As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

*wear

I'm not particularly fashionable. I like Toast dresses and Birkenstocks, so I've worn them for years, and still do. My hair is what it is, and my make up is minimal. Style-wise, I haven't changed for years. I love natural fabrics and comfort.

However, I saw a couple of office workers today, wearing suits and ties and shirts, and they looked so uncomfortable and stuffy. It was like something from another age. It just seemed vaguely ridiculous and unnecessary.

puffalo · 30/06/2022 16:03

A lot of people commenting about still wearing things that are “dated”.

It’s obviously completely fine to wear exactly what you want. My style is very fluid (can be very minimal one day and girly another, but I always add pieces that are edgy to make everything a bit more “me”; chunky Docs, big oversized jackets, etc. I like an alternative vibe travelling through all my outfits).

I will always wear what I like, regardless of the trends, but every season I’ll buy a piece or two to refresh my wardrobe. It doesn’t have to cost a lot, but I think sometimes having a new “on trend” piece (that you actually love and would wear regardless of trends) is a great way to take a tired look and make it look fresh.

Eg: I have a tonne of tea dresses that I bring out every summer, but this year I’ve bought these incredible double platform doc sandals. They take something that looks quite feminine, and toughen it up. The sandals I will wear year on year because I love a chunky shoe, but they just revitalise old pieces that are always in my wardrobe. They look fab with jeans as well so completely versatile.

@ClaudineClare
Unless you're a size 8, 5 foot 4, Asian woman there's no point in me sharing my style and fashion with you.

I'm not Asian but I'm size 8 and 5' 4" so it might work for me!

Braggiography · 30/06/2022 16:08

Oh well, afrumpin' I will go 😆

I'm with you, sister.

itsnotmeitisactuallyyou · 30/06/2022 16:10

A lot of these outdated styles mentioned feature regularly on This Morning fashion segments!

TwoMonthsOff · 30/06/2022 16:12

It’s not ‘polar’ it’s ‘polo’ (neck)
I’ve seen that twice now on this thread
if you can’t spell what you are (not) recommending then I can’t trust you sorry !

This thread has been a welcome diversion from work for a half hour for me.
Those who moan what they wear has been classed as dated, no one is saying you can no longer wear it, the choice is yours. I def wear some dated things, confidence and comfort is key with clothes though.

Cardigans - I do love them but have found my "neat and tidy" merino fine knit ones do feel dated. I have some chunkier ones which feel less so. As an alternative I'm wearing more sweatshirts in plain light colours. Seen a lot of folksy quilted jackets on insta so these are probably more "current".

Midi dress trainers denim jacket - has become like a uniform (the skinny jeans and Breton of 10 years ago). So it's popular but will be dated soon as it's everywhere.

Tight fit clothes - if you are young it's all about the oversized look. Accept this is more difficult for those of us who are more mature to pull off but fitted clothes.

I miss being in town more to see what the younger folk are wearing. The dated looks are all very much alive and well in my semi rural village!

PollyEsther · 30/06/2022 16:13

Read the first page and come to the conclusion that, at 33, I am really frumpy Blush I just don't know how to dress as a fat (size 20 arse) person I don't think, so I stick with the 'safe' jeggings and v-neck t-shirts. Stray into the odd midi with trainers, which I adore. Have some medical issues that make skechers the very best trainers to wear day to day though, so knowing they're now 'old' is depressing.

Anyway, my personally feelings on dated looks are:

Lip filler in any capacity
HD brows
Eyelash extensions
Acrylic nails
Crushed velvet/mirrors
Straight hair (we're all naturally curly now..?)
Scarves
Heels, thank goodness.

I am woefully uninformed though, I can't do nice clothes shopping. I've never understood fashion and now I'm too fat so... Urgh. Sad

@TwoMonthsOff

I knew it looked wrong!

But thank you for putting me straight.

You do sound rude.

That’s what everyone should do @puffalo

It makes it much easier if you build on a basic wardrobe of things you like and mix and match from there.

I think a lot of people have a lot of anxiety around clothes, though, so try to only buy complete outfits.

Yes! They remind me of being in kindergarten. Quite a few teachers and mums in them in in 1981. Very vintage Laura Ashley. Haven’t seen many “in the wild” though. Not an easy thing to wear,

Not seen many out and about! Yes my teachers wore them 😄

Invisibella · 30/06/2022 16:22

Lack of eyebrows or slug eyebrows. Tattoos.
Too much makeup.

Rearwindow12 · 30/06/2022 16:23

What happened to skinny jeans? I've only just replaced my flared ones from 2007 with skinny after waiting for them to come back in (which they didn't!)!! What the heck have they been replaced with?

Skinny Flares 😁

I haven't seen much of the slug brow/fake lips/contouring etc in London in years either, but I do read about it on here, so it must exist.

It exists in Liverpool and Newcastle. As well as other Northern towns like Wigan, Barrow etc. There has always been a more glam look in those places than in London or Manchester though.

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 16:26

@Rearwindow12

To be honest I'm not totally sure what the most trendy style of jean is.

It makes it much easier if you build on a basic wardrobe of things you like and mix and match from there.

I think a lot of people have a lot of anxiety around clothes, though, so try to only buy complete outfits.

I used to make that mistake in my early twenties. I’d buy all these amazing standout “pieces” but never want to spend money on “boring” basics. I ended up with a wardrobe full of cool things, but only one way to wear them as everything clashed with each other 9 times out of 10.

Now I have a great, solid collection of basics in neutral shades and only buy pieces I can style 5+ different ways for day and night. A handful of trend pieces to spice things up, but again, they have to go with x items in my wardrobe or I don’t buy them. I’m equally as fussy with sale items too; it doesn’t matter if something is £5 or not. If I won’t wear it over and over, then it’s a waste.

My wardrobe is smaller now but carefully curated and I have so many options. I don’t ever feel like I’ve got nothing to wear. Every addition is thought out and considered. The basics are timeless. The trend pieces are a bit of fun.

I’ve came a long way from my uni days of buying clothes every single week, that’s for sure!

Always aspiring to this.

@AWobABobBob that picture of Girls Aloud is 18 years old. Of course their outfits look dated.

If only we could all get the money we spent in our teens and twenties refunded!
