Do I chop it off?!

I have had long hair for years and years. I've just booked a hair appointment for the first time in about three years and I fancy something different.

I am really fat. Really really overweight. So I feel like short hair makes my face look rounder/fatter BUT with my long thin hair I also feel like I look like a bit of a slob as well. My hair is thin and the ends are terrible. I really wish I could go into a hairdressers and tell them to do what they want - something that will make me look amazing but they all stare blankly and say 'it's up to you'. So I get two inches off and go about my day. I want something different this time!

I've just been trying dresses on so my daughter took a pic of me - I don't generally have any pics of me so this is probably the best I can do.

Do I chop it off?!

I think about 3 inches off, some layers and balayage. I'd never be in favour of cutting it all off I'm afraid! Longer hair is more

I would go for a sloping shoulder length bob myself. But yes its not doing your any favours as it is, looks in nice condition so show it off maybe try a fringe?

Sexnotgender · 04/07/2022 16:02

I don’t think it’s doing you any favours right now. A long textured Bob would look great on you.

niki26 · 04/07/2022 16:03

Thank you both!

Yes I was thinking a fringe - last time I got my hair cut at a salon I mentioned a fringe and she asked me whether I wanted a blunt fringe, a side fringe, a full fringe..... I didn't know and just chickened out.

I'm googling a load of stuff now!

I agree with the sloping shoulder length bob

Sorry @Sexnotgender you wrote as I was typing a response - thank you!

Have a look at that lovely French actress who had the beautiful fringe, I forget her name.

I had long hair for years, not like yours, mine was massive and curly. I dearly regret it and its almost back to what it was.

Iiwu I'd go for slightly shorter and fuller, and that lovely parted fringe, and twist it up at the back.

Have a lovely time at your appointment, being spoiled x

Sexnotgender · 04/07/2022 16:07

I’d suggest a long side fringe.

Don't underestimate the maintenance of a fringe. I love a fringe but have fine flat hair that invariably looks greasy, flat and stuck to my forehead despite daily washing. If you have remotely oily skin I'd avoid

knackeredagain · 04/07/2022 16:10

I’d take it to between the shoulder and boob, with some layers, and possibly side swept fringe to give a bit of shape. I wouldn’t go too short with it but it does need some straggle removed.

magbob · 04/07/2022 16:10

You look lovely in that dress x

Wellthatsachangeforthebetter · 04/07/2022 16:23

That dress is lovely on you 😁

Guineapiggiesmalls · 04/07/2022 16:28

You are not really, really overweight. And that dress is lovely on you.

I would be tempted to chop your hair between chin & bust, on that photo to you where your cleavage begins, and get some choppy layers. It’ll appear thicker because it won’t be so weighed down.

Squills · 04/07/2022 16:29

I'd go for a fringe and soft tapering at the sides. I'd also have about 6 inches off the length to balance things.

Good luck!

APrickleOfHedgehogs · 04/07/2022 16:31

You've got good hair, I'd go for a Dakota Johnson style fringe and a glossing treatment.

bert3400 · 04/07/2022 16:31

A blunt cut bob looks great on thin straight hair

Do I chop it off?!

Yes, this. It needs more volume but I wouldn't go full bob.

niki26 · 04/07/2022 16:37

Thank you everyone - I am taking it all on board!

I'd kill for long straight hair

You look lovely in that dress

Make a Pinterest folder with all the cuts you like and discuss with your hairdresser

I agree a fringe would suit you

Please be nicer to yourself

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/07/2022 16:40

You don't have to cut it right off, there are lots of lovely shoulder length styles and hair dyes.
I think too short would not look right.

Nah, longer hair is just a PITA. Takes ages to wash, ages to dry, ages to style and usually just ends up scrapped back because I CBA. I have curly hair that needs to be styled and dried properly otherwise it looks shit.

I'm getting mine chopped soon. Just touching my shoulders. Anything else is too hard maintenence.

Boating123 · 04/07/2022 16:41

I would go for shoulder length.

Can you post a picture after you've had it cut?

Dancinginthedark01 · 04/07/2022 16:41

I think you should have 6-8 inches off and some layering/long fringe around the front.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/07/2022 16:43

Get a fringe, don't cut your hair short

And buy a Yapoy off Amazon and wave your hair - it gives it body and balances out the extra width at the shoulders - at the moment hair looks a bit thin

I have hair like yours but with a few extensions added in to give body - it also then lifts the hair away from head so you don't need to wash it as frequently- I now only wash mine twice a week

You look great in that dress Flowers

niki26 · 04/07/2022 16:45

@Boating123 I will definitely post a pic post hair cut!
