For me:

  • Fake tan - it looks shit on my Celtic white skin, smells shit, makes a mess, takes too much time and is expensive. I gave up on it about age 22

  • Wearing rings and bracelets. I realised at the age of 38 that I never put them on because I hate the feeling of my hands being constricted. Especially as I type all day long.

  • Uncomfortable shoes. Life is too short to hobble.

@Duttercup thanks! Yeah I know it's much better than it used to be but I think if I were going to bother, I'd go for spray tans. No way I'm standing in my own bathroom again trying to reach my own back!

Fair - there's no dignity in a mitt on a wooden spoon.

ChanceEauFraiche · 31/07/2022 18:40

I gave up on pretty underwear after my first child was born. I’ve been in big black granny pants ever since (in fact, even my Mum who is an actual granny wouldn’t be seen dead in them). They’re just so comfy.

Same for ‘nice’ nightwear. I just wear a big tshirt or cosy pjs in winter.

Sacked off heels after the lockdown and have never gone back.

Still fake tanning, shaving hairy bits, doing my nails and dying the greys…but rapidly losing patience with the whole beauty schtick.

Other people's drama and bullshit

Haha THIS

Jellywobblescobbles · 31/07/2022 18:51

friends who I have less and less in common with - no point trying anymore

Friffle · 31/07/2022 18:56

Fake tan - I used to be dedicated to the fake tan life and then about a decade ago I thought 'I cannot be faffed anymore!'. So much labour involved in fake tanning. Now I think I look much more chic embracing my natural skin tone.

Trying to get my hair to hold a wave - hairdressers can't manage it, I can't manage it. My hair is resolutely straight and I have accepted that.

That posted itself! Means nothing

TalkingToMyselfAgain · 31/07/2022 19:01

jewellery of any kind - I haven't worn a wedding ring for 39 years.
high heels - I can't walk in them and they make my feet hurt.
blow-drying my hair - it's short, and naturally curly. I wash and leave it.
Insincerity from anyone - "Have a nice day" and "Stay safe" is bollocks and I don't appreciate it.

HMSSophia · 31/07/2022 19:12

The news. Bloody hell it's depressing

HearMeSnore · 31/07/2022 19:13

Anything that makes life more difficult than it needs to be. I am 48. I have worked hard all my adult life, managing parenthood at the same time. By the time DD is old enough to look after herself, my parents will be elderly and I'll need to look after them.

I can do without any more demands on my time and energy!

So, grooming now consists of soap and water, a hairbrush and deodorant. Makeup: On special occasions I might stretch to tinted moisturiser, a dab of shimmery crème eyeshadow and tinted lipsalve.
Any shoes other than trainers and footbed sandals can get to f*ck.
If clothes are not comfortable enough to sleep in they are not comfortable enough full stop. Anything tight, itchy or non-breathable is out.
If knickers are smaller than the footprint of an average Volvo they are out.
Jewellery - no objection in principle but generally can't be arsed. Again, if I can't sleep in it, it's not getting worn.
And sex. Seriously - who has the energy? Fortunately DH feels much the same. In general we'd both prefer a mug of cocoa and an early night!

HMSSophia · 31/07/2022 19:13

In S&B terms, I'd say nice coats. I have loads but just bring out the same mega warm black coat regardless

Squiff70 · 31/07/2022 19:25

I have a zero tolerance policy on bullshit. Does that count? 😁

DonateBloodNCheckSmokeAlarms · 31/07/2022 19:46

@Duttercup yeah, sounds like on "My 600lb Life" when they show you their morning routine! A rag on a stick in the bathroom!

Bras

SpotlessMind88 · 31/07/2022 20:07

Straightening my hair, gave up in lockdown.
Make-up most of the time (thank God for masks)
And Shaving

PersonaNonGarter · 31/07/2022 20:31

And expensive candles. I literally have no idea who is buying those. What a scam.

Lorrymum · 31/07/2022 20:34

Hair dye, hadn't realised how gloriously white my hair actually is.

Hallamus · 31/07/2022 20:51

My fucking husband.

Hallamus · 31/07/2022 20:51

Oh, just saw this is in S & B. Well, I think he's prematurely aging me anyway.

DanceForeverUnderTheLights · 31/07/2022 20:56

Shapewear. If I'm going out, I want to be able to eat and drink without feeling like I'm being squeezed.

I recently chopped off about a foot of hair. It's still pretty long, but much quicker to dry.

AyeUpMeDuck · 31/07/2022 21:01

I'm also over trying to have a reasonable online discussion using facts, figures and sources etc.
Only to have others hand wave it all away.

What's the fricking point..

Screw it.

Anyone remember Billy Myers?
Kiss The Rain
She was stunningly beautiful...

*Wistfully remembers being young again.

ScreamingMeMe · 31/07/2022 21:04

High heels. Could never walk in them that well and they always hurt my feet.

Bras that are pretty but not comfy.

ScreamingMeMe · 31/07/2022 21:09

Also, and this will probably horrify some people: skincare. I've never found a moisturiser that doesn't feel greasy, or an eye treatment that doesn't irritate the sensitive skin around my eyes.

Just washing my face with water and taking Evening Primrose oil seems to keep my skin soft. I'm early 40s and have two fine lines on my forehead and that's it, so I'm beginning to think it's all just a big rip-off. I'm not sure I care that much about getting wrinkles now anyway.
