As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Skinny jeans
jeans with rips
denim jackets and leather jackets
tank tops
Bleached platinum/ grey / lilac grey hair
long bobs
yellow raincoats
Fake tan / orange skin

Were yelloe raincoats a thing. I must have missed that one. The little boy in IT?

woodlandarchitect · 30/06/2022 15:20

My hairdresser told me that me that blonde hair / balayage and highlights were going out of fashion and more people were opting for light brown and auburn colourings.

no idea if true or how long it’ll last! I love my blonde hair as I look washed out with dark hair. So I’ll keep having highlights :) I don’t mind frumpy hair

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 15:20

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

Yup! I am not giving up my cardigans, midi dresses, waist wrap dresses, hip
length tops or leggings. At 40 I am pst caring whether I am in some arbitrary fashion category or not. That’s one left for those in the naivety of youth for me. Classic style otoh never gets old.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 30/06/2022 15:21

The most dated thing is the attitude that various body parts will look too big in random item of clothing/shoes. I don’t see the young women caring as much (which is great!).

There’s many replies on here of women saying they can’t wear shorter tops, certain style of shoe etc and it’s such a shame we’ve been so manipulated by the media/fashion and mens opinions!!

The over 40’s, myself included, have had it drilled into us that we have to be small and other peoples comfort comes above our own physical comfort.

@AnnaFF Joules and Seasalt had a yellow raincoat trend going on for a while 💛

Side partings!

Well that's unfortunate because I'd look ridiculous with a parting in the middle. Or no parting at all and a fringe.

For me talking about looks being dated is a bit silly. Kids listen to music from all eras these days so surely you can wear clothes from all eras too!

School uniforms are dated but most school headteachers don't agree with me Grin

allfurcoatnoknickers · 30/06/2022 15:29

@w10mum3 Hahah, I can see why you would think that! I think everyone's just on a rigorous anti-ageing regimen - the goal is to spend an absolute fortune looking like you've done absolutely noting except get up and scrub your face with soap and water and allow your hair to be naturally highlighted by the sun.

Obv while swanning about wearing your $$$$ athleisure.

Oh a related note, I'm always really surprised when people on MN mention slug brows, contouring fake lips/overlining and visible botox - that went the way of the dodo here by about 2016 when it got flattened by the Glossier juggernaut.

AchatAVendre · 30/06/2022 15:29

Baylayage! Although why do people assume that some of us aren't naturally blond and don't want to dye our hair to a darker colour? But bloody baylayage. I've lost count of the times I've been patronisingly suggested having baylayage instead of my natural colour because it would "look more natural".

Also, full sleeve/leg tattoos with lots of red and blue.

Very dark fake tan.

Long false eyelashes.

Terribly unnatural filled lips that jut out from the face side on like a pair of sink plungers.

High heels, except some lowish wedges or trainer wedges.

Jeans tucked into long boots.

Those narrow skirts with slits up the back (are they called pencil skirts?)

Those ubiquitous pudding bowl style hairstyles that are supposed to be "suitable" for women over 35 but very rarely suit anyone with a round face shape.

Big bums. Apparently the Khardashians are having their big arses dissolved, I fear we’re heading back to the early naughties and size zero!

“Fashion” in body size is the most revolting kind of fashion diktat.

HesterShaw1 · 30/06/2022 15:31

Oh dear. This thread isn't leaving me with many options!

Oh well, I look like a bag lady most of the time.

CataTonic58 · 30/06/2022 15:36

Being a slave to a fashion trend?

tinygigolo · 30/06/2022 15:36

Yes absolutely, I love seeing adverts for clothing companies with different size models wearing the same outfit. I really hope for a different world for my kids where they can truly wear whatever they want no matter their size without the toxic "dressing for your shape" shit that has haunted us in our 40s/50s since we were teens

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 30/06/2022 15:36

Purplepeopleeaterz · 30/06/2022 12:20

This for me too, I dress in styles I like & couldn't give a single solitary shit if followers of fashion are judging.

The big problem the fashion mega industry is up against is environmentalism. It’s absolutely ridiculous to be pronouncing cardigans are “dated” when most people are now layering up in preference to using heating. It’s ridiculous to deem anything “out” if we are supposed to be moving to sustainable fashion. We all need to get good at adding key pieces for a refresh not binning things or retiring them for years.

HappyHappyHermit · 30/06/2022 15:40

Today I am wearing a dress with leggings, a cardi and ballet pumps. Clearly I am not in fashion, butI think it looks good on me and frankly that will do. Leggings under a dress make them wearable for me this time of year as I find it too cold to go bare legged and too warm for tights.

AWobABobBob · 30/06/2022 15:42

Wedges - very 00's.

Dresses over jeans.

Big chunky belts.

Ballet pumps - I lived in them in the 00's- 2010's.

Little Shoulder bags - although at a shopping centre recently I saw a lot of teenage girls sporting them, so fashion must be making a comeback again.

Flat caps circa 2000

The "gypsy" style skirts and shoulder tops.

A hoody with denim jacket combo

Cheap, Lycra style looking dress alla Girls Aloud

Coloured leather jackets in the 90's - purple, pink, blue.

The god awful shoes (not sure the name for them) as sported on the Verve album cover. I had them in blue, they also came in pink.

So knee length boots, high heels and ballet pumps are all out of favour? I’d better put on some flip flops then😁 I haven’t worn heels for a long time but I do like ballet pumps (and Sketchers) and I like floral dresses with leggings underneath (with pumps🙂). I also have no problem wearing cardigans but I don’t care about what’s in or out of fashion, I just don’t like anything that looks tacky and vulgar. I think the Kardashians and what they wear looks very dated/vulgar though.

sunglassesonthetable · 30/06/2022 15:45

I'm just going to take the OP question at face value. And presume if you're reading this you're interested. Like I am, in this sort of thing.

Otherwise don't take it too seriously, it doesn't really matter.

Cork wedges are very much in fashion.

TheTonEffect · 30/06/2022 15:47

Oh no, I love cardigans Confused what do people wear instead??

needanotherholidayy · 30/06/2022 15:49

5128gap · 30/06/2022 13:38

The big bum aesthetic is going? What on earth have big bummed women done with their big bums to avoid looking dated?

I was just thinking 😂 for some of us having a big arse is a natural body part, not a fashion trend

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 30/06/2022 15:52

TheTonEffect · 30/06/2022 15:47

Oh no, I love cardigans Confused what do people wear instead??

I’m still wearing cardigans when I feel the need for a cardigan. I’ve got so many shapes, lengths, colours and fabric weights. Nobody will persuade me that suddenly they’re all a huge no-no, but then I have a lot of vintage anyway. Wear what makes you happy.

outshinethemorningsun · 30/06/2022 15:53

I don’t think skinny jeans are ‘out’ I think it’s great that lots of different jeans are in fashion and acceptable, I currently have mom jeans, skinny, bootcut that all get worn I love it

whynotwhatknot · 30/06/2022 15:56

i still wear leggings dont give a crap whats so called unfashionable where what you like
