Help me find something nice please

Going out to a 'very nice' restaurant in a few weeks. People will be dressed up, I think. Not London.

So - I'm looking possibly for one of the following:

  • a dress / short but not clingy / must have sleeves
  • or - I've got a black satin midi skirt that I love but haven't really got a top to go with it / would need sleeves, lowish neck or possibly a wrap, relatively fitted, not very long in length and not needing to be tucked in, maybe a bit of ruching or something

or - a brilliant pair of flattering 'going out' jeans (I have no smart jeans) and a top to go with them

I suit black or dark colours like deep red or dark green / not averse to a bit of animal print or a subtle pattern.

I don't 'do' scratchy polyester. I'm short and a curvy 14.

Any ideas, please?

Thanks @MissingMoominMamma

I'll have a look at that site, although would prefer something I can try in store as sizing is so ridiculous everywhere.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I have sent you a DM. MN has now made this a ‘promoted by Mumsnet’ thread and as a small protest until they explain reasons (!) I no longer post links on them. Anyway nice Alice Temperley dress in John Lewis that I think may fit the brief.

Laquila · 15/01/2023 10:04

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie have you looked in Albaray? I sympathise - I love a satin/midi skirt + fine knit combo but I'm too hot just thinking about it. I'd hoped that restaurants/bars would all get a lot colder during the energy crisis for this very reason but unfortunately not.

Do you have chance to look in a Zara too, maybe? I never buy from them online but very occasionally I find something in person - mainly accessories though really.

I like your M&S animal print dress but bastard balloon sleeves drive me mad - I feel very self-conscious in a sleeve I can't easily roll up!

On a separate point I do like those knee-high boots shown with the pink and black Whistles dress, off to have a little look for those.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2023 10:26

@Flyinggeesei234 Thanks for the DM. I agree about the Promoted by MN thing. I don't understand the point of it, and if I'm scrolling through, I tend to avoid those threads because I assume they're advertising. So now I;'m assuming other people do the same and that such threads won't get traffic.

Can anyone at Mumsnet Towers explain, please?

Thanks @Laquila Normally I agree with you about sleeves, but for some reason the ones on the M&S dress don't feel too offensive for me. I may feel differently once the weather is a bit warmer. My ideal sleeve is three quarter or shove up-able.

Which pic were the boots on?

Forgot to say thanks for the Albary hint - I'll have a look. Never heard of them.

The lace Me and Em dress is absolutely stunning, classic and an investment buy <enabler>

Rina66 · 15/01/2023 12:47

🤣🤣🤣 @cathyandclare
Sold out in the bigger sizes now though, thought I'd treat myself yesterday as I'd been thinking about it all week and sold out in my size now so instead...
I've bought an oversized sequin shirt yesterday that's partially lined and I'm going to wear that to Ronnie Scott's in a few weeks, the offerings in most shops are very disappointing at the moment

Enjoy your sequins @Rina66
I bought a black sequin t-shirt last year and had a lot of fun with it!

Exactly Remus, sequins are not just for Christmas!

I’d wear a really nice linen/Cotten mix deep v neck black or charcoal t shirt with a black blazer with the sleeves pushed up and a chunky gold chain link necklace.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/01/2023 19:08

Thanks @Bunce1 I don't like blazers worn indoors (on me). Reminds me too much of work. Also, too warm.

This thread has been so dangerous! I just bought this, so pretty I hope it looks good when it arrives. I have absolutely no need for it but love it!

@Sunnycats
Sorry!

I did the same, I really like it on and am wearing it this weekend.

Sunnycats · 19/01/2023 15:06

@Montague22 I'm so glad you posted it! It's exactly the sort of thing that usually suits my shape so fingers crossed. I have a similar blazer to wear with it and can imagine it will look lovely for all sorts of things! You clearly have excellent taste 👌

Don't know how you'd feel about this sort, but throwing them out there!

TrianglePlayer · 31/01/2023 20:01

@Sunnycats how is the sizing? Big / small / about right? It’s lovely!

Sunnycats · 31/01/2023 20:19

@TrianglePlayer I found the sizing spot on - a little generous but not enough to make me size down. I'm a size 12, and it fits really nicely!

Thank you! I might have to buy it.

Stewball01 · 02/02/2023 00:28

I like the first black dress. Very smart. Everybody needs a lbd don't they? Not that I have any dresses. Only trousers. Not jeans. I don't think large ladies should wear jeans.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2023 07:07

I’d forgotten about this.

The Reiss dress is really nice.

Must admit that I find the comment about not wearing jeans ridiculous. I’m a size 14. Even if I was a size 24, I could wear jeans if I wanted to!

I ended up buying a black shortish dress with a gold print, from Fatface of all places. I like it and think I’ll be able to get a lot of wear out of it.

I’ve worn my Reiss dress twice now, think I’ll get a lot of wear from it.
Do you have a link to the dress you bought @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie ?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/02/2023 17:35

It’s this one, although I paid more for it. Won’t be to everyone’s taste but it met my criteria and I think it suits me. Will wear with high heeled ankle boots and black tights. here
