As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

What’s the alternative to ballet flats then? If heels are out what do you wear to the pub / meal

Trainers
Chunky boots
Chunky / flat sandals
Brogues

I second this! I wear them at work, with jeans, with dresses. What alternatives are there?

PatientlyWaiting21 · 30/06/2022 14:55

Leggings or tights with shorts, it was never a look but I’ve still a friend who loves it 😂

ELM8 · 30/06/2022 14:57

@georgarina I forgot about the gladiator sandals era. Glad they are gone they did nothing for my legs..

Leisurewear outside the house

You may not be into this look but I don't think you can say that leisure wear outside the house is dated. Leisure wear seems to be the main look these days.

I do a lot of exercise and often pop out for lunch / dinner / errands on my to and from various classes.

I'm really dated then 😄

Hateseaside · 30/06/2022 14:59

Side parting? What about choosing what suits you.
I would look awful with a middle parting! Same with choose eyebrow shape to suit your own face.
But I keep clothes until they wear out. Eco and cost.

velvetvixen · 30/06/2022 15:00

Periwinkle blue is a gorgeous colour Squiff70. May saunter round Peacocks.....

needanotherholidayy · 30/06/2022 10:17

Does it really matter though? Just wear whatever you're comfortable in and what you like.

This is on the Style and Beauty section. If we took your comment as the maxim, the entire section would be redundant.

AnnaFF · 30/06/2022 15:03

To replace skinny jeans I wear slim fit with big turn up, bootcut/flares.

I don't know which jeans are the most fashionable but really baggy or Mom & Boyfriend jeans do not suit me at all.

Snailsaresweet · 30/06/2022 15:03

Going back to make up, what are those of us with very few lower eyelashes left (menopause) supposed to do if eyeliner below the eyes is outdated? It's the only way to get any sort of eye definition.

bellamountain · 30/06/2022 15:04

Leggings and tunics outdated but leggings and oversized shirts are in.

Lunificent · 30/06/2022 15:05

M and S is full of older ladies in long dresses and white trainers so it won’t be on the younger people for much longer. What’s coming next?

ClaudineClare · 30/06/2022 15:06

I think true style is about being to express who you are with clothing. The most stylish person I know is a 60+ goth artist. She always looks amazing.

@IVFPrayingForBioChild I am not setting myself up as an arbiter of style, so won't be posting any pictures of myself. I did think maybe us lesser mortals could learn from you, though.

Lunificent · 30/06/2022 15:07

KentishMiss · 30/06/2022 12:38

But surely ‘style’ an individual choice, not dictated to us by a multi billion pound fashion industry. We have a right to wear our own style and to feel comfortable with what we wear. That is my opinion and I will support my fellow women in what ever they felt comfortable wearing. That is not ‘policing’ but having an opinion.

What’s left to talk about on this section of style can’t be discussed due to it being an ‘individual choice?’

velvetvixen · 30/06/2022 15:08

Snailsaresweet I wear a soft dark grey kohl pencil under my eyes. Used to wear black, so that's my concession to ageing re make up!

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2022 15:12

I think the question was what now looks dated. There is no need to add "and laughable" - it is unnecessarily snide.

Style & beauty threads can be helpful & interesting without being derogatory.

Crispynoodle · 30/06/2022 15:13

I made a thread for what's on trend now because even though I'm not giving up my cardis I would genuinely like to know:

What's on trend now? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/4580166-whats-on-trend-now

woodlandarchitect · 30/06/2022 15:13

Skinny jeans
jeans with rips
denim jackets and leather jackets
tank tops
Bleached platinum/ grey / lilac grey hair
long bobs
yellow raincoats
Fake tan / orange skin

Blueberrywitch · 30/06/2022 15:14

Knee high boots and little cardigans are definitely trending rather than dated at the moment!

FlorenceOrTheMachine · 30/06/2022 15:15

Has the bustle come back yet?

Starmoonsunlight · 30/06/2022 15:15

I'll never stop wearing skinny jeans. The only other style I'd consider would be skinny flares. Some of the looser shapes look ok on some people but most of the middle aged women round here look grim in "mom" jeans and that ilk. Plus they've become so ubiquitous they've become a cliché. Mom jeans plus some kind of Edwardian blouse seems to be "the look" du jour. Not for me.

IVFPrayingForBioChild · 30/06/2022 15:15

@ClaudineClare
Unless you're a size 8, 5 foot 4, Asian woman there's no point in me sharing my style and fashion with you.

midsomermurderess · 30/06/2022 15:16

‘Maxi dresses with white trainers and a short denim jacket’. I agree. Mind you, I thought this was looking tired last year. But then it became so ubiquitous, so uniform, so quickly.

Starmoonsunlight · 30/06/2022 15:17

I watch trinnys closet confessions and shes supposed to be on trend but I must admit to finding most of what she wears horrific, esp that half in half out tuck pyjama style thing she does.

Notonthestairs · 30/06/2022 15:18
