdy coat , Converse Hi-Tops and Kipling bags because I like them and they are leather and feather free .

But aside from the price/brand , the earrings are too big for my lobes , I'd feel a bit like an ear tagged old dairy cow .

The circle ones on the same page are nicer (but £350)

If my 20yo wanted them I'd consider , she is careful with her jewellery but I wouldn't have paid that much as a young teen .

Really naff. Spend your money on something classier at Tiffany.

My friend has a ‘return to Tiffany’ necklace. It just looks like some awful tag she forgot to remove.

SweetSakura · 28/01/2023 15:04

It's the nadir of capitalism really isn't it. No longer just parting money for a "thing" we don't really need but parting with money for a mere smoke and mirrors illusion of luxury. A triumph of brand over substance.

Annabel073 · 28/01/2023 15:12

@Iamthewombat

There's no 'fury' whatsoever and the repeated personal attacks are becoming somewhat ridiculous. I don't even own any Tiffany silver jewellery so why would I be 'furious'?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 28/01/2023 20:53

They aren't my cup of tea but I'm bemused at the comments about them being for children/teens, they are £240! That is not jewelry for teens prices.
