Sunhats- why aren’t these worn more?

I’m curious as to why more people don’t wear sunhats given the extreme heat we’ve been getting over the years, and messages about covering up due to the risk of sunburn and melanoma etc? Even the days when it was 41 deg for two days a few weeks ago absolutely no parents were wearing hats at pick-up (many walk to/from school too).

I walk everywhere as I can’t drive and I get boiling hot. I bought a sunhat (like a straw one) last summer and rarely wear it outside of our garden as I feel so self-conscious that you don’t often seen them worn off a beach.

I wondered why people don’t wear them? Obviously this is a question for people who are out in the sun a lot and not those who go everywhere by car so are protected more.

Is it you don’t like hats, ‘hat hair,’ not fashionable, feel you don’t suit them, etc,? I want to wear my hat but feel such an idiot because most people don’t wear one when out walking. FIL says I should do as I like and stop worrying what other people think but I’ve been been able to be fashionable and feel like people are staring at me thinking I look like an idiot!

I always feel like the lone weirdo on the beach and in the sea wearing a baseball cap. I love the sun but don't want my head fried thankyouverymuch.

Carpediem15 · 13/08/2022 14:33

I must at least a dozen hats and never go out in Summer without one. I buy them when we are on holiday or online as the ones in shops in UK are usually not very nice unless you have a hat shop near you. I also have visors like the Japanese ones mentioned and also wear nice one in Winter.
I really don't care what people say amongst themselves but I am the one protecting myself not them plus I never take the hat off when I go in a shop, waste of time.

KangarooKenny · 13/08/2022 14:34

I have a wide brimmed sun hat that I take on holiday, it’s a pain to take on the plane. Plus a white baseball cap for in and round the pool. Yes, I’m the one with a hat on in the pool !

QuestionableMouse · 13/08/2022 14:35

I love my hats. Have a straw one that I bought at the Great Yorkshire Show years ago that is battered but very comfortable, and a canvas/cotton type one from amazon that's nice too. I need one because my ears/scalp tend to burn. I've got the canvas one on now with my hair in a bun so it can be done 😁

MakeadealwithGod · 13/08/2022 14:35

It would never occur to me to wear a sun hat and I have never had one. I don’t even wear one abroad.

I’m not generally a hat person though and would probably only wear a woolly hat in the winter if it was literally snowing and then I would borrow my dc’s.

OriginalUsername2 · 13/08/2022 14:41

Hats feel like putting a lid on a boiling pot on me!

AclowncalledAlice · 13/08/2022 14:41

I hate having my head covered so don't wear hats in summer or in winter. I don't wear hoods when it's lashing down with rain either.

BemusedBrenda · 13/08/2022 14:43

If I spend any length of time in hot sun without a hat it's guaranteed I will get sun stroke, so I am always in a hat in the summer. I love wide brimmed straw hats and I do often get complimented on them so to any PP who feel self conscious, there is really no need! As others have said, garden centres are normally really good for sun hats and that's where my latest one came from.

I dont wear a hat in the winter for exactly the same reasons I posted that I dont wear a hat in the summer, dont like my hair down, cant stand things on my head and having a hot head under a hat, plus the pain on my forehead.

Same
They feel uncomfortable, sweaty, itchy and I can't wear my hair up.
I don't care what I look like but I'm not feeling uncomfortable for anyone.

FlippertyGibberts · 13/08/2022 14:55

I wear a sun hat - a proper outdoors one with a decent width brim. They don't just protect your scalp; they protect your face and eyes too.

I don't particularly care what it looks like 😄.

You can also buy nice UV umbrellas:

This is the first summer I've worn one every day on holiday. A baseball hat. It's been great. My hair looks shit in really hot weather anyway so can just tie it up in some sort of chignon and wear the cap. Really don't want the burnt scalp look.

DisplayPurposesOnly an extremely elegant Japanese lady who lives near me uses a parasol. It makes her look even more elegant. I think parasols may be more common in Japan, particularly with older people.

My parasols are all Japanese, from the late 40s or early 50s. But I've seen quite a few people using a regular umbrella to keep the sun off lately. Not so chic, but sensible.

Wotcha23 · 13/08/2022 15:05

I wear a baseball cap quite often but found a straw hat makes me much hotter.

Sheepreallylikerichteabiscuits · 13/08/2022 15:07

My heads too big and my hair is too thick and curly.

Even the baseball hats that only curls do are too tight on my head ( which is insane because they are designed for people with thick curly hair and my heads not that big!)

CMOTDibbler · 13/08/2022 15:10

I wear a sun hat all the time and dgaf what anyone thinks. Currently I have developed a severe sun reaction, so for the last 2 years I have been completely covered up in the sun as well and people are weird about that too. I was at a sporting event this morning where people were going to be in full sun all day and loads had uncovered shoulders and heads

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 13/08/2022 15:13

For people complaining about long hair on your neck under a hat try looking for "ponytail sun hat" - you pull your hair through the back of the hat & get a lovely cool neck!

I don't wear straw hats because my skin doesn't like them but wear cotton bucket hats /ponytail wide brim hats (pony tail helps keep the hat on too) lots. The thing that stops me is the wind when out walking.

Riverlee · 13/08/2022 15:14

We were in Whistable this morning, and actually commented on how many people were wearing them! Women generally had a wide-brimmed wicker one.

tapdancingmum · 13/08/2022 15:15

I have just ordered this 2 Pieces Womens Ponytail Wide Brim Sun Hat Packable UV Protection Beach Cap for Fishing & Hiking amzn.eu/bOZuDvN

Coming tomorrow, just for the heatwave to finish 😀

Ivyruin · 13/08/2022 15:22

I never used to wear hats as i thought i looked daft but I learnt my lesson last week! I was away abroad, wore factor 50 but my face was really burnt and swelled up! So now I wear a hat to cover my face as it was horrible. I actually realised u like them and they suit me.

GraceandMolly · 13/08/2022 15:26

I’ve not found a hat that goes with my clothes. I find that straw hats need a beach dress and a cocktail in hand to look in place. What hat would look ok in the city?

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/08/2022 15:27

I've taken to wearing bucket hats lately (when it's really hot) and don't mind standing out a bit.

MacKenzieMcHale · 13/08/2022 15:33

Hats must make my head even hotter.

And I can't take it off once it's on, as my stupid soft hair looks ridiculous once it's been hatted on 😆
