Those old make up brands that have gone- a bit of fun for the oldies.

I was thinking today how many old brands have gone.

I remember buying my first 'real' foundation in a dept store when I was about 15. The store was the House of Fraser group. I bought Yardley foundation and my Mum came along with me to look at the shades. It was in a turquoise tube, not unlike the packaging now of some Clinique products.

The others I used were
Outdoor Girl
Miners
Mary Quant ( a real treat as it was expensive.)

Me and my friends used to spend ages on Saturdays in Woolies looking at Outdoor Girl and Miners.

I used to love a tiny pot of Miners lip gloss.

I remember Kiku, Babe and Xanadu. Were they by Fabregé?

Loved Goya, Black Rose and Gardenia I think?

Anyone remember Morny Meadowsweet?

Kiku perfume- yay!

I wonder who made it?

I also used Charlie. Remember how I sprayed loads on before my driving test! Must have worked as I passed .

Aqua Manda was made by Coty, and does anyone remember Miners Face Shine?

French Almond perfume.

TollgateDebs · 16/01/2023 17:18

My Aunt bought me a 'Norman Hartnell in Love' gift set, from Woolworths. Pink plastic heart of perfume. Oriflame, although was only through home parties that you could buy it and Pretty Peach, the children's range from Avon.

Lovemydaxie · 16/01/2023 17:26

Panstick foundation, think it was Max Factor.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 16/01/2023 17:26

Almay
Helena Rubinstein
Miners
and more recently
Ruby and Millie (twist up cheek gloss)
Bloom (best nude lipstick shades going)

What was the lip gloss in a glass bottle with a roller ball?

Constance Carol!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 16/01/2023 17:30

I remember Kiku and Xanadu perfumes. And lip potion. Miss Selfridge make up, and Creme Puff solid foundation/powder stuff.

Coniferhedge · 16/01/2023 17:37

@joaniegirl I remember Beauty Without Cruelty! My favourite was a lipstick called Foxglove Fever.

I know it’s still around, but Avon Arabian Glow was a favourite of my Mum’s and I liked Iced Champink lipstick.

Also, more recently but a range I miss - Dainty Doll by Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud. It was a range of make up for very pale skin tones. Perfect for a ghost like me.

Take a look at Catrice, Irish so colours run extremely pale.

Kiku was Fabergé. I had the perfume (probably eau de toilette) in the stubby yellow bottle, and talc in a big yellow ball.

We were beside ourselves, high on our perceived glamour, bunking off school to get the train to London and using the testers in Biba to paint our nails dark green, black etc.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 16/01/2023 17:49

Nobody else ever seems to remember this but there was an earlier Charlotte Tilbury make-up range in Boots, well before the one she now has, at a much more modest price point with an aisle display - more like on a level with Bourjois and similar brands.

Anyone here remember that? Late 1990s I think. It was all organised by skin tone in a basic way as a kind of USP. I remember browsing it in the big Boots in town and reading some of the press. It kind of fizzled out pretty quickly and then a few years later she launched her current range.

@AdventFridgeOfShame yes Ruby and Millie! I used their foundation. Better range of shades than a lot of brands at that time.

TroysMammy · 16/01/2023 17:49

My first bit of make up was a dark blue Miners eyeliner. I must have used too much of it because when I blew my nose I had navy blue streaked snot 😂

Anyone remember Morny Meadowsweet?

I collect vintage perfumes, soaps and talc and have some Kiku and some Babe. Definitely Fabergé. I felt so grown up when I got a round Kiku talc one Christmas in the 70s.
I always bought my mum some Morny Sandalwood soaps at Christmas. Smelled fantastic.

Prescriptives. I miss their foundation.

I was also going to lament bourjois but they are back/coming back.

Prescriptives foundation was amazing

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/01/2023 17:54

I loved Miners. I remember splurging some Christmas money on a Mary Quant lipgloss that was like a pot of glue and tasted awful but it was one of my most treasured possessions! She also brought out a multi stick pencil that was basically a lip liner that you could use on eyes and cheeks. It made me look like I had conjunctivitis but I loved it so much Smile

KettleOn919 · 16/01/2023 17:54

Does anyone remember Madeleine Mono Arabian Lights? Brightly coloured, sparkly eye shadows I wore for nights out when I was young, carefree and firm of eyelid. I think it was late 1970s or maybe 1980s.

And even longer ago, Yardley Sea Jade perfume... oh I loved it so. And Jontue perfume by Revlon when I was going through my romantic Laura Ashley phase.

Not that old but Barbara Daly at Tesco was great

Yes it was, I loved the pressed powder and bronzer.

gelert5619 · 16/01/2023 13:27

Mary Quant was advertised as 'Make-up to Make Love In' which I thought was very racy at the time!
I used Miners and Outdoor Girl and always had 'Quickies' in my handbag to wipe it off before I got home and Mum saw.

Yes the modern version would be 'Foundation to fuck in' XD

Hesanuttercunt · 16/01/2023 18:00

When I was a teen we loved the Miss Selfridge makeup range, so many colours compared to the grown up make up! I got my first Black lippy from there.

EyesOnThePies · 16/01/2023 18:00

What was the nail varnish that was in a little spherical bottle? I had thought Mary Quant but pics suggest otherwise.

And the other that was round but had flat front and back? (A disc)

evilharpy · 16/01/2023 18:01

Spectacular and Hard Candy nail varnish in the 90s. The latter had a little plastic ring round the lid. They were amazing and everyone in my school wanted them.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 16/01/2023 18:03

I loved Biba. We had to travel up to Sydney to buy it, but my sister worked in the shop in London,(in charge of the props) so I felt very connected to it.
I was thinking about this this week, do you remember how popular green apple scent was in the 70s? I had a peel off mask, that never worked like I wanted it to, and every girl smelt like fake green apples. Then strawberries.
I used to get uk girls mags and pour over the makeup ads. I coveted the Miners Panda Eyes set, in blue, purple, yellow and green. I found a shop that sold it, but got upset when mum told me I looked like I was in various stages of having black eyes.

DiscoStusMoonboots · 16/01/2023 18:04

I loved the limited edition range Rimmel did - RU. Their tagline was something like 'rU up 4 it?' and the colours and scents were wild. They did a kiwi-scented nail varnish that I was mad about.

Yes it was, I loved the pressed powder and bronzer.

BD was a great collection and much missed when it disappeared

CoffeandTiaMaria · 16/01/2023 18:06

Definitely an oldie here!
My first lipstick was a frosted pink one from Miners, my first eyeshadow was Rimmel. I later had a Biba deep burgundy lipstick that I treasured for years.
