What clothes items do you like but can't pull off wearing?

What are the items of clothing you'd like to wear but can't really pull off, or if you do, you need to make alterations to your look so it works.

For me - it's always been a crisp white shirt. Either it's too white or just too clean a look for me, I have worn it in the past.

I ordered this the other day because I think it'll look nice on me with the frills and is fairly versatile. First time ordering from Kitri.

I also got a lovely grass green pleather blazer and QED pleather black dress in my favourite local boutique. I'd tried the dress the other day but it was so humid and the blazer is just perfect (not with the dress). I'm not overly a fan of pleather but it really works with these items.

T shirts. Would love to wear a classic, effortless, chic t-shirt, but I have broad shoulders and chest while not being generous of nork, and if I don't wear something that tapers around my rib cage and waist, I look like a block of flats. I finally worked this out after years of people hugging me, and looking surprised that I was 'deceptively small'. Charming!

I like trousers, but struggle to get jeans right, so have given up. So have to forswear the jeans, casually buttoned and rolled sleeve white shirt look as well.

Leggings. Disproportionately short legs, very long torso with c section shelf means they never stay up (or indeed even reach my hips in the first place), they just ping back under the shelf. I also apparently have massive camel toe which mysteriously appears if I even look at a pair. Felt very badly done to throughout lockdown.

YY to the magical camel toe, even in trousers 2 sizes too big. It's like my fanny has an insatiable appetite for man made fibres.

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/09/2022 23:38

Dresses. I have never found a single one that is flattering or I'm comfortable in. I'd say my wedding dress was the only one. It's weird.

Disneydatknee88 · 13/09/2022 23:39

I have been wanting dungarees for ages but I tried some on recently and I just look like a toddler. Devastated 😭

MammaWeasel · 13/09/2022 23:48

I always wanted a duffel coat with toggles. Sadly they and I are never to become acquainted since I am overlarge and pear shaped and the duffel does absolutely nothing for me.

DustyGrapevine · 13/09/2022 23:54

I'm another one for the high waisted, wide leg jeans. I really want to keep
to keep up with with the jeans trend, but I'm stuck with skinnies. The wide legs look great in the models and I'd love to wear them, but the high waist emphasises my podgy belly and the wide legs hide the slimmest part of me. I look HUGE in them!

MuchTooTired · 13/09/2022 23:57

Jumpsuits and play suits, I look ridiculous. Too short and too fat. Bodycon dresses, as above. Tucked in tops, my mum tum pouch is more of a saggy weekend bag, and knee high boots are out as I have sturdy huge calves so they won’t do up!

Jeans or shorts with a baggy tshirt work for me, or loose fitting dresses. I feel great wearing these even if I’m hideously unfashionable!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 13/09/2022 16:21

This made me lol. I'm with you on that - I have Proletarian corned beef legs that can walk for miles without flagging, but are not by any stretch of the imagination, things of beauty. Asked my husband to describe them and after a very loaded pause he said "...sturdy".

My husband described me as "stocky", or "compact" . Neither of which I felt was very flattering!

In answer to the first question, I love fitted dresses esp 1950s style, but I'm fairly straight up and down. Small boobs, small hips and no waist.

Ineedwinenow · 14/09/2022 00:21

Dungarees, I look like anovergrown toddler and I’ve just spent .£110 on a black pair of Levi rib cage jeans and I look like Simon Cowell/my grandad and as I’ve taken the tags off I can’t return them 🤦‍♀️

I’m trying to get away from skinny’s but I am short with a huge arse so struggling! Wide leg
crops look ok I look ok with sandals /trainers but god awful when I add boots like the young fashionable youth of today would wear during winter!

I want to cry! I’m stuck in skinnies forever and they’re not even comfortable

OP I’m confused and you need to elaborate! 😊

You say ‘yuck’ to frills but in OP mention and like to the frilliest flounciest blouse ever! Is this an example of one you do want to wear but it doesn’t suit?

I should say I love a frill, especially at the shoulder and it’s a common search term I use on clothing websites.

I only ask you to clarify as I wonder if you’re a secret frill lover like me. They can be tricky though.

As to what I wish I could wear and just can’t, any type of button up blouse or shirt. I just feel like it will get make up
on it within seconds and hold
myself tense when wearing. Or I just feel very matronly and busty, in a
way I don’t feel in other tops.

Ha ha! I don't like frills in general - I'm sure I can pull them off. It's flounces and frills in general - Per Una used to do a lot of them?

That blouse - it reminds me of my 1980s Spandau Ballet youth and I think I need a white, frilly blouse in my life.

I also have 'workwear' and 'non-workwear' - so e.g. I have a few blouses (1 I got last year was a light powder/mid blue satin Mango one) but don't often wear them outside 'work'.

Things which look good on me (which I never thought would do):-

  • Co ord sets
  • Sweatshirts and t-shirts
  • leggings
  • trainers
  • casual type tops - so e.g. florals (which I love but sometimes feel I need to get away from)

Have seen lately this skirt which I like:-

shop.mango.com/gb/women/skirts-midi/printed-satin-skirt_37052884.html

But bought an orange/pink striped satin skirt (midi) this spring which doesn't suit me at all.

Have discovered I really suit green - bought an amazing midi green floral Mango dress sort of pleated/crinkled and a Mango green beaded choker - they're the perfect right shade of green for me. I did try to get a grass green blazer but didn't find the exact best one for me. I did buy a bright pink blazer though which I've worn quite a lot.

Part birthday gift from my mum the other week and worn it a lot, I quite like the fringe applique on this (if anyone's looking, size down, I got a S but prob could've gone XS):-

www.zara.com/uk/en/contrast-faux-suede-jacket-p03046334.html?v1=177677280&v2=2113434

This is lovely but £350, no will wait for sale, I like the embroidered detail:-

www.zara.com/uk/en/embroidered-coat---limited-edition-p04786203.html?v1=193047305

I'd love, love, love to be able to pull of the Narciso Rodriguez range but it's too floaty and sheer for me. My SIL (tall, slim, dark hair and eyes) would probably look great in it all.

The current ubiquitous white racerback tank. Bras are so difficult with them! Nude bras show as dirty looking straps at the side of the racerback, white bras show a deep V of cleavage through the fabric of the stupid things, and the cut away straps make my already broad shoulders look enormous. I have even bought a nude strapless bra to try with them but it looked ridiculous (was too big and cut to come really high on my chest and still showed through the fabric under the arms). I've actually bought 4 bras to try on with my white vest and they all look wrong in one way or another. Then I forgot to return the bras - expensive mistake.

SatinHeart · 14/09/2022 09:53

Ooh I thought of another one:

Brogues

Seen lots of lovely pairs worn by women at work. I have quite big feet and they honestly look like clown shoes on me

soupmaker · 14/09/2022 09:58

Anything low rise

Anything with a waist or fitted

Anything tucked in

I'm your classic apple shape. Legs are good because I run but I've multiple spare tyres. Sigh.

Mischance · 14/09/2022 09:58

Dungarees - love them but I literally cannot "pull them off" in time to have a wee!!

I'm sure I look terrible in dungarees, given that I am a size 16 with big boobs and big hips, but I still wear them. I wear black linen ankle grazer ones over a black and white striped t shirt and like to think I look like Bananarama, DH says I look like Billy and Johnny from Hale and Pace. Still don't care because they are so comfortable 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think they're meant to be worn without a bra. In that teenager from the 1970s burning their bra type of way. That's how I wore mine back in the 1990s anyway!

Floydthebarber · 14/09/2022 10:13

Frills. I can do soft, slightly flowing things but frills have never worked on me.

Structured blazers. I've tried a few and they look ridiculous. I need something longer line and softer.

Robinsonsquashedme · 14/09/2022 10:14

I'm personally not a fan of anything body-con on me.

I do like chunky jumpers. They do nothing for me, but they are comfortable and warm, so I wear then anyway.

I tend to suit clothes with a structured shape and dresses that go in at the waist and out at the hips. I dont suit shapeless clothes. The other thing I don't like is midi skirts/dresses. Knee length, short and maxi are all fine, but not bloody midi length!

SharpLily · 14/09/2022 10:18

High waisted flares - or anything high waisted. I have a very short torso so high waists come up around my ribs and sit just under my boobs like some kind of odd looking empire line trouser effort. For the same reason anything with a waist doesn't work because I don't have one, or anything tucked in. Low rise trousers are great for me as they sit on my actual waist.

On the other hand I can pull off the cropped flares or anything that's helped by long, slim legs.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/09/2022 10:19

If I did that I'd get arrested for indecency because you'd be able to see my nipples so clearly! Surely most women wouldn't be able to wear a white vest braless without very visible nipples? Either that or vests in the 90s were thicker and less see-through than the two I bought in the summer (despite being ribbed, which usually helps). I have compromised with a nude bra and a cardigan to hide the straps.

BigBessie · 14/09/2022 10:21

I look like a clown in converse.
I'd love to wear them and try now and then but always look like I have just got out of a small, comical car with a honky horn

NinHuguenAndTheHuguenNotes · 14/09/2022 10:21

I desperately wanted to wear a ra-ra skirt in the eighties. I was about 15 when I tried one on in a shop and still remember the look of 'just don't' on my sister's face when she saw it on me. I was very slim, but it looked all wrong on me.

Nowadays it's anything belted. I have a long torso and a newly acquired menopausal thick waist and end up looking like a string of very thick (good quality obv) sausages😃

I have also never been able to wear low rise jeans or tucked in tops (well not since I was in my twenties!) Too much overspill.

theoldhasgone · 14/09/2022 10:22

I can't wear anything floaty or wafty or flowing. I look awful in that sort of thing.

I also look like a waitress in a plain white shirt.
