Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

I’m still really, really angry about Prescriptives. 😡

I think HR did the spit and brush mascara. It was either them or Lizzie Arden.

Before my time but my Mum often reminisces about it and it is Helena Rubenstein.

Does anyone remember Madeleine Mono Arabian Lights? Brightly coloured, sparkly eye shadows I wore for nights out when I was young, carefree and firm of eyelid. I think it was late 1970s or maybe 1980s.

And even longer ago, Yardley Sea Jade perfume... oh I loved it so. And Jontue perfume by Revlon when I was going through my romantic Laura Ashley phase.

Sea Jade was fab. They brought back "Jade" a couple of years ago (I have a stash, it smells like Cristalle by Chanel but costs a fiver) but have also discontinued that. I'm not sure it was the same as the original Sea Jade but I think so.

Kiku was Fabergé. I had the perfume (probably eau de toilette) in the stubby yellow bottle, and talc in a big yellow ball.

We were beside ourselves, high on our perceived glamour, bunking off school to get the train to London and using the testers in Biba to paint our nails dark green, black etc.

My dad would buy mum the Kiku talc every birthday, she had a stash of them in her wardrobe but didn’t like to tell him to stop!

Oooh so many memories.
As PP, Ultima II was amazing. They did this gorgeous concealer called Lighten Up Tighten Up and it was amaazing. Would love it now with my 50 year old eyes - it was wasted on my youth 😃

Also Kiss and Make Up from Miss Selfridge.

Does anyone remember Agnes B? It was a catalogue along with some other French brands and I was obsessed. They did banana loose powder which was a fantastic dupe for T leClerc.

And Prescriptives - most clever system ever. Colour match (I was YO!) and they would tell you which blush/lipstick/eyeshadow to wear. Ahead of the game - 30 years before Trinny.

I also loved some brands from QVC - Arianne Poole had gorgeous palettes and Stacie with YBF was really fun.

Does anyone remember Aqua Manda Orange scented bath oil?

Yes! And Apple Blossom perfume by Helena Rubinstein.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 16/01/2023 18:29

Tabu by Dana perfume, very strong and dark brown liquid as was Youth Dew by Estèe Lauder.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 16/01/2023 18:30

Talking of apples (fresh green ones) the shampoo with the spherical lid. Everyone smelt of it.

Also Silkience, shampoo and conditioner (wow, this was new)

Not that old but Barbara Daly at Tesco was great

Oh I had a Barbara Daly eyeshadow palette and it had a wonderful green shade. I've never found anything as nice in the last 15ish years!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 16/01/2023 14:59

And Helena Rubinstein.

I think they were the first to do a cleaning oil. I've been a fan of cleansing oils ever since.

Loved the mascara

TragicMuse · 16/01/2023 18:37

Aqua Manda has been brought back. It's pretty close to the original - not exactly the same but near enough for the memory.

I love the Agnes B nail varnish @JMAngel1 and still have some, though god knows how usable they'd be now!

I have one of my first lipsticks and eye liners. And a Quant dual eyeshadow pencil - called a Cocktail Stick. It is bomb-proof, nothing shifts that stuff!

JMAngel1 · 16/01/2023 18:46

Oh gosh if we're talking shampoos, remember Salon Selectives? I can hear the advert now 😂

user1497787065 · 16/01/2023 19:02

I loved Charles of the Ritz.

Jewelanemone · 16/01/2023 19:05

Twilight Teaser lipstick by Boots 17. Made you look like you had a heart condition.

I loved Miss Selfridge's Kiss and Make Up - I had a cerise lipstick which, in hindsight, was a terrible shade for me but I thought i looked fabulous. I seem to remember the different shades had cool names. Think I had a navy blue eyeshadow too.

Happy days 🙂

JinglingSpringishBells · 16/01/2023 19:08

I've just remembered another of my fave perfumes.

FIDGI

around 1979-80

I loved it but this really hot bloke I dated at the time hated it and said it was an old lady perfume.

Hey ho!

Still available in North America (and sometimes here at Savers)

MrsEmmaKnightly · 16/01/2023 19:16

I so miss Prescriptives! Can’t understand why it went. Perfect foundation (also a Y/O here) and I loved the liquid powder.

DiscoStusMoonboots · 16/01/2023 18:04

I loved the limited edition range Rimmel did - RU. Their tagline was something like 'rU up 4 it?' and the colours and scents were wild. They did a kiwi-scented nail varnish that I was mad about.

Yes I remember this as I worked for Superdrug at the time. It was the first time I think they had an exclusive brand back in the days when it was seen as a cheap drug store.
I liked Oil of Ulay (later Olay) make up.

I still have an eyeshadow compact my mum gave me that is Mary Quant!

VanillaImpulse · 16/01/2023 19:26

Anyone remember Once shampoo? It had two layers - I remember a yellow and green one. I used to love going supermarket shopping with my mum and shaking them, mixing them all up!

Craftycorvid · 16/01/2023 19:27

Woe and thrice woe for Cornsilk! Never found a better powder. I also recall Miners (and being 16 in Woolworths earnestly sifting through the eyeshadows). Also Constance Carroll - cheap as chips but did lots of eyeshadow palettes.

MorrisZapp · 16/01/2023 19:28

Woolworths had an own brand of makeup in the 80s, think it was called Evette.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/01/2023 19:36

Perfume wise I was definitely on Charlie and Stevie B , outdoor girl and miners on the make up-
