Les Senteurs looks more approachable than, say, Creed from the websites?

MissBattleaxe · 24/01/2023 10:20

What is epdny? a typo - I was typing too fast and couldn't write spendy!

MissBattleaxe · 24/01/2023 10:21

Les Senteurs are quite friendly and will let you have a sample if you look like a serious buyer. Also, I haven't found a Creed I love but Les Senteurs have lots of different brands to choose from and loads of testers!

Cantonet · 24/01/2023 10:44

@Wheresmymojo Rose perfumes were my first love. I also grow Roses so I like perfumes that smell like real Roses.
The best ones for me are Malles Une Rose & La Fille de Berlin. Papillons Tobacco Rose is a great long lasting gender neutral Rose too.
I also really enjoy classic lipstick Roses like Ysl Paris EDP & Malles Lipstick Rose plus L' Artisan Parfumeurs Drole d Rose.
The latest reformulation of Guerlains Nahema is also brilliant. As is Marina Barcenillas the Perfume Garden.
Also Love Kills by Masque Milano is a stunning geranium rose scented with truffle. I veer between thinking it's lovely or it's too much!
In terms of recommendations Perfumer H would be a brilliant perfume shop to go to in London.
I'm in love with most of lyn Harris's creations.

wheresmymojo · 24/01/2023 10:46

Great. I haven't tried many of the brands that have their own stores (Creed, Penhaligons, etc) so many brands makes more sense for me.

POTD:

Tried Yardley Luxe Gardenia. White florals again which are my nemesis (came in a Perfume Society box). This smelt like furniture polish to me Blush

Then tried Yardley Decadent Mimosa. Not purchase worthy for me personally (though only £10 at the moment!) but a nice blend of mandarin, mimosa flowers and pear with the slightest musk/vanilla/sandalwood underneath. Definitely worth £10 for anyone looking for a spring green floral.

MissBattleaxe · 24/01/2023 10:53

Also Fortnum and Mason and Jovoy are both good perfume destinations.

MissBattleaxe · 24/01/2023 10:55

Jovoy has loads of brands and is a real treat to visit. I could have spent all day there.

AprilLady · 24/01/2023 12:17

@wheresmymojo your preferences sound quite similar to mine. I also avoid white florals (tuberose in particular) but love rose scents. You’ve already had some great recommendations (I’m with @Cantonet on FM Une Rose (now renamed Rose Tonnerre) and Papillon Tobacco Rose. One more to add to the mix would be Diptyque’s Eau Rose - a much longer lasting, slightly greener version of Paul Smith Rose.

Another spring/summer scent I really enjoy is Penhaligon’s Luna - has quite a zing to it, which appeals.

If you like your rose somewhat sweeter Zara’s Rose Gourmand is worth a try ( and cheap!), with Goutal’s Rose Pompon a more upmarket version.

In terms of places to test, Selfridges in Oxford street is also good and not too intimidating. As well as the individual brand perfume counters, they have a few counters set up near one of the entrances with loads of testers from loads of perfume houses. Very worth a visit.

Fittingly, seeing as it's the 25th, I ate my last mince pie today. I'm already looking forward to the next one. Really, really can't believe it's been four weeks since Christmas. ☃️

SOTD is Youth-Dew. ❄️

Eek! Obviously, I meant the last mince pie. I sincerely hope that wasn't my last mince pie. 🤞🙃

I'm still working my way through the open bottle of Baileys. Had a good slug in a hot chocolate earlier this week.

Need to step my game up before it goes off!

SOTD yesterday: Map of the Heart, Gold Heart. Spicy and woody...has a dash of milk according to Fragrantica.

I like it...but won't purchase full size as I don't love it as much as Grand Pirates Reserve.

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2023 07:58

Purchased three samples from Perfumista yesterday so excited for them to arrive...

Marly - Delina La Rosee
Atelier Des Ors - Lune Feline
Diptyque - Fleur de Peau

I added the last one in a rush being hassled by DH to turn my phone off for bedtime and already think I may have made an error looking at the notes again this morning.

Only purchased 2ml of each...just enough to decide whether to get a larger sample.

I find spring/summer tremendously difficult in terms of fragrance too, as the smell families I love just fit naturally with autumn/winter. ❄️☃️ Season-wise I love winter, autumn and spring the most - I don't really get on with summer at all.

I'm determined to find perfumes I'll love for s/s too, so I'm going to explore musks (which I don’t know very well) and uber powdery fragrances (which I love, love, LOVE but don't own many of) this year to rectify this. 😊

No SOTD as yet, off to fix this.

I just read back a few posts - which musks have you already tried and which are top on your list this year?

I think(?) I also love musks but I'm still working out notes being a newbie.

I'm keen to try the Narciso Rodriguez ones and have a bid on a few eBay samples at the moment 🤞🏻

MissBattleaxe · 26/01/2023 09:00

@wheresmymojo Musks are one of my favourite genres in perfume. I was addicted to The Body Shop White Musk in the 80s and 90s and haven't found anything as good as that classic. These days The Body Shop keeping messing with it and making flankers and the EDT is almost pointlessly short lived.

I recently got a travel size bottle of Naked Dance by Oddity. I hadn't heard of it before but I subscribe to Hoo Haa which sends you a 10ml niche fragrance every month for around £14 and I've found some real treasures this way. hoohaa.co.uk/ Anyway Naked Dance is a gorgeous musk and I've been wearing it loads. I won't buy a full bottle as it's too expensive but I'm very happy with my 10ml.

Here are some more:
Avon Soft Musk: Quite a floral retro musk but at £6 I'm not complaining.
Jovan Musk for Her and White Musk for Her
Alyssa Ashley Musk
Katy Perry's Indi
Kiehl's Musk- gorgeous but subtle.
Karen Timson Rosa de Rio - a rose musk that I love and had for Christmas.
Narciso Rodriguez Musc For Her
Al Rehab White Musk rollerball 6ml ( Amazon, under a fiver)

CorneliaStreet · 26/01/2023 12:03

SOTD J'Adore for a day in the office.

Cantonet · 26/01/2023 12:25

I really mourn the original Body Shop White Musk too @MissBattleaxe. It was the perfume of my student days. Though the current white musk EDT with pear smells wonderfully fresh on my 18 year old dd.
Musks are really personal I think.
The only one I enjoy at the moment is Mona di Orio Musc. It's a slightly sweet, angelic, powdery Musk and I can only wear it in cold weather. I would love to try the perfumer h musk too to see how the perfumers interpretation diggers.

Cantonet · 26/01/2023 12:26

Differs!
Sotd is vintage Apercu perfume.

peaceandpotato · 26/01/2023 13:18

SOTD Kilian - I don't need a Prince by my side to be a Princess. Hate the name but this is the one! Angels share can be for next fall

You're right it's very personal. I too loved the original white musk

Chevyimpala67 · 26/01/2023 14:05

Ah! Musk!
One of my favourites 😍
I still mourn my beloved avon nightmusk
I wear kayali musk atm
I loved NR musc but it made dh sneeze so I sold it on
Most of my perfumes have a musk base

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2023 16:38

SOTD: Firedance by Ruth Mastenbroek

Generally love warm and smokey scents but this is not great on me. Fragrantica is very marmite reviews...

I agree with these ones (pics below) Grin

First notes smell like licking yesterday's bonfire ashes from a limestone plinth mixed with something like...old fashioned shoe polish.

Apparently it has rose in...I'm hoping that comes through soon!

@wheresmymojo The only proper musk I've tried is Malle's Musc Ravaguer. It smelled like dirty nappies 🤢. That put me off musks for a while! I actually don't know many musk perfumes at all, it's a completely unexplored area for me, so I don't have a to-try list yet. I've been making copious notes from today's posts though! 😊

Having said all that, I think I'll probably like powdery musks the best, so intend to focus my search there initially. 😁

OP posts:
wheresmymojo · 26/01/2023 17:52

For the first time I've actually had to scrub a perfume off my skin...

Since it's a perfume that smells like licking a pub ashtray while standing near a recently cleaned urinal (you know that horribly heavy smelling cleaning stuff mixed with boy wee they use in grotty pubs?) it typically has massive projection and lasting power.

I thought I was going to be sick 🤢

wheresmymojo · 26/01/2023 17:53

And I can STILL smell it.

That one can get straight in the bin...

Chevyimpala67 · 26/01/2023 18:16

I rather like firedance but it's heady stuff!
I remember having to scrub off 4160tuesdays lady rose lion. Made me retch.
Sotd today has been vintage obsession ❤️
