What clothes items do you like but can't pull off wearing?

What are the items of clothing you'd like to wear but can't really pull off, or if you do, you need to make alterations to your look so it works.

For me - it's always been a crisp white shirt. Either it's too white or just too clean a look for me, I have worn it in the past.

I ordered this the other day because I think it'll look nice on me with the frills and is fairly versatile. First time ordering from Kitri.

I also got a lovely grass green pleather blazer and QED pleather black dress in my favourite local boutique. I'd tried the dress the other day but it was so humid and the blazer is just perfect (not with the dress). I'm not overly a fan of pleather but it really works with these items.

Anything that doesn’t allow for a bra. My boobs have always been too big and unruly not to require scaffolding.

Sleeveless things - upper arms always seemed too fat and misshapen for me to have any confidence in them. Also have keratosis pilaris, so even as a teen I hated having my upper arms on show. A mean girl once collared me in the changing rooms after PE and said “Eughhh, what’s that all over your arms”.

All that is changing, however - I’ve lost a huge amount of weight, barely have any boobs at all now, and I’m having a breast lift with internal bra in January. Also having a brachiaplasty at the same time so will have both nice boobs and arms for the first time ever in my adult life.

Dungarees and leather biker jackets

Long floaty skirts and oversized knitwear make me look like a ten year old boy who's raided his mother's wardrobe for a laugh, and if I try to wear a shawl I'm reminded of being a child and strutting around wrapped in a blanket pretending to be wearing regal robes. And bright jewel colours. I love to look at them, my house is decorated with them, but they fight me if I try to wear them.

Yes, @TheFormidableMrsC. We're going to a wedding this weekend and trying to get something to wear has been a bloody nightmare. Ended up with a kaftan style dress. Sigh.

That's another one I can't get away with. I can manage a floaty kaftan type top but not the dress things, I look horrific in them. I've also got a wedding and went for a bias cut skirt which is very flattering with a well cut blazer. It gives me some shape in the middle. So annoying. Poor us.

Belts. I was ok with the low slung ones in the early noughties, but I don’t have much of a waist so normal belts do nothing for me. I can only carry them off when I’m very slim (it’s been a while).

Orangello · 15/09/2022 09:56

I've complained about it before. Pleated skirts. How can other women look normal in them, but they make my quite regular backside resemble an average sized rhino's?

ProfessionalWeirdo · 15/09/2022 14:41

Skinny jeans. They make me look like a two-pin plug.

AllThatAndMore · 15/09/2022 14:58

High waisted jeans . I have a short torso and they just don’t look great on me . Plus I now have a mummy tummy and high wasted jeans give me a pouch under my gut. Low rise is a 100% no too because ya I have a mommy tummy 😆
I love mid rise jeans ! They look the best on me .

waterlego · 15/09/2022 15:03

Anything with lots of fabric that’s billowy and floaty like Maxi dresses. I feel like I just get a bit lost in it all 😂 I’m short and sturdy but lean; a rectangle shape really, and I tend to look best in styles that are more tight fitted.

BlibBlabBlob · 15/09/2022 15:24

There's very little I can 'pull off' but I don't give a fuck anymore so I wear my colourful, childish, baggy clothing - including dungarees 😁 - and just don't fret about it. Try it, it's very liberating!

Snailsaresweet · 15/09/2022 20:16

I really want to buy some barrel-legged jeans - they'd work well with the rest of my wardrobe. But I can't wear anything which goes straight down from your waistband, because I don't have much of a waist. As a result, anything that goes round said non-existent waist is pretty large and results in epic quantities of spare trouser.

Dungarees make me look like a builder/pissed off toddler, and most hats make me look like a twat.

I can't really wear pleated skirts, no matter how slim I am either. I'd like to be able to wear them but they just don't suit me.

For me, I've worn so much over the years and have had to resign myself to - it suits me or it doesn't.

I had 2 friends/colleagues who at one point in late 90s/2000s onwards used to wear merino/wool pastel v necks and black trousers to work and nothing else - like a uniform.

I only ever wore those sort of jumpers when it was a bit more trendy e.g. 80s Sloane Ranger time. I'm actually the sort (sort of dark blonde with highlights) which looks good in them, with fake or real pearls, diamonds etc so do sometimes wear them but I'm just mindful of how Sloaney I can tend to look so save it. It was my work or out of work uniform at one point when I was 18/19 though complete with an old navy or green Barbour jacket, the navy one wasn't warm so I had a separate faux fur gilet (Barbour) with it!

I recall at 18/19 wearing a white shirt with black pinafore and feeling very school-girlish in it. But I had a black skirt (sort of flared/pleated and long) which I loved and wore to work/out after work.

Such a good question!
A lot I’d say… but mostly, high waist skirts as I am an apple.

DubiousGoals · 16/09/2022 23:29

I'd love to waft about in a floaty maxi dress but I'm barely 5' tall so they make me look like a child dressing up.

Ratonastick · 17/09/2022 11:28

Wrap dresses. Everyone says they are perfect for big boobs and a bit of a tummy, but I just look terrible. I’m liked a sack of potatoes with a badly positioned belt and I can’t quite work out why. I think it’s because my waist is in the wrong place.

I once went into DVF in Mayfair with the determination of a woman with a credit card and a need to find her style. The saleswoman recognised her opportunity for a big day’s commission and couldn’t do enough to help. And even she stepped back and blanched a bit when I emerged from the fitting room in the first attempt. We agreed, with regret, that DVF was probably not for me and I don’t know which of us was more upset.

This made me lol. I'm with you on that - I have Proletarian corned beef legs that can walk for miles without flagging, but are not by any stretch of the imagination, things of beauty. Asked my husband to describe them and after a very loaded pause he said "...sturdy".

This made me smile. One of my best friends freely admits she 'has Estonian peasant legs'. And no, she's not being racist - she is half Estonian.

KatharinaRosalie · 23/11/2022 12:40

Estonian women traditionally used to stuff their wool stockings with extra padding, to look even sturdier and healthier. I mean you have to be able to work to support the husband and your seven kids..
