Sunhats- why aren’t these worn more?

I’m curious as to why more people don’t wear sunhats given the extreme heat we’ve been getting over the years, and messages about covering up due to the risk of sunburn and melanoma etc? Even the days when it was 41 deg for two days a few weeks ago absolutely no parents were wearing hats at pick-up (many walk to/from school too).

I walk everywhere as I can’t drive and I get boiling hot. I bought a sunhat (like a straw one) last summer and rarely wear it outside of our garden as I feel so self-conscious that you don’t often seen them worn off a beach.

I wondered why people don’t wear them? Obviously this is a question for people who are out in the sun a lot and not those who go everywhere by car so are protected more.

Is it you don’t like hats, ‘hat hair,’ not fashionable, feel you don’t suit them, etc,? I want to wear my hat but feel such an idiot because most people don’t wear one when out walking. FIL says I should do as I like and stop worrying what other people think but I’ve been been able to be fashionable and feel like people are staring at me thinking I look like an idiot!

I used to love a straw cowboy hat (think Meg Matthews at Glastonbury in the 90s), wish that look would come back

Divebar2021 · 14/08/2022 17:48

Hats look ok with dresses but you look like a numpty if you wear them with shirt and trousers

Well this is what panamas are for. I saw a foldable one in Italy and I kick myself for not trying it. Otherwise the mens sections option have this style. They look great with dresses too - far more chic than some other options.

I always wear a hat if I'm outside. I have a straw hat (which I sewed a ribbon round the edge of the brim, to prevent it from catching on my clothes), a couple of SPF rated hats from an Australian company, & a bog standard baseball cap to wear if it's potentially going to rain. And a felted woollen bucket hat with a wide brim for cold but sunny weather.
I also wear SPF 50 if I go out, lately I've started taking SPF with me to top up during the day too.

GreenCat44 · 14/08/2022 18:17

I currently have a colourful bucket hat that I got for a tenner when I was at the zoo. I love hats but none of them suit me, but I no longer care 🤷‍♀️
I don't really see any other women wearing hats where I live, which might explain why I get random people in cars shouting 'nice hat' at me 😂

CactiHug · 14/08/2022 18:24

I’ve got a baseball cap with this kind of clip at the back. I put my hair up in a bun and close the strap underneath. Then I can just unclip it when I want to take the cap off without having to faff about trying to get it off and back on over my hair.

Also, I've solved the hair on the back of the neck thing by wearing it in 2 plaits like I'm 12 👍
It's too short for one side plait.

GreenCat44 · 14/08/2022 19:11

Also, for everyone saying hats are a pain to pack. You can buy hat clips that go around your bag strap and then you just clip your hat to it. They have them on Amazon

Im a bit pernickity about my hair, it goes up and down all day long. I like it up but occassionally I'll put it down. I couldnt be doing with the faff of it being in a hat where I cant control that

I also remembered today that I put my sunglasses up on my head, up and down, up and down all day long.

I find hats so inconvenient and annoying.

When it's hot, hats make my head hotter.

That's why I've never worn them even from childhood. My parents constantly struggled to get a hat on me, even when I was very small

Same here. That and they're awkward to carry when you're inside or on the train or whatever. I also can't put my sunglasses on my head if I've got a hat on.

That wouldn't get past Ryan Air's one/two bags rule though would it? You'd have to wear it to board.

sundayvibeswig22 · 15/08/2022 21:09

I wear a cap (without the top bit) so my head doesn't get too hot but it keeps the sun out of my face.

Adversity · 15/08/2022 21:15

I have a few sun hats and also baseball caps plus those sort of bucket hats. I almost always wear one. I have a couple of folding hats that’s squash and release back to their shape. DH has a hat made from bark that we bought on honeymoon in Africa. He wears a Panama to the cricket.

3luckystars · 15/08/2022 21:21

Well I don’t really go out in the sun at all but now I really want a hat! I always imagined they would make me warmer though?

those stylish Japanese hats sound awesome, I’m going to be on a mission now to find a nice hat. I have tons of curly hair so thanks for the mens hat tip!

UxbridgeVoteBJOut · 15/08/2022 21:26

I wear a big straw hat, have done for > 15 years. Don't care what others do or don't, but yes I'm the odd one out. Mine is like this, but very beat up. I probably paid $15 for it, not £69 !

UxbridgeVoteBJOut · 15/08/2022 21:27

ps: mine has chin straps, so stays on my head in windy conditions.

Sheffieldissunny · 15/08/2022 22:44

I had a lovely wide brimmed hat which is now at the bottom of Windermere after kayaking on a windy day ☹️, and I haven't found another one to replace it

3luckystars · 16/08/2022 08:06

Well I have just been up most of the night browsing hats. I’m sorted now!!! Thank you 👒

Peridot1 · 16/08/2022 09:04

Hats generally don’t suit me but I did find a nice white one with a black ribbon in Australia a few years ago and it packs well too. It’s soft so rolls up a bit and still keeps it’s shape. I wear it a lot on holiday or in the garden here. I’m obsessive about wearing spf and still have some sun spots on my face and my hair is very fine so I need the protection of a hat.

Daisy62 · 16/08/2022 11:59

I wear hats when I’m in the sun for any length of time. I like cotton wide brim ones mostly. I got two at National Trust shop this summer - one with a Velcro opening at the back for pony tail or bun, and one with a chin strap if it’s windy. Also have a Velcro one from Mountain Warehouse. The Velcro ones have been a game changer for hair, tho my bun has to be lower. When hair is loose, sweeping it to the other side from your usual parting can help, to avoid that flat hat hair look. When you take the hat off, push your hair back to its usual place.

Auldspinster · 16/08/2022 13:04

For all my fellow big headed ladies out there, I bought 2 bucket hats from a company called Big Aussie Hats, they're comfortably loose on my giant 63cm circumference heid.

3luckystars · 16/08/2022 13:53

I must look them up now! Thank you x

Dodolovesme · 16/08/2022 14:00

I wear a hat! I look like a prat but I don't like sunglasses and it keeps the sun out of my eyes.
It's sort of a straw boater, got it(new) from the charity shop. I have lots of thick, fine hair that gets very hot so I tend wear it in a low messy bun at the nape of my neck.
In my head I look like a character from poirot.....

AnchorWHAT · 16/08/2022 15:44

I have a fake straw fedora in cream colour with a black band, very smart! Its foldable so i can stuff it in a bag, cost me about a fiver new from e bay.

Chubarubrub · 16/08/2022 15:48

They don’t fit me. Most sun hats are too small for my head. Trilby, fedoras, big floppy straw ones, all too tight!

Caps make my head and hair sweaty too .

I might try a visor though, I like the retro look, although it won’t protect the top of my head…

Prettypussy · 16/08/2022 15:53

They make your head sweaty and your hair looks terrible when you take them off!

If I had longer and thicker hair which covered my scalp properly I wouldn't wear one- I only do because I have such fine short hair and always get a burnt parting without one!
