What clothes items do you like but can't pull off wearing?

What are the items of clothing you'd like to wear but can't really pull off, or if you do, you need to make alterations to your look so it works.

For me - it's always been a crisp white shirt. Either it's too white or just too clean a look for me, I have worn it in the past.

I ordered this the other day because I think it'll look nice on me with the frills and is fairly versatile. First time ordering from Kitri.

I also got a lovely grass green pleather blazer and QED pleather black dress in my favourite local boutique. I'd tried the dress the other day but it was so humid and the blazer is just perfect (not with the dress). I'm not overly a fan of pleather but it really works with these items.

Biker jackets. Feel a right prick.

Sad It's a pain sometimes when you want to suit something but you just feel wrong in them. I suit them which is good I suppose.

However a friend of mine (who suits Joules dresses, a pale pink rain/day coat etc) doesn't suit them at all. She is larger (size 18?), I used to see someone her size rocking a leather biker jacket too on my old commute.

@LadyOfTheCanyon (are you a Joni Mitchell fan?) I love your husband's comment Grin. He's a keeper.

For me, it's anything drop waisted, or that doesn't go in at the waist. As a broad shouldered, child-bearing hipped hourglass, I look like a wall, or the back end of a bus.

I love Joni Mitchell! Oh to be able to channel her style circa 1967!

My husband is the best. I was running for the bus the other day and I heard him shout from behind me "Go go go little legs!"GrinGrin

LesOliviers · 13/09/2022 16:48

I can't wear anything tucked in - it's doesn't suit my proportions.
Midi skirts - they make me look dumpy (i'm not) and my legs look odd.
High neck tops - anything that's not a scoop or V neck makes my bust look huge and shoulders look broad.
Ankle strap shoes & ankle boots with skirts - due to an unfortunate cankle situation.

NigellaAwesome · 13/09/2022 16:55

I really really want to be able to wear long length gilets.

I've bought and returned so many, but they just look wrong on me. Lovely on other people though.

AuntieDolly · 13/09/2022 17:21

I really want to wear wide leg culottes, but I look like a square with tiny feet on the bottom

ScoobyDoNot · 13/09/2022 17:24

Straight leg jeans, rolled up slightly with DMs. Love the look, could never pull it off

MaryJoLisa · 13/09/2022 17:41

Cropped trousers. Fucking cankles.
Anything yellow or beige. I look alarmingly sallow.

TauCeti · 13/09/2022 17:49

Another one for dungarees. They make me look like a weeble.

MimmiCooper · 13/09/2022 18:00

Anything that hides my waist
The waist must be accentuated at all costs .

I also can't wear yellow, beige ,camel etc etc I look jaundiced

DelphiniumBlue · 13/09/2022 19:05

Can't wear anything high-necked, and not just because it looks dreadful on me, but it feels suffocating too. I can manage a woolly scarf on a cold day, but never a polo neck, which is a shame as looks so chic on other people.
Actually there's loads of things that don't suit me or feel uncomfortable ..puffed sleeves, batwing sleeves, anything waisted ( hoping that is temporary), anything tucked in. Can't wear heels anymore, or cheap wool (itchy) or polyester(sweaty). Hate the feel of things with no stretch or at all restrictive. Would never wear beige or camel or large patterns, and not keen on geometric or ikat patterns either. I never wear pastels.
I do like dark florals and paisley though, and am OK with animal prints. I am quite messy so dark colours and patterns can be practical - I very rarely wear white for that reason, although it can look good on me.
I don't like annoying bits hanging off clothes, such as frills, toggles, epaulettes, and drawstrings, and I particularly hate fake patchwork prints, or patterned/plain mixed together in one item, like the yoke of a shirt, or the collar or sleeves being different from the main body.

Yes, I often muse on how practical they must be, nothing to drape in puddles etc, but they look awful on me.

pilates · 13/09/2022 19:12

Shorts and skinny jeans.

legs are too chunky

Leafblow · 13/09/2022 19:14

Tight trousers with loose tops.
I am quite scrawny but with big boobs so the loose tops go all boxy- the tight trousers cling to my knobbly legs and I end up looking like a mix between Spongebob and Gru.

quirkychick · 13/09/2022 19:18

Tapered trousers, I am quite straight up and down with slim legs, but calf muscles, so they are usually too big on the hips and too tight across the calves.
Fairisle jumpers, just accentuate my shoulders, in a bad way.
Full on boho, it's just too feminine and fussy, I can do boho-lite, though.
Yellow, orange or beige, I'm too cool toned and I look awful.

ScarletWitchM · 13/09/2022 19:29

I love the look of wide leg trousers with a tucked in top but I have a very round tummy and it just makes me look even bigger. Also can’t wear anything with ruffles as I look like a clown 🤡

Speedweed · 13/09/2022 19:30

Paper bag waisted trousers. I want to feel like a sexy pirate, but the reality is more humpty dumpty.

Maxi dresses. I look like a hovercraft.

Ditto those fashionable tiered full dresses. I want feel all carefree and youthful, but it all goes a bit Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.

Jumpsuits. Love them, but they're always ALWAYS too short in the body so just ride up.

Dungarees. I own 3 pairs, but always look pregnant, even if I belt them.

Flyinggeesei234 · 13/09/2022 21:33

OP I’m confused and you need to elaborate! 😊

You say ‘yuck’ to frills but in OP mention and like to the frilliest flounciest blouse ever! Is this an example of one you do want to wear but it doesn’t suit?

I should say I love a frill, especially at the shoulder and it’s a common search term I use on clothing websites.

I only ask you to clarify as I wonder if you’re a secret frill lover like me. They can be tricky though.

As to what I wish I could wear and just can’t, any type of button up blouse or shirt. I just feel like it will get make up
on it within seconds and hold
myself tense when wearing. Or I just feel very matronly and busty, in a
way I don’t feel in other tops.

Parkmama · 13/09/2022 21:37

Wrap dresses that show all the lumps and bumps, I'd love to wear one to work but no!

Insertdeadcatsnamehere · 13/09/2022 21:40

Leggings. Disproportionately short legs, very long torso with c section shelf means they never stay up (or indeed even reach my hips in the first place), they just ping back under the shelf. I also apparently have massive camel toe which mysteriously appears if I even look at a pair. Felt very badly done to throughout lockdown.

Watchthesunrise · 13/09/2022 21:42

Drop-waisted anything.

WaitingRoomBoredom · 13/09/2022 21:46

Dungarees - they look fantastic on other people and I would love some but I look beyond ridiculous and I'm not even sure why.
Also I really wanted a classic beige trench ages ago but it's a colour that makes me look instantly ill

TheOGCCL · 13/09/2022 21:46

Vest tops (boobs too big, shoulders too broad)
Ditto halternecks
Ditto polo/roll necks
Ditto fitted shirts especially white and pale blue as they are not warm enough for my colouring
Knee length boots - virtually always too wide
Trenchcoats - I look absolutely awful

Confusedbannana · 13/09/2022 21:46

Fake leather trousers / leggings- why do they look good on other people but baggy around the knees and awful on me?!
Mom jeans - make me look massive
Floaty dresses - make me look like a sack of potatoes
Backless anything
Small halterneck bikinis
