Night out in London's trendy Brixton - what to wear ?

Oh god. I am too old for this. I am going out for a friend's 40th and we are off to a 'sweaty techno' place in Brixton. I need something comfortable, impossibly trendy and preferably black to blend in with the bright young things () I will be mingling with. I have just bought some black combat type generic trousers which are actually great and fit my lardy arse well. It's a start. Where from here ? Tops ? Shoes/trainers ? Accessories ? Help !

Well nice to see all you South Londoners chatting ! fwiw I lived in Crystal Palace for around 10 years - hence the frequent trips to Brixton. Now live in darkest Sussex so this night out is going to be a bit of adventure for me now I'm a country bumpkin !

ooh, a local thread for local people!

Although I'm at t'other end of Coldharbour Lane from most of you, in sunny Camberwell.

I wonder how many MNers I've inadvertently mixed with in the Telegraph and the Dogstar in my thinner days?

talulasmum · 30/01/2008 12:51

The metal shoes are only the goths, the emos wear skinny jeans and converse style trainers, similar to the 'Indie' kids except they wear scarves and band t-shirts.

still drink in the funky monkey from time to time

lol at the bold squirrels - they're like furry versions of the aggressive beggars in front of the cashpoint opposite Nando's! Very Camberwell.

Hallgerda · 30/01/2008 13:03

I'm in Streatham Hill too - but can't advise on clubs or gyms. You may spot me in a scruffy blue coat in Brockwell Park, doing the Brixton section of the new bird atlas

Enjoy your do, oldcheesyquaver.

There was an urban myth bandied about - it even made the Guardian as a real news story - that Brixton squirrels were addicted to crack because of the amount they nibbled when coming across hidden stashes.

You could perhaps verify or discount this story as part of your bird observation, Hallgerda? Are you including the Parakeets?

Yeah - careful in Liggle, Batters is well rough when she's sampling the £1-99 Chablis after dropping her DD off at school.

The gym at the Lido is good. Lots of equipment, nice atmosphere, lots of classes, all included in the price. (I haven't dared attend a class yet, as I would be the huffing neon-pink beetroot in the back row). Swimming in the summer is included, too. It has a jaccuzzi thing (haven't been in that, either).

Go for it, BK - a nice stroll across the park, 45 mins in the gym, a coffee in HH and back across the park....bliss!

bossykate · 30/01/2008 13:35

i am taking a sabbatical for a few months - then back to the fray!

yes it will be great!

Hallgerda · 30/01/2008 13:39

I've observed grey squirrels on their home turf - believe it or not, the ones in Nashville make the London ones look shy and retiring. I think any timidity was bred out well before they got Over Here. I loved the crack story (especially the fact the Guardian fell for it). However, I'm not sure how one would distinguish between squirrel-on-crack and normal squirrel behaviour.

Yes, I am counting the parakeets - their numbers would seem to be increasing. Around the Lido and near the pond by the walled garden are particularly good places to look (or just stare up into the sky over Streatham Hill around dusk when you hear a noise like computer aliens being massacred).

talulasmum · 30/01/2008 13:46

i think the streatham common squirrels are probably the hardest in london.

bossykate · 30/01/2008 13:47

oh i love the parakeets! what else have you seen in the park, hallgerda?
