Sunhats- why aren’t these worn more?

I’m curious as to why more people don’t wear sunhats given the extreme heat we’ve been getting over the years, and messages about covering up due to the risk of sunburn and melanoma etc? Even the days when it was 41 deg for two days a few weeks ago absolutely no parents were wearing hats at pick-up (many walk to/from school too).

I walk everywhere as I can’t drive and I get boiling hot. I bought a sunhat (like a straw one) last summer and rarely wear it outside of our garden as I feel so self-conscious that you don’t often seen them worn off a beach.

I wondered why people don’t wear them? Obviously this is a question for people who are out in the sun a lot and not those who go everywhere by car so are protected more.

Is it you don’t like hats, ‘hat hair,’ not fashionable, feel you don’t suit them, etc,? I want to wear my hat but feel such an idiot because most people don’t wear one when out walking. FIL says I should do as I like and stop worrying what other people think but I’ve been been able to be fashionable and feel like people are staring at me thinking I look like an idiot!

I bought this as it looked vaguely similar to the one worn by the DoC at Wimbledon and have had lots of people asking where I got it from (hopefully) in a complimentary way.

I burn easily and have very dark hair so get hot without a hat.

I wear sun hats everywhere, pretty much year round. I prefer them over putting spf on my face because I don’t like chemical sunscreens (dodgy as hell with all the endocrine disrupters) and the mineral ones tend to bead if I sweat.

I live in a sunny country though, so maybe not so weird to wear hats a lot. I have several different styles to go with various outfits. That said, not many people here wear hats either, except the tourists. And the farmers, who all wear baseball caps.

@Swannning love that hat. what colour did you go for? is it a decent size ie not too tight on head? thanks

I get migraines if I don’t wear a sun hat in the sun. I do feel self conscious wearing it to the shops or school though. Especially when it’s sunny but not particularly hot.
I tend to wear a cap which is a bit deeper than a baseball cap. Can’t remember what they’re called. Female version of an army cap I think.

I feel like you OP - that I’d look silly since they seem to be reserved for resort holidays and the beach (I like wide brimmed straw hats). Hence I don’t wear them in the UK. But the changing weather might change that…

Big old pumpkin 🎃 head and thick hair. I would love a wide brimmed floppy straw hat. I had one ever that fit my head, but I got it from a long forgotten local seller at a small town craft fair. I can't remember if the hat got lost or went mouldy.

For all my fellow big headed ladies out there, I bought 2 bucket hats from a company called Big Aussie Hats, they're comfortably loose on my giant 63cm circumference heid.

Thank you!! Off to have a nosey...

I bought this one a couple of years ago (when it wasn't quite so expensive!) proppatoppa.co.uk/collections/linen-sun-hats/products/packable-linen-sun-hat-with-string-plait?variant=31970373337206. It keeps its shape really well (it has a sort of springy strip round the brim) and folds flat in a bag or case.
