Night out in London's trendy Brixton - what to wear ?

Oh god. I am too old for this. I am going out for a friend's 40th and we are off to a 'sweaty techno' place in Brixton. I need something comfortable, impossibly trendy and preferably black to blend in with the bright young things () I will be mingling with. I have just bought some black combat type generic trousers which are actually great and fit my lardy arse well. It's a start. Where from here ? Tops ? Shoes/trainers ? Accessories ? Help !

OMG people who feed pigeons make me so angry. i'm in flats just behind leigham ave (nr the blockbusters) and people here are always feeding the pigeons. i could rant for ages about the pigeons, in fact i just did, but deleted it 'cause i sounded a bit crazy. am making notes re the brixton bar and grill. we used to go to balham kitchen and bar til it closed down. now it's just a curry in tooting if we fancy a local bite. unless there's some SECRET place in streatham i never heard of ...??

hhhmmmm... peanut butter milkshake ... i am starving and no food in the flat while i wait for tescos to come round...

which one is hillside park??

Blu · 31/01/2008 14:43

Is the Chinese on Sunnyhill Rd, Batters?

Tyaca, Hillside Gardens park is a bit of a walk from where you are, - if you were to walk along the High Rd and turn into Cricklade Ave or Downton Ave and then just keep walking til you got to the end, the entrance to Hillside gardens would be facing you. It's a small park with a nice kids playground, several tennis courts, a growing number of pit-bull lookalikes wrangled by teenagers riling them up as a fashion accessory, and an old woman feeding a Hitchcock-filmsworth of pigeons!

tyaca, I'd go up Leigham Avenue to Leigham Court Road, cross over into Mount Nod Road, walk right along Mount Nod Road and down Hillside Passage, and the park's a short way along on your right.

I too can recommend the Wholemeal Cafe. DH tells me Purple's good.

janinlondon · 31/01/2008 15:34

Hallgerda - you cut through the estate next to F school???? Respect is due!!! You must be well 'ard, in't it?

hungs is the chinese on sunnyhill - i used to live six doors up from it.

Hallgerda · 31/01/2008 20:58

I remember when it was a creperie... but then I've been in Streatham long enough to remember Pratt's.

policywonk · 31/01/2008 21:07

Hey, is it time for another Brockwell Park meet-up soon? (I used to be Rowan1971...)

Do you remember the Pratts closure protest stickers, batters, with pictures of clothing of various decades, ending with nudity in the 1990s because there would be nowhere to buy clothes?

mandymac · 31/01/2008 22:05

Oh this thread is making me all nostalgic. I lived in Brixton for about 6 years until 1995. The Brixton bar and grill was the only nice/trendy bar in Brixton when I lived there.
Lived off loughborough rd and then up by Poets corner.

Hallgerda · 31/01/2008 22:17

policywonk, it's very soggy under foot in Brockwell Park at the moment, and a bit chilly too. Not ideal for an outdoor meet-up, unless you had a Greenham Common theme do in mind... Later on in the year it would be lovely though.

tyaca · 31/01/2008 23:48

creperie, surely not?? next you'll be telling me that the KFC was once a pattiserie?

Hallgerda · 01/02/2008 08:27

No, the big KFC used to be a clothes and bits-and-bobs shop with pretentions called "Screen" iirc.

Yes, and now the former McDonald's is a pound shop. (I used to tell anyone who asked me the way there that I didn't have a clue where it was, but perhaps they'd like to try the lovely veggie place in Shrubbery Road )

Blu · 01/02/2008 16:30

Penny drops! Policywonk!
I kept thinking 'ooh PW is a perky poster, is she new?'

LOL at this thread - starts out as clubbing in Brixton and ends as hairdressers and toilets in Streatham.

oldcheesyquaver · 01/02/2008 16:36

I will tie it up on Monday when I have had my night out and can report on how good/dreadful it was...and so the circle is closed...

Blu · 01/02/2008 16:59

no, no, this is becoming like a coal-scuttle thread, or whatever they call it! But will look forward to your report back, Qhuaver.

Apparantly The Dex, the new club above The Prince / KFC in the centre is the place to go for the best gigs and club nights in recent months!
