Sunhats- why aren’t these worn more?

I’m curious as to why more people don’t wear sunhats given the extreme heat we’ve been getting over the years, and messages about covering up due to the risk of sunburn and melanoma etc? Even the days when it was 41 deg for two days a few weeks ago absolutely no parents were wearing hats at pick-up (many walk to/from school too).

I walk everywhere as I can’t drive and I get boiling hot. I bought a sunhat (like a straw one) last summer and rarely wear it outside of our garden as I feel so self-conscious that you don’t often seen them worn off a beach.

I wondered why people don’t wear them? Obviously this is a question for people who are out in the sun a lot and not those who go everywhere by car so are protected more.

Is it you don’t like hats, ‘hat hair,’ not fashionable, feel you don’t suit them, etc,? I want to wear my hat but feel such an idiot because most people don’t wear one when out walking. FIL says I should do as I like and stop worrying what other people think but I’ve been been able to be fashionable and feel like people are staring at me thinking I look like an idiot!

I wear a sun hat all the time. A nice bright coloured cotton one. I need it as my hair is fine and my scalp burns badly and I have a lot of moles on my scalp too.

I have noticed hardly anyone wears hats too, even in this weather. I’m baffled how they don’t feel uncomfortable and burn. Perhaps their hair offers some protection whereas mine gives none.

LionessesRules · 13/08/2022 15:41

Sun hats never fit. They either blow off, or leave red marks because they are too tight.
Hate wolly hats and rain hoods too. My poor scalp pretty much gets exposed to all weathers.

LordEmsworth · 13/08/2022 15:46

I wear a bucket hat from Fat Face. I spend a lot of money getting my hair coloured, it would be crazy to let the sun just bleach it; plus my face/neck/shoulders burn easily so better to shade them as well as sun cream (despite the sudden sun cream conspiracy theorists on this board).

Obviously hats don't let the heat away from your head, but it's still much nicer than having the sun on your scalp.

My lovely SIL died from constant exposure to the sun on her head- sporty ,not a sunworshipper- no one ever though about hats in the 80s 90s - melanoma on her head that spread before she ever went to a medic. And she had thick curly hair too.
People should all wear hats. 😞

oviraptor21 · 13/08/2022 15:48

I quite like hats but don't usually bother with them in the summer as they make my head hotter. I've got a good coverage of hair so they'd only be any use for keeping the sun off my face.

I got a brilliant one online - it’s like the ones that Japanese women were (wider brim at the front) and the top bit zips up and there’s a detachable ‘scarf’ at the back that you can dangle down, tie around your pony tale or take off and wear like a bandana. It’s soft so can be rolled up.

its a lifesaver in this sun.

Do you have a link, please?

Carpediem15 · 13/08/2022 18:36

I have a couple of these and I love them.

LoobyDop · 13/08/2022 18:47

I have long, thick hair. When I wear a hat I do it in a low plait pulled round to the side. Also gives some protection against hat hair.

Butterflysize · 13/08/2022 19:13

love wearing a hat but struggle to find one that fits well / that I love. I really love a straw trilby with a nice ribbon.

I tried to get one for holiday this morning as I can't keep wearing my husband's cap and there are none in the high street shops in my town. Plenty of beanies and a felt beret in TKMaxx!

Any recommendations on somewhere to buy a nice, large brimmed non floppy one would be appreciated.

Amazon I'm afraid.

whoopdedo · 13/08/2022 19:17

I wear one on the school run. It's brings so much relief.

I’ve just been. Wearing my white baseball cap on the beach this morning, it was lovely. I kept looking at the others who were mostly hat-less and thinking about how their faces would be ageing in the hot sun! Plus I had a skin cancer scare earlier in the year. White is a good colour for keeping cool.

if you wear a hat you might find that others follow suit! I lived in Australia and they all wear hats there, Brits are useless at dressing for sun.

I went to a test match in Sydney one New Year. DH and I were practically the only ones without hats - no idea why as I had at least three back at the hotel 🙄

Bacl in the UK I have a straw hat which I wear a lot although not to work as I have a lovely shady walk.

dudsville · 13/08/2022 19:27

I wear them, or just started last year. I can't wear spf on my face or don't like the bright sun in my eyes. I don't care whether they're trendy. Mine are visor style but made of paper or wheat looking stuff. got Them from amazon, i think originating from China.

Hawkins001 · 13/08/2022 20:03

I prefer hats as it helps shield the direct sun on my head, especially when I'm in the sun for 5+ hours a day. I like the bucket type mats but got baseball caps, for now

MinglingFlamingo · 13/08/2022 20:31

I have a very small head so they never fit properly. I have a wide brimmed one but find it itchy and uncomfortable and hard to lie down on the beach in. I really should wear one but have still to find the perfect one

Hottytotty · 13/08/2022 20:40

I have this one from Toast - it is HUGE and I love it, even though I almost had to remortgage my flat to buy it even in the sale. It’s like having a parasol on your head, though it can be a bit problematic in the wind 😂. It has certainly come into its own this summer though.

I’ve not found a hat that goes with my clothes. I find that straw hats need a beach dress and a cocktail in hand to look in place. What hat would look ok in the city?

I've got a straw trilby style in a couple of colours (asos) and I find they go with most things. I never wear business attire though, can't imagine anything working with that! But jeans or shorts and a t-shirt/vest look fine.

Creameggs223 · 13/08/2022 21:01

My head is hot and sweaty enough without putting a hat on to add to it, plenty of suncream does me just fine.

ShinySquirrel · 13/08/2022 21:03

My head is too big AND I have thick hair. None of the bloody hats fit me, or I'd be wearing them.

I have a visor-style sun hat that fastens with a buckle at the back. It's better than nothing.

BooksAndHooks · 13/08/2022 21:03

I have a child size head and face so they never fit me unless I buy children’s which obviously look ridiculous. I have the same problem with glasses and sunglasses, adults swamp my face and I have to buy from kids section.

RedWingBoots · 13/08/2022 21:22

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/08/2022 12:44

I have a couple that I love but they don't stay on well if it's breezy and I don't want to lose them.

Actually my sun visor one stays on best. I wore it on a day out recently and it was ace.

Mainly tho I just stay in the shade as much as possible.

Bring back parasols! ☂

Seen a number of people using umbrellas in the heat waves. The first day it was mainly East Asians but by the second day it was people of any ethnicity.

FruitToast · 13/08/2022 21:25

A couple of years ago, I wouldn't have been seen dead in a hat, but I was complaining about my hair being greasy after suncreaming my scalp, ears etc and I needed to find a better suncream. DH pointed out the DC have some very nice, fairly expensive legionnaire hats that I'm always putting on their heads and it would be cheaper to buy a hat than continuously get expensive suncream. So despite my reservations, I bought myself a huge floppy brimmed, legionnaire hat from Amazon and it's actually amazing (but probably not very stylish). No more headaches from squinting in the sun even with my sunglasses on, haven't burnt my scalp or ears since and it has a little hole hidden by a bow to stick your ponytail through (or at least accommodate my bobble). I forgot it when I went out today and I really regretted it.

RedWingBoots · 14/08/2022 00:01

I'm amazed by the number who don't wear hats. I presume you are all your natural hair colour?

As the sun will damage dye,d hair.

I use to wear hats for that reason alone.

EquallyDivided · 14/08/2022 06:24

Yes, I didn't know hat wearing because of hair colouring was a thing. I avoid being out in the sun as much as possible though.
