Night out in London's trendy Brixton - what to wear ?

Oh god. I am too old for this. I am going out for a friend's 40th and we are off to a 'sweaty techno' place in Brixton. I need something comfortable, impossibly trendy and preferably black to blend in with the bright young things () I will be mingling with. I have just bought some black combat type generic trousers which are actually great and fit my lardy arse well. It's a start. Where from here ? Tops ? Shoes/trainers ? Accessories ? Help !

can i join in. i'm camberwell.

i have to say the squirrels in brockwell park are the hardest in london. sorry.

oldcheesyquaver · 30/01/2008 13:54

Aha parakeets. There were a flock of them in Crystal Palace Park too - they used to fly over my flat and no-one would believe me when I told them they were there...

ocq....we get parakeets in our garden. their beautiful.

Hallgerda · 30/01/2008 14:02

30 species, mostly fairly common, have been found so far on my patch (of which Brockwell Park is the most promising part). 27 were spotted by me in my survey hours - someone else saw the other 3. The slightly more unusual ones were cormorant (in classic drying-out pose), shoveler and redwing. There were lots of starlings, feral pigeons, black-headed gulls and carrion crows, of course.

Hallgerda · 30/01/2008 14:06

As this is a style thread, this is what you should aim not to resemble the morning after, oldcheesyquaver.

Blu · 30/01/2008 14:08

I saw 3 herons on the pond in Brockwell Park one day!!

I have seen the parakeets flying around the park at Hornimann museum, too. I don't know if it is one lot putting themselves about, or several flocks?

Hallgerda · 30/01/2008 14:23

The flats which back on to Sydenham Hill Wood (not the very new ones, the older ones further up Cox's Walk) have parakeets visiting their bird feeders. They weren't seen in the wood at all until a couple of years ago, though they had been in Dulwich Park quite a while before that. So I suspect their numbers are increasing, and it's not just one flock setting a good example to all you gym folk I've seen more flying over Streatham Hill recently too.

Feathery green lycra is de rigueur for aerial aerobics

Sorry, can't quite get over being on a style thread.

Blu · 30/01/2008 14:31

LOL at hallgerda's style hints.

hey blu, batter and hallgerda

i have never ever seen a single bird in these parts that was not a dirty 'orrible feral pigeon. i'm not familiar with the rating system, but i'd assume they'd be at the hardest end of it?

oldcheesyquaver · 30/01/2008 16:18

lol at parakeets 'putting themselves about'.

Can't beleive how this thread has randomly developed

Yes, I watched my back garden. Nothing unusual showed up this year, not the woodpeckers, or the long tailed tits, or the goldcrests, or a fieldfare scoffing next door's rotten apples, or the blackcap I saw earlier in January - picked the wrong hour, alas...

I'm not too surprised about the doves in Brockwell Park. I take it they were collared doves? For some reason I haven't seen them in our immediate area but there are plenty around South London.

janmoomoo · 30/01/2008 20:48

Total nightmare for anyone over 30 who doesnt do clubbing anymore! I think wear something similar to what you would normally wear otherwise you will just feel out of place and like you are in "clubber" fancy dress!

Agree with anniemac, dont know why Brixton's got trendy reputation. Had trouble the last four times I went there.

tyaca · 30/01/2008 22:53

this is hijaking gone mad. just took a look at brockwell and looks fab.

i too am only four min from fitness first batters, but no way i'm signing up to any of this annual membership nonesense. you would walk the 40min? a bus trip surely, or am i very very lazy???

bossykate · 31/01/2008 10:26

hello all

btw someone mentioned below that brixton bar & grill was closed. it was closed by has since reopened without any visible difference!

the satay bar is great (although deffo needing a spruce up) the food there is v authentic.

do try the upstairs restaurant on the corner of acre land and branksome road if you haven't already - it's wonderful.

Batters - it wouldn't take 40 mins to walk to the Lido, would it? Anyway, I would give you a lift .

It suits me because it's handy for my route to and from work. I think gyms only work if you can get to them v easily. You, in any case, are a fitmess godess with all your walking - much better.

Tyaca, which side of the High Rd do you live? Hillside Park is infested with filthy horrible pigeons, and old ladies feeding them on mountains of white sliced. Pigeon shit everywhere.

Blu · 31/01/2008 10:56

And Brixton Bar and Grill is ve-e-e-ry nice.

Hallgerda · 31/01/2008 11:07

Blu, it takes me around 40 minutes to walk to the Lido, cutting across the estate next to school F and using the Brockwell Park Gardens entrance, so I think batters has estimated correctly. It would probably take you 30-35 minutes, as you are slightly closer.

batters, I think taking a bus along the High Road towards Brixton then walking up Water Lane and through the park would be your best public transport route to the Lido - but I'd prefer just to do the walk, look round the park then walk back. (The reason I'm not fit is the cafe in the middle of the park that I can't quite resist... but that's also a problem if you go to the gym.)
