What clothes items do you like but can't pull off wearing?

What are the items of clothing you'd like to wear but can't really pull off, or if you do, you need to make alterations to your look so it works.

For me - it's always been a crisp white shirt. Either it's too white or just too clean a look for me, I have worn it in the past.

I ordered this the other day because I think it'll look nice on me with the frills and is fairly versatile. First time ordering from Kitri.

I also got a lovely grass green pleather blazer and QED pleather black dress in my favourite local boutique. I'd tried the dress the other day but it was so humid and the blazer is just perfect (not with the dress). I'm not overly a fan of pleather but it really works with these items.

Most things don't suit or aren't cut for big boobs! 😪

DoingJustFine · 14/09/2022 10:33

Anything you tuck in :(

Same here. Also cropped stuff. Basically I'm slim but I have a massive gut - worse since I had a hysterectomy- and look awful in anything that shows my tummy.

soupmaker · 14/09/2022 09:58

Anything low rise

Anything with a waist or fitted

Anything tucked in

I'm your classic apple shape. Legs are good because I run but I've multiple spare tyres. Sigh.

You sound like me, slim legs and hips but lacking in waist. Horrific.

soupmaker · 14/09/2022 10:58

Yes, @TheFormidableMrsC. We're going to a wedding this weekend and trying to get something to wear has been a bloody nightmare. Ended up with a kaftan style dress. Sigh.

mondaytosunday · 14/09/2022 10:59

Sleeveless tops. My arms are too fat.

Pleasedontdothat · 14/09/2022 11:07

Hats - any kind of hat - caps, woolly, straw, fedoras, trilby- it doesn’t matter what style they all look unremittingly hideous on me

beachcitygirl · 14/09/2022 11:43

Sequin jackets. I imagine in my head a kate moss at her the beautiful & the dammed party but feel more like peggy butcher going to the bingo

SollaSollew · 14/09/2022 12:57

Thank you every one this thread has really brightened my day.

I have that Mango skirt @MimmiCooper in black and white and wear it with a black t-shirt tucked in at the front and a black blazer. It has to be exactly the right t-shirt (black v-neck and not too long otherwise what you've tucked shows through) and the blazer sleeves have to be pushed up otherwise it just doesn't work, it's a very demanding skirt.

I've always fancied a (p)leather dress and Zara seem to come up with new one every seasonish and I always try them on but every single time I've looked like a member of the Gestapo.

HandbagAtDawn · 14/09/2022 12:59

Maxi skirts. I see other women wearing them and they look great. I’ve bought so many over the years, telling myself each time that this will be the skirt that finally works, and every time I just end up looking like a frumpy, dumpy 18th century peasant.

TheLoupGarou · 14/09/2022 13:03

Anything high-necked, cropped, tucked in, high waisted. Shirts/shirt dresses.

I'm a bit fat now, but the above goes for when I was slim as well as I was always an hourglass shape.

GettingStuffed · 14/09/2022 13:14

Anything bias cut I'd look pregnant in them, and I'm far too old to have children

ladygindiva · 14/09/2022 13:16

Palazzo pants. I have broad hips,a huge bum and short legs. They just look hilarious.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/09/2022 13:59

Dungarees. I love them on to her people but I'm just too fat and booby, they never look right.

Rose coloured wedding dress. Didn't suit my complexion at all

BigSkies2022 · 14/09/2022 15:35

Just to say I am slightly gobsmacked at the love for dungarees. I had a pair in around 1983. The fact is sadly recorded in some photographs which my mother has insisted upon keeping on her kitchen walls. This regularly gives everyone a laugh, and I endure taunts of 'Andy Pandy', or 'ooh, it's a Minion!'.

Boiler suits, however, are awesome.

whoopsnomore · 14/09/2022 16:12

As a short-waisted hourglass, I can't do anything high waisted, can't tuck in! Also anything smocked or gathered around the bust is an instant disaster. Look like Hattie Jacques 😞

thetruthaboutlovecomesat3am · 14/09/2022 17:43

I can't wear trackie bottoms / joggers.

Not that I would wear them everyday but it makes these nice 'lounge sets' impossible.

I'm petit size 6-8 and have a short torso. So any joggers or PJs I have to roll up as they to to my tits and I end up with a huge camel toe.

My minge ends up looking like a behemoth coffee bean.

Newlifenewme · 14/09/2022 18:06

Shoulder pads or puff sleeves (wide shoulders)

mom jeans

halter necks (see above plus fat arms)

Any sandals which aren’t flip flops or have adjustable straps like Birkenstocks because of my insanely high instep. My feet just don’t fit in!

Most smart coats because of wide shoulders and I’m a bit over weight so I always look like a fat Rodney trotter in his brown coat

Lndnmummy · 14/09/2022 18:52

Blazers, they never look chic on me. Chest too big and I cant move my arms.

Tracksuits. I love them on others. But I look so frumpy😫

SeaThingChild · 14/09/2022 19:15

So many of the things recommended as 'classic essentials for a capsule wardrobe'' fail for me.

Trench coats/belted dresses: I don't have a waist and I'm really short so they always look like a dressing gown

White t-shirts: I have a short neck and a big stomach and just look awful in t-shirts and white is my worst colour.

jeans: as I'm short and pear shaped and they just never look right and my huge C-section shelf pushes the zip down and catches painfully on the buttons and waist,

maxi dresses: even petite ones are just too long and I look like a washer woman from the distant past, I also trip over them on the stairs.

Wrap dresses: make me look pregnant, enhance unexpected extra lumps and always too low cut.

Blazers, biker jackets, cargo jackets: my shoulders are weird, I'm too short and these just never suit me, I always look like a kid wearing their dads jacket.

tinyflies · 14/09/2022 19:20

I don't suit anything too fitted round the waist or anything that ties round the middle . I alway loves jeans, shirt tucked in with a nice belt- but it doesn't like me lol

I have good legs but unfortunately I never seem to have them shaved/tanned when there is a flicker of sun out

SnottyLottie · 14/09/2022 19:33

I’m a size 14 hour glass with a big bum and big boobs (32 FF).

anything that is boxy, baggy or loose fitting looks awful on me, especially around my middle (it makes me look a dress size bigger)

mini skirts - my big bum makes it ride up at the back and you can see my knickers

high collar/necklines (especially with sleeves) - just makes me look matronly. Strangely this doesn’t apply to turtle necks but I have to wear with caution as they really emphasise my big boobs

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 14/09/2022 19:38

As I'm not tall, have big boobs, a bloated belly and shoulders like a male swimmer there's not much that looks good. But since you asked, I definitely wouldn't wear anything sleeveless, no mini or shift dresses, shorts or jumpsuits. (I hate the word playsuit so they can go in the bin too - playsuits IMHO are for toddlers not grown women.)

Buttons294749 · 14/09/2022 20:00

Baggy clothes/palazzo pants. I'm petite framed so if i try something like a maxi dress i just look like a pile of washing 🤣

VickerishAllsort · 14/09/2022 20:36

Anything with a waist. Because I don't have one. It's like tying string around a football.

VickerishAllsort · 14/09/2022 20:37

Oh and anything with a high, or even just round neck. Because I don't have one of those either.
