As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

The whole thread is negative. E.g the snarky comments about "spotting out of towners" As for being rude about other people's choices- the whole thread is doing that. All these posters confidentally telling other people what they are wearing is "dated" or a "no no"

You aren't the thread police

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 11:12

But it seems @TheLassWiADelicateAir that you are.

iCouldSleepForAYear · 02/07/2022 11:14

I don't mind the spirit of this thread or the one asking what is fashionable now. But I've loved a good fashion mag since I was 12. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Vogue is a bit too fancy for me, but I used to enjoy my Grazia or American Seventeen back in the day.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 11:15

YOU have been INCREDIBLY rude about other peoples choices.

see jeans
see heavy soled shoes

You didn't hold back

So don't come on here speaking as if you CARE about peoples feelings!

What you don't like is DIFFERENT choices to yours.

And fancy people speaking 'confidently' without consulting you first?!!!

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 11:16

@TheLassWiADelicateAir Obvs last post was for you.

You're the one telling me not to post- which you've done at least twice. I've not done that to anyone.

well done

Scraping hair back into a bun or ponytail, which I am very guilty of doing

What's wrong with that one? Almost everyone eryone I know , all ages, with shoulder length hair or longer does that . It's just another way of wearing long hair. What should they be doing?

PearlClutch · 02/07/2022 11:31

Well, what is this thread about? People looking for signs and signals of risky behaviour that will threaten their status within a group? People trying to exercise their authority?

(I mean, I've no idea, I'm sat here in buggered old running shoes and jeans that I have no idea the name of the shape but I'm fairly sure it's wrong as I got them for £2 in a very unfashionable local charity shop. I don't even know how I got onto this board, clearly there's been a terrible mistake.)

ThatshallotBaby · 02/07/2022 11:39

The thing is I think teenagers actually like their parents to act and look dated, one finger typing, book phone cases, cardis or whatever it is.

They are immortal remember and are nothing like us, they are not going to fuck anything up, and might actually save the world Grin
so they need that difference between us. It’s comforting

There's nothing 'wrong' with any of it. Nothing wrong with any of the dated clothing people have mentioned.

Its a thread about fashion and what is currently on the way out.
That is all.
In reality people wear whatever they like and that's fine.

This thread is fascinating to many of us here who don't actually care about being seen in the latest trends - especially the cardi clinging brigade! please stay! it's awesome.

Delatron · 02/07/2022 11:59

I don’t think cardigans are out. Just longline ones, or thin ones. A cropped/boxy shape is fine.

For summer evenings I’ve bought a thin, quilted cotton style jacket - floral. Sounds awful but quite handy. But it is tricky. Also have a think cord jacket.

ballroompink · 02/07/2022 12:01

Knee length, patterned, possibly slightly 'flippy' summer skirts that were ubiquitous in e.g. White Stuff, Boden, etc. a 10-15 years ago. Often in colourways that combined brown with brights like green, pink, turqoise etc. Worn with leggings and boots when it got colder. Ebay etc. are full of them now.

Maireas · 02/07/2022 12:20

ubiquitous! Drink! 😂

BellePeppa · 02/07/2022 12:34

I think this thread is lighthearted and fun, it’s up to individuals if they want to take offence but that’s on them, not the thread.

I use a book style phone case and wouldn't have anything else. If anyone thinks that’s out of date they should see my ancient iPhone!😁

I have no idea what’s in fashion as there doesn’t seem to be any obvious looks I see in town. I only take an interest in what I’m wearing when I’m on holiday in a hot country, then my style becomes much more colourful (I usually wear dark colours).

eglantine7 · 02/07/2022 12:35

Oh dear! Why are people being so touchy?? 😳

I remember in my eqrly 20s my German friend laughing at me for wearing kitten heels when visiting her and wobbling around on nights out on cobble streets while she and her friends were in comfy adidas. I took it on the chin and laughed at my silliness too and we all had fun regardless.

I think coming into London people forget it's a big huge gritty city and that is all and there was no need to get dressed up. I know some clubs expect that but in London the dress code is more relaxed. I didn't mean to be sparky at all. It's just naivety and with age we learn to value comfort.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 12:39

Yes. Hard to out run that need for comfort! 😁

Craftycorvid · 02/07/2022 12:41

I’m on my travels today and have been observing what folk of all ages are wearing and I can honestly say I could play a version of Bingo with everything that could be considered dated. I’ve seen towering heels on a young ‘un, a 70s-style dress on another. I’ve seen numerous varieties of trainer, leggings galore and one lady rocking head to toe black pleather (wouldn’t be my idea of fun but each to their own). And cardigans....lots of ‘em!

EspeciallyDeIighted · 02/07/2022 12:58

I thought it was a lighthearted thread too, I’m not particularly stylish but do find the subject interesting and like people-watching when I’m out and about. Sometimes I notice that things which were everywhere at one point are rarely seen now, so they are dated in the sense that they are associated with earlier times but it’s not a judgement on anyone who still wears them. I wear cardis, leggings with long tops, all sorts that probably look dated to others but I’m not feeling offended by this thread.

villagelife77 · 02/07/2022 13:12

All of the comments about heels 🤦🏻‍♀️ Heels will never look dated!

Batmannequin · 02/07/2022 13:17

Skinny jeans though, really? My entire wardrobe is dated then 😂

MrsRinaDecker · 02/07/2022 13:27

I think London and the southeast does tend to have a more casual / relaxed vibe, compared to northern cities where getting glammed up, big hair, high heels, heavy makeup, etc, is still de rigeur for a night out. So yes, I think you might be able to spot a tourist that way. It’s kind of like the episode of SATC where Carrie can spot the non New Yorker by her scrunchy!
I think re “scraped back hair” (as per the past poster) the whole very tight, smooth pony tail / bun, which was on trend when I was at high school in the 90’s (and I sported well into the 00’s Blush) does look dated compared to looser “messier” up dos.
None of the above as a judgment, just my observation.

queenofarles · 02/07/2022 13:32

All of the comments about heels 🤦🏻‍♀️ Heels will never look dated! true and I’m quite surprised people say heels ,
but there are some styles that do look quite dated, JLo’s taste in footwear hasn’t evolved past 2010, it’s all platforms with Perspex base, or very high wedge espadrilles , she always looks very dated.

Nothappyatwork · 02/07/2022 13:35

It’s the whole wobbling along with your arse in the air like a cat on heat look that you get with high heels that’s just completely out of fashion now.

very few people could actually walk in them most just look like that shat themselves
