What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

According to my dd17 heels are for old women and hookers.

I can’t actually imagine many youngsters under the age of 30 wearing ‘heels’ so yes they do look very dated. Embarrassing even.

NaturalScone · 02/07/2022 13:38

I think people who are confident and at peace with themselves are not really fussed , and those who ask for advice and worry about things appearing dated are generally out of the loop, a little bit unsure of themselves, perhaps, or unhappy in other areas of their lives.
Having this one element of control can make them feel more assured, less afraid of standing out and looking like a 'fraud'.

It's all anxiety at the end of the day, and this forum is heaving with that (alas, the human condition). I strongly doubt that outside of this middle aged/somewhat lost element of society anyone cares about what is dated or not.

It sounds like a whole lot of negative energy and fear for so very little, to me!
Just wear whatever you like, if it available, just chill out and go with the flow, life is too short and i am certain we a re due another apocolypse soon Grin!

Squiff70 · 02/07/2022 13:40

So there's hope for me and my periwinkle granny cardi yet then? Yay!

I'm sitting here thinking. What I truly haven't seen on the high street for absolutely ages is boleros/shrugs - those cropped cardigans with short or long sleeves. With certain outfits like a dress worn to a Spring/Summer wedding, I can see how one could be very useful to cover shoulders and finish off an outfit nicely. I bought a very pretty one, long sleeved in cream, sort of crocheted wool with a coiple of pretty buttons, to wear with a dress for my grandma's funeral 11 years ago. I only ever wore it once and recently sold it on Vinted. I'm not even joking when I say it sold as soon as I put it on. I listed it at £8 and it was snapped up within minutes. I was gutted because I realised things like that are very hard to find now (it had cost me a lot more too) and I could probably have sold it ten times over at a much higher price without any difficulty.

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 13:40

Most people I know wear trainers, pumps, sandals in the day time or wedges if dressing up - kitten heels or very low heel if attending something formal. I haven’t seen anyone in high heels 👠 since well before the pandemic and it would look very dated here almost 1980s style

What a horrible attitude. Into which category does she think Meghan Markle fits?.

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 13:44

The very epitome of desperate/not cool
is the woman hobbling along in heels and tight dress - and the look they convey. Worse still if they are three sheets to the wind. So I can see why it’s dropped out of fashion and may neve r return. The women of today do not see any need to put themselves through that - and for what? It’s the very opposite of confident and self assured.

You haven't seen anyone wearing platforms? They're everywhere.

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 13:47

Meghan? Are you joking? I am assuming your post is tongue in cheek.
Meghan is old and passè - and she most definitely is in the fashion sense - now in her 40s and wearing old dresses abd heels. Not a look to aspire at all for young girls and women.

AmbushedByCake1 · 02/07/2022 13:47

Provenceinthesummer it's a shame that your DD has such misogynistic attitudes.

No - no platforms here unless for fancy dress (central London currently)

The thing is I think teenagers actually like their parents to act and look dated, one finger typing, book phone cases, cardis or whatever it is.

They are immortal remember and are nothing like us, they are not going to fuck anything up, and might actually save the world Grin
so they need that difference between us. It’s comforting

I agree with this, and also, despite what @TheLassWiADelicateAir thinks teasing and banter within a family including whereby the teenager can tease about 'dad jeans' etc is a sign of a healthy, happy family . It would be worrying indeed if a child / young person did not feel comfortable in their relationship with their parents .

outshinethemorningsun · 02/07/2022 13:51

Love Island is currently on and all the girls wear heels when they get dressed up. There are definitely still loads of heels in New Look and similar places, I just think the style of shoe is a bit different- slightly shorter height, blockier heels, slip-on and sandal heels rather than 10 years ago when it was really tall stilettos and platform heels everywhere on a night out.

Lily073 · 02/07/2022 13:52

Central London has many women wearing platforms. They may not be in your social circle but they are certainly in mine.

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 13:52

Dd is the last word on equal rights and doesn’t see why her male friends can run around comfortably looking great and yet women ( not her generation.) are confined to horrendously painful, damaging footwear to ‘look good’
look good for what? Who says it looks good?
it doesn’t look good at all
confident young women don’t need bondage on their feet to feel and look fantastic - hallelujah for that!

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 13:55

I am at the savoy at the moment for lunch - we arrived mad night, no heels anywhere to be seen. If I saw someone dressed in high heels I would assume they were a sex worker - sorry but it’s true.

Stylish women don’t wear them anymore.
love island is hardly what most of us aspire to!

Provenceinthesummer · 02/07/2022 13:57

queenofarles · 02/07/2022 13:57

According to my dd17 yes at that age teens are very knowledgeable in all things related to Fashion Hmm.

faffadoodledo · 02/07/2022 14:02

Do those that are mentioning platforms actually mean flatforms? There are plenty of those around this summer. I'm wearing some to DD's graduation later this month. Very comfy. V walkable.

A sly and thinly veiled insult which is intended to put me in my place and make you look morally superior. It has done quite the opposite and has simply highlighted your ignorance.

No, actual platforms. As a buyer mentioned earlier, they may not have filtered down to the high street - check out Net, Matches, Browns etc.

queenofarles · 02/07/2022 14:10

Someone should have had a word with Jacinda prior to her meeting at n10 that heels makes her look old and passé and are for sex workers Hmm

Or Nicola Sturgeon- never seen without high heels. I don't like Sturgeon but she has her own style and it suits her.

Same for Angela Merkel.

Lily073 · 02/07/2022 14:27

@queenofarles
@TheLassWiADelicateAir

Both of those are confident and powerful women with their own sense of style. They don't rely on the opinions of others to validate their choices.
