What now looks dated

As in looks you've worn in recent years that now look wrong or frumpy? (no Mumsnet debate on the word frumpy please!)

Crinolines. Thank God! So impractical and everyone staring because of taking up three seats on the tube.

They're really dangerous as well on an electric scooter as you run the risk of becoming airborne!

Tattoos

Absolutely not.

The tattoo industry has exploded over the last 5-10 years. The amount of incredibly talented artists is so high right now. A lot of people now see themselves as tattoo collectors and get some incredible works done; it’s no longer about getting a dolphin tribal tramp stamp for cred.

It’s absolutely fine to not like tattoos/not want any on your own body, but tattoos in general are absolutely not dated. Some styles may look dated now (like everyone’s typical idea of a “tramp stamp”), but there are so many new ways to tattoo nowadays that are really fresh and quite revolutionary, like fine line micro tattoos. Heavy black work is also really finding a fan base, too.

Every tattoo collector has their own preference (for me it’s black and grey neotrad), just the same as clothing, but I’ll always appreciate well executed artwork, even if it’s not a style I’d personally have on my own skin.

I was in London recently so spent a lot of time on the tube, people watching. What was noticeable to me is that virtually everyone was wearing trainers - very few women wore heels or even sandals. And women of all ages were wearing the same type of clothes - sumner dresses and trainers mostly, or shortish loose trousers! There's little demarcation now between the different age groups. With the exception of crop tops!
I did see one woman wearing ballet flats, who I did think looked very stylish. She was wearing loose cropped trousers and a light loose blazer. She was also young and thin which are the things that make the difference between looking fashionable and looking frumpy. Because, the clothes were pretty universal.
The one woman I saw who had very obvious fillers in her face did look very dated.
DD dragged me to Urban Outfitters and it looked like they'd brought back all the really tasteless shit from the 90s and added zeros to the price. H&M was full of baggy jeans and crop tops and plastic rings it was horrible but she still spent loads of my money in there.

I have such a love/hate relationship with UO.

I love it because I always have this natural draw towards “ugly” clothing. I like having pieces in my wardrobe that aren’t minimal, neutral and safe. I genuinely believe there is nearly always a way to take an item that is conventionally ugly and style it in a way that makes it look great, and I really like that element of challenge.

I do also hate it, though. It goes through periods where everything is just hideous. It is expensive for what the pieces are (I don’t mind usually because I buy one or two things, not full outfits from there), but sometimes their pricing is just taking the piss. I also don’t like their XXS, XS, S, M, L sizing. I prefer stores to have numeric sizing as when the bands are, say, a M is 10-12 and a L is 14-16, and you’re a 12-14, as an example, it’s impossible to know what size to buy. So you either have to go in store and try on (a faff), or order two online which is just annoying as you then have the faff of returning at least one item and waiting for the refund to come through.

It was a lot better a few years ago, though. I couldn’t get enough of it circa 2016-2017.

britinnyc · 02/07/2022 01:05

All do this also depends where you live, I’m in California now so unless you are on Selling Sunset heels and skirts have looked dated for a while, it’s all about athletic wear here abs people dressed up in the day look very out of place. The look here is nice joggers, a slightly cropped vest, Birkenstocks and a baseball cap. The lashes/lip filler look seems to still be going strong with the teens/20 somethings but for the people my age (40s) it’s all about the Gwyneth Paltrow look, subtle Botox, natural makeup, slightly messy hair. The older women with all the overdone fillers all look the same to the point you aren’t sure if you see someone you know or someone who just looks similar so I’m glad that look is not as popular anymore!

Airfriedpotatowitch · 02/07/2022 01:43

What is dated is the attitude of people judging that something is dated. Who cares where what you want its probably in fashion somewhere or going to come back in fashion sometime soon you are just ahead of your time setting trends and if not so what anyway

PrincessAnnaOfArundale · 02/07/2022 06:05

I live in Australia and fashion tends to be a little behind so I still think that dresses over leggings with ballet pumps looks fine, still a popular look here especially with it being winter.

I totally agree with the high heels of any kind looking dated now. I’ve never really liked heels or been able to comfortably wear them so I’m glad to see they’ve been shunned since covid.

Cardigans have always been a little ‘frumpy’ in my opinion but they seem to have totally out of style in recent years.

Shiny glossed lips. Which is a shame cos I liked the nude coloured shimmery look of a few years ago but no lip gloss or very matt lips seem in fashion now.... maybe mask wearing has influenced that. Guess no one wanted sticky lip gloss on their masks.

Oh dear. This thread, to me, should be titled "things you like wearing and comprise 90% of your wardrobe"!

This!

Darlingx · 02/07/2022 06:43

I am waiting for the drop sleeve to move on. I wanted a sleeve that fits to my actual shoulder. My sweatshirts, Hoodies, Jackets are falling to bits now and I can’t find replacements without polyester or a dropped sleeve. Manufactures loving the flat pack clothing as its cheaper to produce so probably here to stay.
I sold off all my sludge colour investment pieces as felt I needed a refresh away from the grey uniform but now my more mainstream wardrobe is turning on me. I just didn’t have the funds to buy the investment pieces or got sucked in by micro trends more likely ? Too many WI dresses with cardigans .
My area is full of women wearing Grannies curtains I feel like its the Handmaids tale or at least Stepford wives clones turf here.
If I am internally laughing at myself forgive me I used to want to go jogging with a cigar and a can of lager just to change things up because I kept bumping into myself.
I remember being another blonde with a rolled up Yoga mat in West London it was like pac man on a grid. I also remember reading your more likely to be sexually assaulted then meet the man of your dreams stats wise in West London at that time 🤬
I think it’s tailoring that I am missing. I want some decent fitting clothing that isn’t stretch shape wear but that is expensive so I am stuck in no mans land clothing wise.
Don’t get me started on the waterfall cardigan I have waterfall leather jackets which I might convert into bomber jackets.
Shoes take up a lot of space and are hard to sell on but I have made in Italy leather its all injection mold made in China which explains the footwear trends. Whatever is the cheapest to produce becomes on trend

britinnyc · 02/07/2022 06:51

When people are taking about dress over leggings do you mean that the leggings stick out of the bottom of the dress? Just a question because that is not a look I ever see, maybe because the weather where I live is warm enough for bare legs year round. I remember the shirt skirts over cropped leggings trend of the early 2000s but that’s it.

I've always used a phone case that opens like a book... Just personal preference, I had no idea it was apparently a "trend" that is now out. I'm not changing for anyone! #datedandproud

It's fucking ridiculous that phone cases and watches are mentioned on a thread about fashion trends.

They're not fashion statements, they're just... things. Useful things. Anyone judging you for using them is a twat whose views on everything can safely be ignored.

RampantIvy · 02/07/2022 07:13

I totally agree with you @Christinatheastonishing.

Lovinglife45 · 02/07/2022 08:02

Christina and baffled bunny
When out with my cousin, she ushered me to put it back into my bag. I am in my 40's and not trying to look hip - I am not a contestant for Love Island, The Only Way is Essex or Made in Chelsea.
Apparently my phone case is old fashioned and what those in their 50's/60's/70's use. I had never given a second thought to how my case (which opens like a book) looks. I am generally on trend with most things but do not give a shiny shit about my mobile case.

WitchWithoutChips · 02/07/2022 08:04

Blossomtoes · 01/07/2022 08:32

I completely disagree. Why do shoes need to be “supportive”? Healthy feet don’t need support, they have an infrastructure of muscles and bones that works perfectly. For anyone else who likes them, M&S are doing a perfect knock off of the Chloe ones.

“Healthy feet” aren’t designed to walk on concrete whilst clawing the toes to stop pumps with a low vamp slipping off.

I thought this was a lighthearted thread……

There is always an undercurrent of nastiness to these threads; other people's clothing choices being described as "laughable" etc.

Re: the phone case issue. Which phone cases are in? I am mystified that I might be judged for my phone case.

@Christinatheastonishing

BUT

we were on holiday with friends just before Covid, my OH got out his book style phone case and my friend's DS roared with laughter and fell about. And called it a "DAd Case"
😁😁😁😁

And yes the DSwas 15 🤷‍♀️
But it's undeniably a THING
And it's pointless getting annoyed because there are fashions in all things.

And no, my OH didn't change the case, he likes it.

( Also the DS didn't judge my OH, he loves my OH, he judged the phone case. )

Squiff70 · 02/07/2022 08:28

My phone case opens like a book too. If I take my phone out it's very slim, slippy and a PITA to hold. Give me a chunky case any day. I like to know my screen is protected when I chuck it in my bag with my house keys!

onlythreenow · 02/07/2022 08:35

My phone is also slim and very slippy, and I'm not letting it rattle around in my bag (wait - should we even have a bag?) either so I use a phone case - and I couldn't care less what a teenager might think! The day I take style tips from a teen you might as well lock me up.

I wear a watch as I can't be bothered looking for my phone every time I need to know what the time is - far easier to look at my wrist.

I agree that anyone judging someone for having either of those things is a twat.

Knee high boots?

Of course no one’s wearing knee high boots, it’s July and 21 degrees.

Come the winter you’ll all be wearing them again. I know I will, I’ve only just found Fairfax & Favor this year and I bloody love them.

I was a footwear buyer for a boot company. Sales from 2010-2019 dropped by over 70%. I haven't worn any of my frebie pairs for at least 3 years. I do think they're becoming hard to style as shapes of trousers and dresses change.

DashboardConfessional · 02/07/2022 08:39

*freebie

Benjispruce4 · 02/07/2022 08:40

Yes so loved knee high boots in the 1995-2005 era. Now I just don’t know what to wear them with.

Benjispruce4 · 02/07/2022 08:13

I thought this was a lighthearted thread……

You think this is bad, have you seen the spin-offs? 😮

It never ends well when a thread from here starts trending. I bet everyone a tenner there'll be a thread on AIBU this weekend about how horrible S&B is.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 08:46

Of course those phone cases are practical!!
Of course they're useful and a good idea!!!

But of course fashion changes! Or we'd all be still walking around with fob watches.

Why on earth are you getting so riled up and calling people a twat?

And believe me, 15 year olds will be judging us for a lot more than phone cases. Because that is what they do.

Chill out and own your choices.

@onlythreenow

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 08:53

I thought this was a lighthearted thread……

I think it's impossible tbh.

People get very agitated and upset. It's right through this thread.

dudsville · 02/07/2022 08:56

800 comments mostly aimed at being critical of others choices. That's a terrible flaw of character. I appreciate those that went against that "trend" on this thread about trends. Art, creativity, design are all very interesting, inspiring, motivating... unlike being critical of others choices, which just closes things down.
