Will people wear black tomorrow?

I work in a fairly traditional environment. Not sure if I should wear black tomorrow or not? What's everyone else doing?

I didn't even wear black when my husband died. So no.

Civil servants etc might be expected to, but I don't see why any other employer should demand it, and actually choosing to seems a bit weird and mawkish.

alwaysfactor50 · 08/09/2022 22:29

@Meltingsocks yes our head teacher has asked us to wear black 🤷🏼‍♀️

HarleySq · 08/09/2022 22:30

CE of my LA has written to us regarding protocols. Suggestion is ‘respectful clothing’ in our work roles.

Abraxan · 08/09/2022 22:30

I won't wear bright colours tomorrow, or the day if the funeral if I'm at school that day. I don't k ie if I'll be wearing black - not sure what I'll be wearing yet, will see what's ironed and hung up in the morning, but I'll choose darker clothes I think, definitely not bright ones.

School haven't told us to wear anything in particular. It's a personal choice.

alwaysfactor50 · 08/09/2022 22:30

@carefullycourageous sorry the above was for you!

Waystation · 08/09/2022 22:31

I will wear dark colours (black navy) over the next few days - it just respect - May be old fashioned but it seems right to me - it’s my choice.

Whendovescry03 · 08/09/2022 22:31

No. If anyone in the team turns up at the office tomorrow in black I'll think they're being a bit overdramatic.

Prescottdanni123 · 08/09/2022 22:31

@Tania64

You do realize that it is employers and not the royal family that are asking people to wear black to work don't you?

alwaysfactor50 · 08/09/2022 22:32

@Meltingsocks I won't get hung up about it, if it helps the children understand I'm happy to do it 🤷🏼‍♀️

NeedAHoliday2021 · 08/09/2022 22:33

Yes but won’t be doing it for 10 days.I often wear black or navy though so no big drama.

What about if they ordinarily wear black or dark colours?

In the autumn/winter I often wear black 🤷‍♀️
Surely I should still be allowed to tomorrow, without being judged as overdramatic.

Talking of old fashioned my 80 year old nan just whatsapped me (she loves the WhatsApp now, she didn't like it at the start of the pandemic but is now a prolific user) to kindly remind me to keep the blinds closed and wear dark clothing as the nation is in mourning.

Bless her. 🥹😂

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/09/2022 22:37

I will, but only by coincidence really. I have 6 tops I wear in circulation for work and it just so happens the only 2 I have clean for tomorrow are both black and I wore black trousers today and they’re still clean enough to wear again tomorrow. I’m firmly republican and definitely wouldn’t choose to wear all black just because of a royal death but equally I’m not so petty I’m going to get another top washed and dried just to actively not wear black either! I wore a green cardigan today and if it’s cold I will wear that over my black top tomorrow too so may not be entirely black!

VinoDino · 08/09/2022 22:39

@CaptainBarbosa that's so cute!

inappropriateraspberry · 08/09/2022 22:39

I think it would be nice if everyone wore bright colours like the Queen. All one colour - top, bottoms and shoes!

cherrysthename · 08/09/2022 22:42

I had no idea this would be expected! It's like being in Victorian times all of a sudden.
The thought has never even crossed my mind when loved ones have died.
I'll be in the 'disrespectful' camp 🙄. I'm really not sure how dressing in a certain colour is a mark of respect. The queen isn't alive to see it and if she were, it's not like any of us would ever have met her!

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 08/09/2022 22:42

DH and I work for a company somewhat linked to the government, royals, etc so we've been asked to wear dark colours where possible. We both have meetings tomorrow so we will, but I'm not particularly fond of the royals so it's not some great sign of respect.

Wear a hat and carry a matching handbag!

TheMoth · 08/09/2022 22:43

I'm still in summer clothes. No black for me.

TakeTheOffPisteRoute · 08/09/2022 22:44

@PurpleDaisies

Not this crap again. People are capable of caring about more than one issue.

I think the ping is it's a non-issue. Just another individual going out of their way to feel offended

OnlyEverAutumn · 08/09/2022 22:44

@HereBeFuckery really? Couldn’t disagree more. I won’t be wearing black. I’m not in mourning. I’m not happy I’m not sad, I’m just working. I’ll wear what I want.

Newmum738 · 08/09/2022 22:45

Yes, I will be wearing black tomorrow.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/09/2022 22:45

Don't forget the marmalade sandwich!

TwoMonthsOff · 08/09/2022 22:45

What was the queens favourite designer in the 70’s ? Norman something …all those lovely pink and blue tailored coats and hats? She looked lovely in them. I wonder what happened to them. We’re they kept …

CherryGenoa · 08/09/2022 22:46

That’s a lovely idea @inappropriateraspberry , I would be up for that. I don’t own ten days worth of dark daytime clothing 😂 I love colour and wear only light grey or khaki as neutrals.
