Night out in London's trendy Brixton - what to wear ?

Oh god. I am too old for this. I am going out for a friend's 40th and we are off to a 'sweaty techno' place in Brixton. I need something comfortable, impossibly trendy and preferably black to blend in with the bright young things () I will be mingling with. I have just bought some black combat type generic trousers which are actually great and fit my lardy arse well. It's a start. Where from here ? Tops ? Shoes/trainers ? Accessories ? Help !

Tyaca - oh, yes, Hallgerda's direction are much better to Hillsaide Gardens - not far from you at all.

There is a one-o-clock club in the park, too.

You can't see into the park from the road, just the gates, so it remains a bit of a hidden treasure!

CheesyQuaver, how was it?

I was in Brixton on Saturday night, but seeing Lust, Caution at the Ritzy.

Hello all.

Sorry - had a busy morning. Well I had a great night out after all the fretting about what to wear, how to get there, where to stay etc. I needn't have bothered worrying about anything as it was all very relaxed. In the end I didn't wear 'combats' but have kept them anyway as I will still wear them. Instead went for jeans, boots, and a black vest style top with another brown sporty hoody type thing over the top (sounds grim but looked fine). Lots of silver jewellry to finish off. The pub (White Horse) was great - not at all packed, very chilled and a mixture of all ages/types. Most people very casually dressed. Jamm was similar tbh (not at the old Junction pub as I thought, but down Brixton Road), lots of very dressed down people, and lots of older people obviously trying to recreate their younger years by getting caned and dancing to frankly dull music ! That includes me and my friends . I left at a respectable 2.30am and stayed at another friend's house so got a few hours kip before heading home.

Thanks for all your help gals, and phew what a mammoth thread !

blu - what is a one o clock club?

Hallgerda · 05/02/2008 08:59

tyaca, a one o'clock club is a place where you can take your pre-school children (some allow school-age outside school hours as well) and drink a cup of tea while they play. It's a bit like a mother and toddler group only in the afternoons and without a membership - anyone can go. There's no minimum age of child allowed but you can't drop and run.

They're a bit variable in quality and atmosphere - some have rather better toys and activities but are full of helicopter parents, others have rather tatty stuff and few planned activities but the children have a bit more chance to interact. Hillside used to be at the latter end of the range, Crystal Palace at the former, Brockwell Park a happy medium - my youngest is 8, so I'm not terribly up to date on preschool matters.

oldcheesyquaver, I'm glad to hear you had a good evening out
