As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Never mind the phone case, my teens inform me I 'text like an old person' by which they mean I use one finger instead of my thumbs. So even if I had a trendy case, I would be letting the side down with my texting style...

I think the moral of this story is be confident, do what suits you, and works for you and that includes clothing, keep an eye on anything hideously dated (like I say, a perm and set isn't in any more) but other than that, I don't think you are committing a fashion crime by wearing jeans, t-shirt, even a waterfall cardi wouldn't make me gasp but I'm not in a mega fashion world. Most people aren't terribly fashionable, which is just fine.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 08:58

@dudsville do you think it's impossible to have an objective discussion of fashion trends then? ie take the OP at face value?

Juced · 02/07/2022 08:59

Lol I listed a lot however, I wouldn’t judge anybody for wearing anything mentioned,my mum loves leggings over tunics and I love her so I love what she wears. I think I’ve just noticed things dropping of the radar but theirs nothing more fashionable than being ourselves 🥰

eglantine7 · 02/07/2022 08:59

Young people do take the piss, par for the course!
There was an American something going around on tik tok that talked about dated "cheugy" fashion. Skinny jeans are very much out.
My nearly 12 year old does take the piss out of is, but borrows clothes she approves of. Especially oversized jackets & Shackets and hoodies and T shirts and she's tiny.
Urban Outfitters is dreadful in my eyes and like a parody but my daughter likes it. I remember it in the late 90, early 2000s , the one Kensington High Street had interesting brands and beautiful designs and I only shopped at sale time as a poor student and the sales were incredible.

OU is a mass produced shell of its former self, but the kids like it. Mmmm Juicy Coutore 😱

Yes! But it also extends to how I hold the remote.

Queenie24 · 02/07/2022 09:03

I love those boots where are they from please

FarFarFarAndAway · 02/07/2022 09:07

@sunglassesonthetable lol, I'm not even going to try to change! I think the point is by 50 odd, you must have an idea of your body, what looks good, what works, whether you care, and so avoiding any absolute clangers, clothing should be about what you like to wear. I would wear a structured jacket with jeans one evening and enjoy it, I might wear a sweatshirt another night. No-one has fainted yet when I've entered a restaurant. There are so many choices now that I don't think that many things are crazily dated in the way that they were in the past (apart from the crinolines haha).

Totally.

I love talking about trends and how they catch on but I just don't think it's possible on-line unfortunately. Whenever anyone tries, it starts to trend (excuse unintentional pun) and it all kicks off.

hatchyu · 02/07/2022 09:18

I agree

Craftycorvid · 02/07/2022 09:18

This is such an interesting thread! Personally, as an 80s kid, what I loved about that era was how there were lots of style tribes and people just went with what they liked. One day you might go full pirate and the next a victorian milkmaid. It was FUN. I was too poor to buy new things and haunted jumble sales and charity shops, and got creative! Half the time I must have looked ridiculous. Who cares? These days, it’s eBay and my tastes range from a bit of Toast to a hippy-ish velvet dress from a label that is no longer in business. People do comment on my clothes and I’m sure a few think ‘wtf is she wearing?!’ Others like the fact I look a bit different. In my area there are quite a few vintage shops and I get my denim there - much better for the environment and the styles have come back round anyway. I find Urban Outfitters a strange place full of knock-off copies of previous decades. (And expensive).

Oh and I’m typing this with one finger!

LaFloristaCalista · 02/07/2022 09:39

Skinny jeans are still in every shop, as well as wide leg, straight, mom jeans etc. I am glad we are moving to an era when everything can be found in shops, although there's clearly things that look more trendy.

For me, the bits I'm not wearing anymore because they feel dated are:

  1. scarves that don't bring warmth
  2. Fired over the knee office dresses
  3. Stiletto heels
  4. Huge handbags
  5. Leggings

But I'm in my 50s and I've always loved fashion, so I'm sure some of those things will come back. In the meantime, I might or might not wear them, depending on my mood

velvetvixen · 02/07/2022 09:52

But of course fashion changes! Or we'd all be still walking around with fob watches.

Fob wearing was a hipster thing, so had a brief fashion again!

In Central London you can always spot the out of towners with their high uncomfortable heels and tight uncomfortable clothes. Very made up hair and faces.
Having said that plenty of Londoners have no taste either!
Someone mentioned furry slides, I have no idea why anyone would wear those!

Do you think this is because some people feel they are doing the right thing by dressing up to go to London? Otherwise I find this strange as not sure where else people are actually wearing the right clothes and high heels for their every day lives. Country villages ? Market towns ? More down at heel working towns? Suburbs ? I can't see why this would be .

shinynewapple22 · 02/07/2022 10:44

tight clothes, not right clothes

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 02/07/2022 10:46

Huge handbags

Oh that's an interesting one. There have been several threads recently where posters were debating whether to buy Louis Vuitton "never full" bags or similar large, very expensive tote bags. I assume the posters willing to spend thousands on a bag didn't think they were dated.

SkeletonFight · 02/07/2022 10:49

Yes me too with the texting ! 😂

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 10:49

Probably not.

But currently not seeing loads of those huge wag handbags like you used to. Seems to be lots of people wearing the smaller cross body bags.

PearlClutch · 02/07/2022 10:52

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 08:53

I thought this was a lighthearted thread……

I think it's impossible tbh.

People get very agitated and upset. It's right through this thread.

Fashion is a kind of signalling identification with a group, I suppose, and to feel oneself cast out is a kind of social death; very frightening for an animal that depends on the group approval for survival. We're social animals.

But our groups are now shifting more and more often, subject to more and more information/disruption/change, and signals are manipulated by profit-makers.

Snoredoeurve · 02/07/2022 10:53

Things evolve
The current smaller or no bag trend came about because of smart phones.
I dont even have a purse anymore just a card holder and so many people use applepay or similar.
Im a huge fan of pockets in womens clothing

It's fucking ridiculous that phone cases and watches are mentioned on a thread about fashion trends.

They're not fashion statements, they're just... things. Useful things. Anyone judging you for using them is a twat whose views on everything can safely be ignored.

Completely agree on those 2. And some of the other pronouncements ( ballet flats, high heels , cardigans)

I'm really not sure what the point of this thread is. If posters want to just say what things they personally really don't like/ don't get the point of then be honest and say so- rather than trying to pretend it's an objective statement because these things are "so dated"

@Christinatheastonishing

BUT

we were on holiday with friends just before Covid, my OH got out his book style phone case and my friend's DS roared with laughter and fell about. And called it a "DAd Case"
😁😁😁😁

And yes the DSwas 15 🤷‍♀️
But it's undeniably a THING
And it's pointless getting annoyed because there are fashions in all things.

And no, my OH didn't change the case, he likes it.

( Also the DS didn't judge my OH, he loves my OH, he judged the phone case. )

thinly only point I take from that anecdote is the child in question is rude and ignorant , and I couldn't care less about his opinion. And I'd be glad he wasn't mine.

The idea that a certain type of phone case can be in or out of style is in itself not worth giving head space to; caring about is even worse.

Oh please get off your high horse and jog on . You have consistently expressed your opinion that this thread is weird, you don't see the point and been very rude about other peoples choices. Great .

But you're still here!dripping negativity. 💁‍♀️

None of this refers to you. Personally. Unless you make it so.

If you want to start another thread eg " why the word 'dated' shouldn't be used" or
"posters shouldn't discuss fashion trends "
or " I can't handle other people having a different opinion to mine regarding clothing"
Please go and do it.

iCouldSleepForAYear · 02/07/2022 11:09

Knee high horseback-riding-style boots, unless you actually own horses.

(Tbh, I miss them, but my legs admittedly look a lot less stumpy (am 5'9" but a 16-18) with the right ankle boots.)

Stiletto heels on boots and sandals. I'm sure they'll be back, but for now, the chunky heel seems to be it.

Strappy body-con dresses.

Stud earrings and big hoop earrings (so, pretty much all my collection 😝). Teen wears the chunky small-hooped earrings my middle-aged teachers used to wear in the mid-90s.

I would argue that fleece does not look as dated as it used to, and is having a revival with the younger crowd. Had a nosey on Depop not long ago for a secondhand Patagonia fleece, for practical hiking-related reasons and an attempt at sustainable fashion. All listings had high prices for secondhand, all modelled by cute young girls about 4 sizes too small for the piece advertised.

Scraping hair back into a bun or ponytail, which I am very guilty of doing.

Straightening naturally curly hair, which I also did today, but I'm too lazy and prone to scalp issues to CG Method properly.

The pointy acrylic nails already seem to have had their day.

Yep all things do go in and out of style inc phone cases . Historical fact.

Agree. You absolutely don't need to care . As for ALL fashion.
( Though you 100 % seem to care VERY much indeed )

Do you know many 15 year olds? 😂 We love this one very much.
